This show has been so explicit and brutal about the reality of that era. As someone who loves studying history, especially Vikings, this has been a delight so far. The depiction of the Jomsviking was specifically impressive. Really loved the helmet design and how trained they were.

“Just Saturday bath time with the bros,”/“...but bath time,” “This is why you can’t trust animals,” (*adds fish to the list of animals Goodwin can’t stand*) “Okay, Mikasa,” “Oh, it’s a booze run. Respect,” “A certain blond character. Well, they’re all blond, but-,”/ “Even his eyes are blond,” “He’s such a glorious man, I can barely even comprehend,” “Imagine being a unit so strong you don’t have to pay taxes,” “While we’re making comparisons, he’s also the Tanjiro of his village, doing everything, tying people’s shoes for them, et cetera. ‘Thors, can you do my laundry?’,” “I knew Floki was an oaf,”

You dare attack my multi-comment way of life?!? Lmao but nah really, only reason I leave new comments instead of just editing 1 is cause the app is finicky and won’t let me edit my comments sometimes.

Dude, been absent for a bit, but love your deep introspections and analysis so much, and you attract the best commenters. Y'all are great, and I'm here for all the historical facts and the moral analysis that everyone is posting about, without any spoilers. Best reactor with the best community, hands down.

Man this season is so good, I also just finished the arc that’s going to be next season and I’d argue that one’s even better albeit for completely different reasons. There’s something so fascinating about setting such a strongly anti violence story in the middle of arguably one of the most violent times in all of history

Rice

That slaughter at the beginning of the episode is a real historic event now known as the St. Brice’s Day Massacre where the English king of the time ordered all Danes in England be slaughtered, and is just one of many real pieces of history this show delves into and uses as a basis for and set piece of its story (don't google any character name s you might see history that is a spoiler)

And I might be wrong about this but Vikings don't exactly enjoy or take pride in killing people but rather in fighting and dying on the battlefield and going to Valhalla. The more I think about it, it's somehow more digestible even when still kinda the same and soo wrong😅

The first time I watched Vinland Saga I was pretty ignorant of Vikings, their beliefs, mentality and just the history of war. It was rather jarring when I saw this episode, seeing the people rejoice war. It took me a good five to six episodes to really understand that fighting in war was almost a rite of passage and honor for many. And as this story progresses and we get to meet really great characters, it was comical for me to juggle between loving them and being morally perplexed by their actions and beliefs and that's probably what's so great about this series. A lot of these characters and this story operates on a slightly(or on second thought, a vastly) different moral compass than ours. And even now, we as humans have different moral compasses(that's constantly evolving) that we adhere to. This is something I subconsciously was aware of, but it really came to the forefront while watching this show.

Rewatching is making me realize how good these first few episodes really were. The set up for Thorfinn’s character is just insane

Hell, even shortly before that era, in 1861 hundreds-thousands of people actually brought their families out to have picnics and watch the first battles of the civil war because they assumed it would be entertaining like a firework show lol. Needless to say, lots of lost lunches on those days unfortunately lol

Thorfinn taking the status his father has, hearing him be called brave and respected, seeing an army of elite warriors cross the sea just to bring his father back to war. He's seeing the bravery as a one sided trait, and associating it with power and might. Lashes out at the kids around him, and then quickly grows to desire a real weapon capable of killing I think Thors intervened, as you said, at the perfect time. Life is wild like that, sometimes people say just the right thing at the right time and those moments will always stick in your mind I've had a few moments in my life where people said the EXACT perfect thing at the most odd time in my life. Unprompted, but that partly makes it stick out even more. Even if I don't believe what they say or realize it at first, those words prove to be very valuable

(btw this comment is totally referring to larger nations of people throughout history and not any communal or indigenous tribes that never held these views) It’s also just fair to remember that the whole “war is always noble and there’s nothing that could be more honorable than dying on the battlefield” psychology was the norm and popular mentality for most cultures throughout history up until the 20th century. It wasn’t until nations and agencies with the ability to communicate information internationally on a fast and grand scale were established, that news of WW1/its effects was able to be spread around the world and general populations were finally made privy to the true nature of suffering and anguish that is war. And then by the 60s-70s when conflicts like Vietnam were being broadcast directly into people’s homes on TV, that whole mentality had almost completely disappeared from most societies.

Jake White

I like the fact that all of the people in Thors' village had ancestors who fled to live there, just like Thors fled the battlefield Fleeing/deserting is mistaken for cowardice, but I think Thors is living his best life here. Their village is sort of away from the chaos of the world such as war as it is. In a way, you could almost say their home in Iceland is one step closer to being like "Vinland" and is a result of people choosing to leave the conflict not choosing to try and thrive in it

My favorite scene in this episode is definitely the scene of the kids playing war with their toy weapons. It's simple in the clear parallel of reality and the kids innocence, but there is some much to unpack from it. For me it really shows how humans naturally put things in boxes to feel secure. We can't experience everything there is to experience which leads us with a gap in our understanding of the world. So we pretend to understand things we haven't experienced to feel secure. Our default is to feel like our understanding of the world is full even if that may be an impossible task. In the real world an underlying aspect of what compels so many people (myself included), to digest media is to in some way gain experience and understanding of things we haven't been through or have a full understanding of. The many examples of this in episode 2 are simple in a lot of ways, I feel it becomes a big part of the story and was presented in this episode incredibly well. I have not seen the anime but I have read the manga, and this episode was a great second episode and I can't wait to see the next one

Man, “something about being choked out underwater while I already couldn’t breathe anyways...just the spite in that...” is probably one of my favorite Goodwin quotes in a while tbh lol

Jake White

I'm trying to remember what the other guy called him. Was it oaf?

Alex G

Floki is not the guy that was with Thors at the beginning of episode one. I’ll just say that, but they did mention him when Thors and the other guy were talking

Jabez Katsak

OH! Wasn’t expecting this, I thought it was MHA ova night lol. Awesome

Jake White

wow lookit me being early for once o.o Edit: cuz why would i make another comment that's silly. I love how Thors is like \do u desire a sword? why they are made for killing\ cut to....what the 2000's? maybe later somewhere between 2000 and 2022 people have collected swords because they just look cool, its amazing bro i'm....new outro? lmao that's fantastic XD like i was saying i'm excited for the next couple of eps o.o
