This is one of my fav eps! I think there are a lot of themes here. It’s a big change of pace. I remember when it aired, a lot of people being mad that it was “filler” because they were so starved for plot and lore. The creators were always pretty in tune with the fans via twitter, so this ep could almost be considered meta commentary on like… taking it slow, or things don’t always have to have a point or connect to some big plot line… There’s also a theme of just like mid life crisis, trying a bunch of things to solve a problem that you can’t even define, you’re just trying a bunch of things. And the of course this whole ep could have just been like “look, this is how people used to receive serialized entertainment from home.” A nice educational reminder of how “TV” and episodic storytelling started. Lastly, every season of AT has a vibe. This show ran for a long time, changed “what it was” a lot. Writers and animators came and went and the purpose of the show was always shifting and warping. I remember one of the writers saying “eventually the show just became a vessel for poetry” and that always stuck with me. I love that, and that’s my fav aspect of this show, looking back. :)
