Edit: Well.... it is addressed in the first 5 minutes of episode 5, so this comment is a little redundant :D A little late, but since nobody else pointed it out, I feel like I should. Loid is not doing this for career or money. He is unknown to the world except for his code name. The operation he is doing is supposed to prevent a war, so he has tens of thousands of lives riding on his shoulders. His past trauma (flashback from episode 1 of him crying as a kid in the middle of a warzone) makes him even more driven to do this. It would not be strange for him to endure this onslaught of disgusting behavior in the interview... it is a miracle that he reacted to it and even went so far as to leave the interview. It goes against everything he has spent his life working for.

Wow, that handwriting thing is interesting and would NOT work for me. If ever I was to have thoughts about moving to Japan, that might be a non-starter. I like to think I'm a somewhat competent guy, but my handwriting is AWFUL. Looks like a child's writing.

Ahh nice I love Star Trek. I have watched all the series and films. I grew up watching the Original Series and the Next Generation so those are my favorite series. But yes DS9 is super fun and interesting. I would be awesome to watch all kinds of media on Patreon.

Great comment! Enjoying to hear your experience in korea and china

This isn't related to Spy x Family, but has anyone ever recommended a Star Trek show for the channel??? I've gotten really into Deep Space Nine recently and even though it's a bit dated by now, it's a fantastic show full of things to talk about

I love you comparing this battle between Loid and the elegant headmaster to Death Note because one of the things people say about Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is that its the "Death Note" of RomCom's. I would be inclined to agree, its very much a psychological battle anime but with comedy. Can't wait for Kaguya...and more Spy Family of course.

Another time that anime has lined up with my life! I had an interview this morning for obtaining my substitute teaching credential and like everyone, I got nervous lol But luckily I had one of my classmates text me the questions so I could practice my answers. However, in the end, as I was speaking to my interviewer I felt like the only option is being myself, because who wouldn't want to hire me?? I know my strengths are being kind and bubbly and the only way to let that show is if I am genuine with my answers. Interviews are definitely scary, but I think confidence in yourself and who you are as a professional should override that fear (although I'm still in the process of practicing it x) )

Athena

I was thinking the same! I mean him and Yor look identical lol

Athena

The lyrics are pretty cool, too. I assume you've read them, but just in case: https://www.animesonglyrics.com/spy-x-family/mix-nuts

Also, one of things you said at the end kind of resonated with me. When you tell someone off when you hate confrontation, even if you didn’t go about it perfectly, it feels like it needed to happen.

Chris Sharpe

Poor guy. Glad you saw past that. He'll be grateful for the opportunity. :)

"Why am I so excited for school?” “This school has what, snipers? Judgy snipers,” “This is Death Note chips. ‘I take a chip and eat it’, et cetera,” “Looking like Gentle Criminal over here, with an eyepiece,” “Her handwriting-very similar to mine. Is she left handed?” “I’m here for this elegance exam. What does it mean to be truly elegant?” “He literally released Noah’s Ark,” “And they have formations. This is football now,” “That is so great. Thank you Loid for being the man. Having a heart,” “He just gets better and better looking too, more and more dapper,” “Being kindred spirits: killing people,” “He’s getting defensive over-oh nonononono. But you have real feelings. You fool. You handsome, lovable fool,” “Maybe we can just blow up his car later,” “Also, she’s like four, right?” (YES, gosh I love her little lying self to be the best daughter she can be) “Yeah, SUCK IT, jerk,” “BLOW. UP. HIS. CAR. With him in, maybe,” “You’ve traded something of yourself for a material reward that will fade,” “YES. Thank you Loid,” (My dad was clapping and pumping his fist when we all watched Loid shut Murdoch Swan down lol) “You don’t want pushovers either. You don’t want cowards. You want people who are valuable. And valuable people don’t do that. They don’t put up with that crap. Valuable people know their own value. And can walk away,” “Look at these high-class saucers,”

Geneva The Weeba

Trust me, the quality is consistent.

Its funny that you mention interviews and how just low the bar can be. I've been doing interviews to backfill my current position as I am moving to a higher tier one this month and the amount of interviews I've had that were just disastors was astounding. Its a technical position and I just do technical interviewing for it, but there were candidates who I could have ended the interview 2 questions in because it was so evident they just didnt have the knowledge needed. The one person I actually approved to move forward with the managerial/teamfit interview thought he did so poorly that he apologized for "wasting my time" at the end of the interview. Sure, he was lacking in some minor aspects but the fundementals were strong and he was clearly just a bit out of practice with some concepts. Sometimes people just can't see the things they displayed that were worthwhile and focus so hard on their shortcomings.

Derek

There was a manga line for the past episode where Yor’s line for her parenting style is literally “strike first, strike hard, no mercy”.

Chris Sharpe

Also (my turn to comment a lot Geneva, haha), the guy in the credits with the red eyes... that has to be Yuri, right?

Ryan

Thank you for the laughs and wisdom as always. 😊 “Do you know we use saucers when we drink tea?” I also love the story of the taxicab driver. 100% on your side there.

Ryan

Language nerd comments: 1) I have no idea what anyone in this show means by “elegance.” I do like that they say it in “English” to make it ambiguous to the Japanese audience, too. 2) The way Anya tries, mostly unsuccessfully, to speak “adult” Japanese is pretty cute. She adds -masu (a polite verb ending) in places where it does not belong, or in ways it doesn’t fit, haha. Like ‘daijoubu-masu,’ which is rough, but something like “it all-rights,” or “hankachi ageru-masu” (maybe something like “I do will give you my handkerchief”). I applaud the choice of the subtitles to go with inappropriate “please.” That's basically the same idea, haha. It’s like when people try to use “whom” to sound fancy, but then use it in places that the truly … elegant?... wouldn’t. 3) Obviously, the whole interview process is mostly parody, but judging candidates by their handwriting is absolutely a thing in “upper-crust” Japan. Most résumés today, in 2022, still are written by-hand on custom forms for each company because HR looks at the handwriting and judges personality traits and compatibility with the company mission based on that. Even dating websites and apps will ask for samples. It’s a shock to the uninitiated. 4) Interesting that it says Walter Evans teaches “English.” In the Japanese, it says ‘kokugo,’ 国語, which means “language of the country.” In Japan, that’s what they call Japanese classes, so I guess… English-speaking Westalis, confirmed? Haha.

So, this was my first time encountering a Henderson in anime form, and he turned from potential humorous antagonist into awesome by the end. I was already enjoying this anime, but this episode put this show on a trajectory to become one of my favorites. One of the most impactful moments for me is when Yor leaps to her feet when Anya starts crying. I don't know why that mundane action impresses me so much, but after all the previous gags and comedic reaction shots we suddenly get something resembling real life. A mother rushing to comfort her hurting child. Then we get Loid acting as if he's putting the mission before everything else, only to have a "Boku no Hero" moment where his body begins to move before he could think, which is followed by him willfully failing his mission for Anya's sake. What was a pretty funny, slapstick episode gave me emotional whiplash in how effectively it switched gears.

Bullnettle

ok, I'm commenting a lot, ik, ik, BUT the line in the manga when Loid's talking about Anya was LITERALLY "She's so intuitive that at times I'd swear she was reading my mind!" LOID. my man. my guy. sir.

Geneva The Weeba

SCREW MURDOCH SWAN ALL MY HOMIES HATE MURDOCH SWAN

Geneva The Weeba

Test: Solve if you understand how to read the clock. What time will it be two hours after the current time? Anya: TIME

Geneva The Weeba

That is excellent

Alex G

And Henry Henderson, our esteemed master of elegance, shares a VA with none other than Kenny the Ripper from Aot. I love it.

Geneva The Weeba

Lol oh yeah I guess we're 2 out of 2 for excellent school interview type scenes

Alex G

The interview of this episode is equivalent to the parent-teacher conference in Fruits Basket. I’m always impressed when an anime can have me on the edge of my seat for something seemingly mundane.

Megan

Henry Henderson (old gentle criminal lol) was one of the hardest 180 “AHA! You thought you were gonna hate this guy right? WRONG!” character flips I’ve ever seen pulled off over a single episode lol

Jake White

I’m just gonna talk about this because I feel morally obligated, both the OP and ED for Spy x Family are some of the all time best openings/endings I have ever seen in anime. Instantly both in my top 10, maybe top 5. Musically, both songs have been in endless rotation for me since they came out, just two absolute bangers. The drums on the opening song are insane, and the ending is just so damn catchy and pleasant. Than there is endless analysis to do on the narrative genius of OP/ED, but just looking at the visuals with the dynamic rotating shots, changing backgrounds, use of color and movement, its an animation masterpiece. I truly hope both the OP/ED get the recognition from the community they deserve and go more viral to cement themselves into all time iconic status. I can’t stop watching both of them on repeat for weeks now.
