“Another day in the crew of the man who killed my father. Childhood memories,” “In 1002 A.D., bathtime was ruined for everyone. They never bathed again,” “Do you even know who the real enemy is? It’s birds,” “And just like that, we’re, in a very weird way, aligned with this terrible crew of mercenaries. Against the true enemy: the English,” “This heroic journey is starting off in a very interesting way,” “Anime running: 10/10,” “That just crosses a line. Everything else he did before, that was ok, but the dogs. Unacceptable,” “The universal language of peace: food on an empty stomach,” “That is an advanced case of fleas,” “Really rigorous investigation, there, horse-man,” “His Japanese-English is not great,” “At that point, who are you? Are you Thor’s son, or are you Askeladd’s assassin?” (that one HIT)

The ending of this episode hurt me deeply when I first saw it

Nick

I was thinking exactly the same. This is already the best reaction to this show imo and it will only get better. I'm super excited!!

So I actually did watch, but ultimately decided to scrap the reaction. Great movie! In hindsight what I should have done is cut it down to certain parts only instead of it being a reaction to the whole movie

Alex G

Yes! It should be up sometime this week

Alex G

I was hoping to have finished it for today but looks like it's gonna be sometime in the coming week instead

Alex G

I cannot wait until philosophy becomes the center focus of this show. I’m genuinely excited to hear your takes on the characters own opinions of “how the world should work”. Obviously philosophy is still very tightly woven into this show already, but wow. You are in for a treat my friend. Amazing job as usual.

Goob

Oh yeah, you mentioned something about watching Everything Everywhere All at Once didn’t you, when would you plan to watch it? Or maybe I’m tripping and you didn’t say that, if so, I apologize.

Chris Sharpe

Side topic! The new My Hero Movie is out on Bluray worldwide now! Do you have plans to react to it anytime soon? :D

Skyler Anderson

On a totally unrelated note and sorry if it’s bothersome at this point lol: are you still planning on watching the MHA movie soon, Goodwin?

Jake White

i'm sorta ahead in the manga "All he's thinking about is- complete Askelad's tasks i.e kill people = a duel with him. " but this explains a lot

Brimmy

I love how he went from this tiny precious smol bean to this angry little man...+/- whose emotions are all locked down tight because this is his life now

Brimmy

Funny that’s kind of how WIT also rearranged the AoT flashbacks to be at the beginning instead. They did a great job filling in the episodes it seems.

keyton bush

"Just the prologue." Heh. Very astute observation of Askeladd, btw.

lrmc32

not sure if u knew and it's not super relevant knowledge but episodes 5 and 6 are actually original to the anime as the manga never shows Thorfinn's early growth. Episode 7 onwards is actually where chapter 1 of the manga begins and the flashback arc with thors death was a few chapters after

AryTheDog

I don’t even think he’s misinterpreting his father’s values, but rejecting them. If I recall correctly, he was confused and upset that his father said a true warrior doesn’t need a sword. If he’s going to learn, he’ll learn through experience that his father was right.

keyton bush

Finally caught up with these episodes (haven’t seen anything past this one). I swear, Thorfinn is like if Eren and Guts had a baby. It’s strange how he interprets his father’s values. He hasn’t truly grasped why Thors’ ideology is good or worth following, he’s just parroting what he saw from his parent in his last moments by fighting Askeladd to a duel while also killing people for a living. What’s more, he’s killing people specifically so he can kill Askeladd “honorably”. It’s going to take some time for him to ponder and internalize his father’s values.

Chris Sharpe

Ohhhh I'm assuming because of constantly hearing the Englishmen they attack say that? I never stopped to think about it. That's such a cruel detail!!

Bighead

A neat detail that gets overlooked with the language shenanigans is that the little English Thorfinn knows is phrases like "Run away."

Marcus Bae

This John-boy doesn’t seem as friendly as our Jean-boy

keyton bush

This episode really highlights how blinded Thorfinn is by revenge that it probably doesn't even register to him that he's actually killing people, taking their lives away like how his father's was taken away. All he's thinking about is- complete Askelad's tasks i.e kill people = a duel with him. And this episode is also like a final ode to his family ties, showing you how sometimes even love is not enough to quench your thirst for revenge.
