2023-02-11 19:56:39 +0000 UTCTo built upon the point of chess/shogi players remembering games: I think it comes down to pattern recognition. To us the pieces are just kind of placed random but the players they represent a "game state" that makes sense. Kind of like how remembering a code made up of 100 random letters would be close to impossible but remembering a 100 letter sentence is easy. I watched an interesting video where they actually tested this with elite chess players and it turns out that if you just place pieces on the board randomly they are not actually any better at remembering them then the average person. But if you set up a specific board they will be like "ah yes this is the semifinal of 86" without blinking an eye.
