anne felt elated knowing that her sin is nothing compared to the guys who steal and kill with no remorse

Woah woah woah

Gonna have to watch that when I'm sure it will be spoiler free

Later on I was thinking that my comments on Anne being pure missed something essential. As you said, her action and Askeladd's decision are on totally different scales, but I think on another level there's a direct parallel being drawn between her and Askeladd. And it might have something to do with both of them being driven to discard a normal code of conduct in favor of some deeper personal ambition. One thought that occurred to me along those lines is that Askeladd might be missing some kind of calling higher than himself and what is "earthly" perhaps represented by his idea that Valhalla is coming and so it's all sort of pointless

Alex G

Nicely said. I think the way my attitudes have drastically changed about religion is that in the past I was over fixated on the elements that made no sense to me, and so I felt comfortable dispensing with the whole thing. But the fact that a particular form of something doesn't get everything right or has flaws doesn't mean that there isn't some truth or beauty behind it. In fact, you would expect common representations of really grand things to be overly simplified, since the complexity and scope is almost impossible to grasp or teach. What's so cool about this episode is that heaven and hell and good and evil exist in the narrations of the father, but are also playing out in real time, and to me it feels like they're intrinsically linked even if nobody in the show is getting all of it at once

Anne approached a tree and met the Devil of All Earth

Aaron Ong

Yes the literal translation is heart beating but she specifically compares it to the thrill of stealing the ring. So I think elated fits fine

Mortis

I love that this episode comes right after Askeladd's episode that almost put him in the light of being a hero, but what a quick crash back down to reality

Jon

For me the elated Anne scene was because she realized there were people in the world so unfathomable evil who didn't fear God's punishment. So maybe there is no punishment to fear.

The last part of the video / discussion kind of reminded me of some of the things talked about within veganism and Jung's concept of the shadow, among other things within philosophy! It's always really interesting hearing your thoughts on different topics, and I feel like different shows are perfect for intruducing and exploring them further!

Also, that “a baby? That’s rough” line from Askeladd was super reminiscent of Zeke’s classic “So....it’s a shame” line towards Colt and Falco

Jake White

@1:55 I believe she was more so referring to the burden of unease and existential dread that comes along with fearing that a righteous figure is watching and judging every mistake you make.

Jake White

i wish i could remember what i initially thought of this episode :/

Brimmy

this may be a hot take but i think this Askeladd fella may not be the best person

The author of AoT is a fan of Vinland Saga and recently took part in a joint interview with the Vinland Saga author.

From what I understand she felt elated, because compared to Askellad and his men doing her sins seems insignificant that’s why she was relieved by knowing there are other people in the world who committed far greater sins than stealing a ring

Wael Al Magthawi

this is 100% personal: 1st op = an iconic song of the whole series 2nd op = a song I have added to my playlist for listening to every day while driving

Saku

I don't think "elated" was a good translation. What she was basically saying is that her heart was racing or thumping.

This episode is a good example of seeing vs hearing, to grasp the actual gravity of a situation. We know Askeladd and his men are ruthless and have seen them massacre soldiers but only heard or caught glimpses of them pillaging villages. And so when we see this episode, and the gruesome details and actions are depicted for us to actually witness, you're reminded of how horrible they actually are, and just what a devil Askeladd is. He's definitely a great character, but you can't deny he's a ruthless and horrendous person, and so is Thorfinn for blinding following him and his orders without a thought of his own. And the timing of the episode is also so strangely perfect, as just when you're starting to like Askeladd you're reminded of the kind of man he is. Also, this is just my personal interpretation on the Anne scene and her feeling elated. She probably felt elated and relieved knowing there are more people like her who do "wrong"(though her action and theirs is not comparable in the slightest) without a care in the world. What the religious beliefs, her family and environment taught her probably alienated her after she had the urge to steal and do " wrong". So she probably feels elated knowing there are more people like her so she's not lonely? It's probably a mix of that, reality not settling in, and a hint of the "darkness" peeking from within her soul? But again I could be way off mark.

Yes! Some appreciation for the second opening! The first one is amazing in its own way, it's pure emotion and rage and really fits into where we see Thorfinn fall to. But the second opening is confidence and badassery and pure self-assurance. Imo the second opening is for the true MC of the season, Askeladd. It's a necessary tonal shift. Also, the song is catchy as hell.

Musicisum

When it comes to the religious aspects of this episode I feel there is a duality presented in how the audience views it. The episode presents this Christian family in a way that to most modern viewers would seem strict, unhealthy, and toxic. That's why modern Christian religion has evolved over time. But there is also this pure innocence to it. Whether it's overall beneficial or not, this religion, or list of rules has kept these people out of the forest. These kids are being taught on a basic level what kindness and respect are towards others. It would still be outdated by our modern view but it's Definitely a step in a beneficial direction and has given these people a tool too step towards a world without violence or just in general, a better world. This tool is no where near perfect but it does push these people out of the forest, which is in stark contrast to the vikings that we are following in the story. I really enjoy this episode as I feel it showcases this well and still has great impact on what's gonna happen in the story going forward.

Cornhorn

Ah yes the "reminder that Askeladd is a horrible person" episode

Amit

This is a bit unrelated to the episode, but I have always thought the lyrics of the first ending are like Thors talking to Thorfinn.
