I’m really glad that Tendou decided to get into sports. He does need a healthy outlet.

Again, more praise for Tsukki since he has had his moment where he is now hooked on volleyball and we can clearly see how dedicated he is to his strategy and plays. He's a thinker lol And when he gets pulled out for his injury his mind is racing about the game, how fast can he come back in, what is his next move. His mindset has done a 180 and still can't help to masque his feelings lol

2023-06-07 00:12:50 +0000 UTCI've seen a lot of people not like Tendou and Ushiwaka just because they might come off as mean, so it was super nice to see you understand their characters. Their friendship is actually one of my favorites out of the whole show, since their unusual personalities compliment each other so well.

2023-06-07 00:05:38 +0000 UTCAs a fellow lefty, it still bothers me how many people in older generations want to "fix" left-handedness. The fact that Ushijima's differences make him that much stronger is an interesting contrast to the themes from the next two episodes. Two language nerd notes: 1) The title. First, I think I've said this before, but whenever a title is written in hiragana only (or in katakana when it's not a foreign word), something narratively important is going down, haha. It probably means that they're using the word for multiple different meanings (like this episode, or Fullmetal Alchemist's Ep58, "Hitobashira" / "Sacrifices"), or in an unusual way (like Haikyuu 2x15 "Asobiba", a "place to play;" FMA's Ep28, "Otousama," / "Father"), or in a way where the true meaning is meant to become clear only later (Demon Slayer's 1x19 "Hinokami"). It's almost always a deliberate choice, because you could write 'hitobashira' as 人柱 or 'hinokami' as 日の神, but that's too literal and direct, so instead it's just ひとばしら and ヒノカミ. This episode title in this case is "Kodawari" (こだわり, not 拘り). The verb, "kodawaru" means to be selective about something because of your own high standards. We'll say that great chefs have a "kodawari" about the specific ingredients they choose or the technique they use; great artists might have a "kodawari" about their work so that they only show a small portion of the work they produce that they're comfortable putting out there. In sports the word also often is used for superstitions, like how Rafael Nadal always bounces the ball an absurd number of times before he serves and has his whole routine that he "sticks to." So, basically "kodawari" is sticking to something because you won't settle for any less; the opposite case, "kodawari-nuku" (to remove kodawari) is one way to say "to compromise." I think that the concept of "kodawari" applies in very different ways, as you said, to at least four people this episode: Suga, Tsukki, Ushijima, and Tendo. (kinda Asahi in the background, as well) 2) At 18:37, they had Shimada saying that the ball touched the line a little, but that's not what he meant or what happened. The ball was indeed out, but it touched *Tsukishima's hand* a little on the way down, and that's why it's Shiratorizawa's point. It's just tough to translate because all you say in Japanese is "because the ball touched a little," so they had to fill in the gaps and picked the wrong thing.
