THE OTHERS (2001) *REACTION* FIRST TIME WATCHING!

πŸ–€ THE OTHERS is a film that saturates you in haunted imagery and tricks you while hiding deep in the darkest shadows of your mind. A first-time watch for Wes and a return to the story that terrified and shaped the mind of Chey at just 9 years old, this gothic tale of ghosts and grief unfolds like a whispered confession... quiet, patient, and devastating once the truth steps into the light. Nicole Kidman mothers so hard in this one, so obey and click play... πŸ‘» πŸ•―οΈ πŸ‘οΈ

This was so fun to watch again with you two! Chey had me cracking up with his side eye here and there dying to say something πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I agree, I'm really loving all the deeper meanings and metaphors of this movie. I suppose that the darkness represents her denial. She is literally keeping her family "in the dark" about the fact that they are dead. When the "intruders" rip down the curtains, they are forcing the truth (the light) into the house. At the end the kids find out that the sunlight doesn't hurt them anymore. The lie is over. The fog seems to be the boundary of their prison. It physically traps them on the property. It cuts them off from the rest of the living world so they can't see that life goes without them. Grace also seems to be obsessed with silence. I guess that the real reason is because the dead are supposed to be quiet.

What an interesting movie. The husband was such an intriguing presence, and I'm still trying to fully decipher him. If I understood correctly, the husband died on the front lines in France in WW1. Did he come back to say goodbye? Maybe he needed closure. Maybe he was summoned by Grace's grief, so he found his way through the fog to see his family one last time. He's carrying with him the heavy weight of the war, and probably still trapped in his own loop of suffering (he mentions that he has to go back to the front). He's stuck in whatever hell war put him in. Charles realizes the truth way before Grace does. He senses that something is deeply wrong. He is distant because he is horrified and heartbroken, and realizes he can't stay in her delusion. He knows he is dead, and suspects they are too. That's why he's so cold. He is mourning them while looking right at them. Amazing reaction, amazing movie.

Before this movie came out, I was in a play in high school that included a similar ending. I know it’s a bleak discovery, but it makes me laugh when the interpreter during the seance reads everything in deadpan voice. β€œMUMMY!” β€œ.Mummy…”

Can I just say that I LOVE the captions for each video?! The captions are always SO FITTING to the content, always emotionally appropriate, always heartfelt and somehow humorous and always just a little tongue in cheek! It really showcases the intellect on this channel! Ugh, I love you both, SO MUCH!

well her husband being gone is the reason she was so lonely and isolated so we definitely think it was the main catalyst for why she did what she did. not the only reason but the primary one that set off a catastrophic chain of events

I don't think she did what she did because she missed her husband. I think the loneliness and constant darkness and isolation made her go insane.

I love how Chey is just being deathly silent. Like "I can't say anything...I can't say anything..."

AmenΓ‘bar is such an amazing director. The "My name is Anne and I'm walking" is a reference to his first movie Tesis (It's the first time I've noticed it). It's been so long since I've watched this movie, it definitely is fascinating to rewatch. Thanks as always for the great content ^^

a ssdgm fan! love to see it. i'm excited to see you react to this. such a good ghosty gothic period movie. also, Nicole is so amazing in this. And Wes is totally right. She can be quite frightening. A versatile queen.

"xeroderma pigmentosum" This movie inspired me to use the condition the children have as my science presentation when I was in school. The DVD has a whole feature about a child with this condition.

Tanesha

Oh! This movie is amazing. Watching that ending in the theater we all went wild.
