What would you like to see in 2016?
Added 2015-12-07 20:57:51 +0000 UTCWe know 2015 isn't over just yet, but Grace and I are already thinking about the future. We had a very challenging year, 2015 was all about the basic stuff, starting this patreon, establishing the Stop Skeletons From Fighting brand, developing the new look of the show, and developing production rhythm while still pumping out new material. (And on a personal level, it was also the year we moved to a new city and dealt with all the stress that comes with that.)
But now all that junk behind us and the future is bright! We want to make 2016 even better with new projects, new types of shows outside of the standard review-format. Grace and I have been kicking around a few ideas but we of course want to take it to the people.
We're not asking which games you'd like us to cover, what would you like to see more of in 2016?
New shows?
Old shows?
Longer reviews?
Documentaries?
Shorter videos?
Less retro stuff?
More retro stuff?

More NES reviews! A few suggestions: The Goonies II, Maniac Mansion, Metroid, and, of course, Zanac. Keep up the great work.
Zanac, the Best NES Shooter
2015-12-18 20:02:22 +0000 UTCThe PS1 era of Square RPGs is really fascinating to me, I'm not sure if the scope of the show would cover them, but I'd really love to see some stuff on Front Mission, Vagrant Story, etc.!!!!

2015-12-16 18:53:15 +0000 UTCi've wanted to remake/revisit a handful of my early videos for a really long time, probably longer than i've publicly mentioned. but i don't see that happening in 2016, not until i feel the SSFF brand is stronger.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 01:12:01 +0000 UTCIs It Really That Bad? will return
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 01:07:34 +0000 UTCthe HVGN is finished but there is unfinished business with the DVDs. a 3rd (and now final) DVD was always in the cards but was never able to focus on it. 2016 will finally see the gears start moving on that project.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 01:06:48 +0000 UTCi never think too much about the length of a video, so long as the topics are good and the video has a nice flow, they're as long as i think they should be. monster party and shatterhand were longer than cave noire and contra shattered soldier but i said all that i felt was really worth talking about in each one. but that being said, the dino crisis video was a big hit, so i think people like series retrospectives, so expect a few of those in 2016
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 01:03:16 +0000 UTCi have an idea i'm really excited about which is basically "get a load of THIS game!!", less a review show and more a showcase for weird or neat games or parts of games
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:58:57 +0000 UTCman, a lot of people want me to cover undertale. it's so incredibly popular though! i'll reconsider it or incorporate it into the earthbound doc or something
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:58:01 +0000 UTCthanks! more re:cert's are on the docket!
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:55:18 +0000 UTC"weight to their punch", don't think i'm not on to you! we have some ideas for short-form videos in 2016 but they wont exactly be standard review format. they'll be more fun, ;)
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:54:55 +0000 UTCno plans for a podcast revival. that was unfortunately an experiment that just didn't work in the workflow. we plan to stay the course with reviews, but don't be surprised to see a video or two that's just historically focused
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:50:38 +0000 UTChey Patricia! IIRTB? will definitely be coming back and the final Earthbound video is slatted for 2016.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:42:56 +0000 UTCthe long-term goal of these videos is to graduate to actual documentary filmmaking or television. the fact that people seem to like these little videos give me confidence!
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:36:44 +0000 UTCit's so flattering, there's so much data out there that says "no body watches videos over 5 minutes" but my audience has always been down for longer stuff! for both earthbound videos, the first feed back i received was "make it longer! you didn't talk about X, Y, and Z!". but we need short-form videos to fill the gap between the series retrospectives and documentaries, and i think we've got some fun stuff in the works
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:30:38 +0000 UTCthanks for the feed back. i regret not having time to cover dino stalker and dino crisis 3 in that video. it was poor time management, we were working on dc and re4 at the same time and were not at the place where we could pull that much in one month. and i've definitely seen that the parasite eve, earthbound, gargoyle's quest video continue to be the most popular hvgn videos this year. the people want dem series spanners! so for sure expect a few in 2016 (they ARE a lot of work so don't expect too many). i really enjoy streams but for a time there they were all i really had time for. i understand why people thought that was my main focus, it's why i opened a separate youtube channel just for the livestreams. but for the record, i've already covered D, it was my second halloween video WAY back in 2008.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:27:15 +0000 UTCthe '15 halloween re:cert was between re4 and silent hill 2, i flipped a coin and it came up re4. so expect sh2 re:cert in 2016! plus i've had plans for a mario 64 vs banjo kazooie video for years. but a "Black Sheep Edition" of Is It Really That Bad? is a great idea! i plan on brining back IIRTB?
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:19:26 +0000 UTCi've been sitting on killer 7 for years, the gamecube version because i heard that's the better version. killer 7 was part of the capcom 5 and that's a planned video for 2016 so look forward to that!
Stop Skeletons From Fighting
2015-12-14 00:10:32 +0000 UTCi've been planning a giant earthbound video for years. been tossing ideas into a word doc basically since I finished the earthbound reedit. it would be a massive undertaking, approaching an actual feature length documentary. the "game quickie" name cannot return, RWtv (politely) asked me to stop using it since i'm no longer affiliated with them (same goes for "retro beats" but there are no plans to bring that show back). really, i stopped doing quickies because i wanted to focus on full reviews. we have some ideas for short-form videos in 2016 but they wont exactly be standard review format. they'll be more fun, ;)

2015-12-12 00:27:30 +0000 UTCAside from K7, I'd love to see more REcertified classic. I think that's a really great concept, and it's my favorite thing you do besides typical reviews. I would love to see you cover Super Mario 64, Silent Hill 2, and Sonic Adventure 2 in that show. I also think it would be cool if you looked at the black sheep of popular franchises while asking the question "Is it really as bad as people say, or is it actually good and no one will see that?" You could talk about games like Zelda 2, Starfox Adventures, DMC Devil May Cry, etc. But whatever you do, keep up the good work - I feel like I know more about not only videogames but also art in general every time I watch one of your videos. As long as you're putting out new content, I'll be watching it.
Nathan Grover
2015-12-10 14:51:34 +0000 UTCPersonally, the one game I've always wanted to see you review is Killer 7. It's a very different kind of game, and I personally feel you're the expert on reviewing those kinds of games. I have both the GameCube and the PS2 versions, I would be VERY willing to loan them to you so you can review them.
Nathan Grover
2015-12-10 14:47:18 +0000 UTCThings have been great! You have consistently been putting out exceptional content that covers subjects of interest. I particularly enjoyed your franchise-spanning Parasite Eve and Dino Crisis episodes (the Dino Crisis one left me VERY hungry to see you cover the rest of the series). Moving forward I'd love to see you cover some of the games from your live content- Saturn games, Clock Tower 2, D, Deception, etc. I don't love livestreams and prefer the more scripted, curated, edited approach of your normal episodes.
etc etc
2015-12-09 02:24:23 +0000 UTCKeep doing what you've been doing. There are sooo many retro games out there, I'd say stick with that. Documentaries are always worth while. Since we all enjoy your videos, giving us longer (more of what we like) videos couldn't hurt :)

2015-12-08 15:39:29 +0000 UTCTo be blunt : Your a great teacher! And that's what I like about your reviews! Outside of teaching, your an upbeat and "happy" guy! I would love to see you teach us about entire series, events in gaming or history, heck ANYTHING in gaming, really!
Matthieu Loose
2015-12-08 15:07:52 +0000 UTCWhat you've been doing has been great. I would love documentaries similar to your Earthbound review, a comeback to Is It Really That Bad?, some new content, a mixture between looking at overlooked new and old games, and possibly looking at overlooked indie titles.
Old School Lane
2015-12-08 01:48:28 +0000 UTCI'd love to see a return of the SSFF podcast. Other than that I think you've found the sweet spot with the reviews at the moment. I agree that the documentary angle with the social commentary is great.
2015-12-07 23:33:22 +0000 UTCI think your biggest strength is your documentary style, regardless if it's in the form of ReCertified Classic or a Retro Review. I also agree that the more obscure games seem to have a bit more weight in their punch, just because I feel as if it introduces me to something broader. I would have never known about Sweet Home, for example. Though I would really like to see a return of "Is it really that bad?" in some form. And maybe it's just me, but I would also like to see the "game quickie" kind of return in maybe a different fashion, maybe not so much a review, but just you briefly talking about the cool aspects of a game that doesn't normally warrant a full video.
Desdemona M.
2015-12-07 22:53:24 +0000 UTCOh, 'Is It Really That Bad" returning would be rad, be it live or produced.
Anders O.H Moberg
2015-12-07 22:08:40 +0000 UTCDefinitely more Recertified classics. Other than that keep doing what you're doing!

2015-12-07 22:08:13 +0000 UTCHVGN / Stop Skeletons have (almost) been about covering subjects where if it wasn't about a lesser known game, it was taking a role in the conversation about it that wasn't common. I feel like trying to nail down what type of game I want covered isn't going to help, because it's always been perspectives not talked about often. So you do you, retro OR new. I guess it'd be satisfying for me if older games covered via HVGN could be revisited, as in, a produced update on opinions said back then. You've talked about revisiting games, but I guess I oughta mention it. Here's an quick idea: "Yo You Like This Famous Game How Bout You Check Out These Lesser Known Titles Like It"
Anders O.H Moberg
2015-12-07 22:07:31 +0000 UTCI'm satisfied with the way you guys make videos. But I would be pretty cool to see you cover a game that is "So bad it's good" at one point. I love dumb games, and I know that Derek also likes them.
SephirothSword57
2015-12-07 21:51:06 +0000 UTCPersonally, I think the roughly 15 minute format that you've been doing for your reviews has been perfect, so in terms of the length of the reviews, I wouldn't change a thing. And maybe it would be cool to talk about more newer games that are retro-style like you did for Hotline Miami. I know there are a lot of people reviewing these newer retro-style games (like Undertale), but I honestly feel that with your established knowledge of retro games, you could really bring a little something new to the table by talking a lot about these newer games' roots and inspirations. That's just a thought. I'm more than satisfied with your retro game reviews.
Jonny Martin
2015-12-07 21:47:19 +0000 UTCI still feel like there are tons of Retro games to cover and I love the videos but I find them to be a little too short.
2015-12-07 21:08:28 +0000 UTCI love when you recertify classics. Love more retro reviews than newer ones. Whenever you get around to it though, it would be great for you to put out the last of The Happy Nerd episodes on dvd to complete the set. Obviously you're busy right now but we need closure.
