The CatsuCast: Episode 6

Hey everyone!

Welcome back to the CatsuCast! It's me, your dashing anchorperson, Catsudon, and this episode we'll be talking about the creation of Tempuma! If you haven't met him yet, check out last week's episode!

So lets give a little bit of back story on Tempuma. His story connects with Yakitora's story in some way. I wanted him to be a sort of rival to Yakitora. While Yaki is brash and a little reckless, Tempuma should be more mature and tactful.

Presenting...

The first idea that came to mind was, of course, someone who looked older and mature. This was the first sketch of Tempuma, and I played around with this idea for a bit. Maybe he'd be non-confrontational, able to talk Yakitora out of his anger.

Next was trying to up his sex appeal. Based off his initial look, he'd kind of have this calm, but slick look. Like an underwear model I guess haha!

Eventually I came to the realization that this "rivalry" felt too one-sided. Tempuma looked snobby and stuck up! I wanted viewers to root for both characters, but at this point, it seemed to heavily favor Yakitora as the underdog.

I had to tone him down a bit.

So maybe he'd look like a cheery fellow! He seems happy-go-lucky and carefree all the time, but maybe it's a facade for something deeper... hmmm...

Here you can see me play around with his facial features and hairstyle. I wanted him to feel just as unique as Yakitora and Leon Pan's design. Eventually I settled for frilly hair with different colors on the underside.

For his color scheme, I used this technique where I took a picture, ran it through the mosaic filter in Photoshop, which "generated" a color palette for me to use! I altered the colors a little with a gradient map and brightened it more on the final picture.

Which eventually resulted in what you saw last episode!

The final product may vary a little from this image, but this is essentially what he'll look like!
