Summer Segment of "Turning"

I thought I would share with you a section of my short film for each season as we come upon it. This is the Summer segment!
When I made this film, I was very focused on the textures and sounds of nature. I wanted to capture the energy of the season; of creating symbolic performative actions that gave a sense of caretaking and nurturing; of being inspired by and honoring nature through creating, also with the humble creation that nothing I can create will capture the true majesty of nature itself - and how, also, all creations are fleeting and succumb to the cycle, the grand design that's bigger than us all.
This was a film I made with Fred Hatt, which had an unofficial screening at MoMA - it was so cool to see it on the big screen!!! It also was on a 24/7 loop in a window of a gallery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan throughout the whole lockdown of the pandemic.

“Turning” is a meditative collection of artistic actions performed for film, tuning into the essence of each season in the same landscape (Rosekill Farm, Rosendale NY) through the textures and sounds of nature and the relationship of the artist to the land. The performer becomes a part of the cycles and changes of the landscape through symbolic caretaking, illustrating an isolation in self reflection, with nature as a mirror to the inner self. The actions are soft but powerful, celebrating femininity, and capturing the magical connection of spirit to nature.
