Game Club #2 Voting!
Added 2020-05-05 20:23:44 +0000 UTCWelcome back to the 'Club
It's Game Club Number 2! April we all played StarTropics and it was a ton of fun to go back to that game, for me personally, but is was also great to see people's first-time reactions! We all struggled through Chapter 3 but I think we all learned a lot from the experience. But it's May, and it's time for a new game for the club!
We're still testing things out. We're still focusing on the 8-bit and 16-bit era and games that are more on the shorter side. Last time we did StarTropics and I think it went great, but that game is still a bit of a commitment. We discussed in the discord about switching things up, we've decided on three action games that are very short, but worth replaying and have other related games worth checking out.
Metal Slug - The NeoGeo's classic shooter! This game has been ported available on just about everything, and still available on multiple digital stores. Since there's so many ports and sequels, you'd be encouraged to pick any one you want, grab any game with "Metal Slug" in the title and go! This would be more of an appreciation for the series than just one game.
GunStar Heroes - The other run-n-gun classic that's not Contra (which is fitting because it's from ex-Konami devs). One of the best Mega Drive / Genesis games and one of the greatest action games of all time! There's multiple difficulties that change levels and bosses pretty significantly, and a Game Gear port and GBA sequel for further playing.
Journey to Silius - SunSoft NES masterpiece. Legendary soundtracks and classic brutal NES difficulty. However, it's only 5 levels and with Switch online, there's rewind and save states. There's also the PS1 Japanese-only port that I've never played. This would give me the excuse to finally go that. Or play SunSofts other NES action games!
These games are all still currently available on places like Steam or Switch. Of course emulation is totally fine, but we want to make sure you have the option to go legit.
Voting goes until Friday 12 Noon PT, just before the Game Club Live Stream at 3 PM PT, so get your votes in!
Thanks,
Uncle Derek

2020-05-12 19:56:52 +0000 UTCHoo boy there's a lot to talk about with Metal Slug, even if you only talk about the first one. Try counting the sheer number of tiny visual flourishes in this game while you're playing; it's impossible! I've played through the original trilogy so many times, yet I still find new destructible objects in the environments, or unique new tricks in the animation. Great series, looking forward to possibly talking about it more with all yall!

2020-05-06 18:55:02 +0000 UTCI voted Metal Slug because you guys don't talk about SNK games that often. Also, I bought a PS4 port of the game and haven't finished it yet because it runs so poorly.

2020-05-06 16:10:17 +0000 UTCMy vote goes to Gunstar Heroes due to its inclusion on the Sega Genesis Mini.
2020-05-06 09:25:19 +0000 UTCOh man, I loved Gunstar Heroes! In fact Red & Blue has been a long time fantasy character of mine for Smash Bros. I like to imagine they would play like Ice climbers but with ranged blaster focused abilities.
2020-05-06 05:50:54 +0000 UTCWhile I want to play Journey to Silius since it's somehow a new one to me, I gotta vote Gunstar Heroes. That is just a blast of a game and well worth checking out... Treasure is well known for making awesome games and Gunstar Heroes is no exception. :D

2020-05-05 23:19:28 +0000 UTCVoted Silius because I wanna hear what Uncle Derek has to say about it, rather than what awkward baby brother Derek had to say.

2020-05-05 22:03:51 +0000 UTCI've got the Wii Metal Slug collection where you can bind "throw grenade" to waggle. So legit the best version.
2020-05-05 21:42:05 +0000 UTCYes! Journey To Silius!
