Man watching Hange's character grow is really amazing. I remember when I first started watching your commentary I wrote a whole paragraph in defense of Hange. It was my first ever comment on any platform! I was a Hange fangirl from the very beginning, but wow to see how far she, or any of the characters, have come really made me emotional. Especially after seeing you get teary I was ready to start crying.

"Suddenly, in Italy," "The path to inaction is right there for the taking, and also, probably looks pretty damn sweet," "I don't even think this is idealism. I think this is pragmatism. It's just a map that looks a little bit further," "Everyone has pain: spoiler alert," "Knowing that our hellish actions cause more hell," "Justify your worst evils if that makes you feel better and see where that gets you," "People are so quick to justify the extermination of others but can't even make minor improvements in their own life," "There are things worse than death. And there are greater rewards to be had than the continuation of life," "When confronted with wrongdoing, the instinct is to self-preserve," "Yelena might actually end up being clutch," "But how did he pass up a chance at Hange Stew seconds?" "Did Levi get soup? I feel like that's essential. For his recovery," "One of the greatest tragic jokes in history is 'This time it's different'," "One's outlook, as much as it feels like it was individually generated, is probably just a result of environment," (I kid you not, I turned in a 5 page essay on this EXACT topic last night. I still quoted Goodwin, of course, but this would have been PERFECT)

i agree Eren doesn't...but Mikasa on the other hand...Japan loves there incest-esque romantic stuff lmao

benj

only thing to counter here is that eren and mikasa very much do NOT see each other as siblings

phaedra mladen

Awesome! I haven't had the time to watch season 2 lmao maybe i'll start watching it this sunday. 2022 will be full of so many good anime

Kei

Not AoT related but it just got confirmed by the Mob Psycho 100’s creator in his Twitter bio that the third and final season WILL be airing this year, 2022!!! HYPE

benj

Very impressive. This must be one of the best commentaries I have seen you do. Just phenomenal! Thank you so much

I mean, I kind of agree, but there are some things that are non negotiable, like genicide being wrong. For example, you could justify the economic ramifications of slavery being abolished in the US in 1865, but keeping slavery is not an option. Sometimes you’ve gotta rip off the immediate bandaid and deal with the consequences later. Because the rest of the world being killed is the worst possible outcome. They should stop the worst outcome before trying to stop the second worst one. Also it’s not like Magath is king or anything, he really has very little political power.

I really like your argument about geography and people’s opinions, I have something to add to that. I think it all has to do with perspective, something that is practically impossible to evenly give to everyone. Common opinions are not just shared in geographical lines but in environmental lines. People in urban areas tend to have more similar beliefs with each other than with those in rural areas, even across country borders. There’s also the fact that the commonality of opinions in geographical borders can reinforce it, not simply by sitting in a circle and saying how great their ideology is, but by assuming the other country is the one who’s doing it. If country 1 says an ideology is stupid, without much discussion, even if at the end of the day, they are right, there still isn’t a lot of discussion on it, so country 2 with that ideology will simply assume the other country isn’t listening, which might be true, but doesn’t mean they are right. In short, they assume the other’s ignorance means their enlightenment. Due to this, I think geographical divisions in opinions will pursue until the end of time because it is impossible to give everyone total perspective. Society is fairly quick to leave topics in a Do Not Touch pile, and basically everything in their is probably there for a good reason, but the lack of discussion or the pretending of having a fair discussion (like making counter arguments to know you can easily counter) alienates one from prospective, which encourage others with that ideology to reinforce themselves by assuming that everyone else is a sheep with no perspective. Sidenote: Barring Eren and Reiner (Eren being my favorite of any show), Yelena is my favorite AOT villain. She combines a thinly veiled, insane zealotry with a strange swagger. She is not so different from characters like Eren, with a strong ideology that causes them to push forward. The thing about Yelena is that she does not need to “push” as I put it, her intellect allows her to simply walk through this territory that everyone struggles with, which is the reason for her abnormal swagger. This makes her extremely scary. Eren is scary in the sense that there is nothing that he will not do to get his goal, yet Yelena is the same, and despite the fact she is just a regular human, she still feels like a monolithic force of nature like Eren. Despite this regular, human person with no powers being in front of you get the feeling that you are an ant on the sidewalk, and that you will only live if don’t get in the way of her footsteps, because she not only won’t stop, but she won’t even waste any energy to walk around you, like you aren’t even worth keeping live if you even slightly deter her.

Eren is ironically a slave to freedom. Or at least the freedom he sees and wants.

Love your repeated take on your belief in doing the right thing (or at the least avoiding doing the wrong) as being pragmatic and not idealistic. It’s pragmatic because if focuses on the moment itself and not doing something you know is wrong despite the consequences and possible disruption of your ideal future. In fact, that’s why it’s the opposite of idealistic and why so many people find fault with idealism. It gets so caught up in a better future that it allows compromising of the now in pursuit of it. Eren is actually an idealist. Yes, he’s taking initiative, but it’s purely based upon his want for a specific future he envisions. If it weren’t for his pursuit of that fantasized future, I doubt he’d be committing genocide. But he so desperately wants that peaceful world for himself, he’s not looking at what’s in front of him. How is he making the world a better place by putting forth more pain and hurt? It’s like trying to clean up a spill with a wet paper towel. He’s not taking away anything, only adding to it. By taking things step-by-step, it becomes easier and more practical to see how you can take that stuff out of the world

When Reiner tells everyone what Marco's last words were..."We haven't even had the chance to talk this through" ... I thought instantly to your intitial reaction to the infamous 2x6 Reiner/Bert titan reveal episode where you were constantly just yelling at Mikasa to stop and were like "Guys just talk please, stop fighting for one second and just have a conversation for the love of god" and other stuff of that nature lmao. You really are just the Marco of this show.

benj

Man, every time I hear you dive into one of your philosophical examinations on society and the human condition, or the meaning of life in the universe (you know, that thing you do once an episode), I just think someone needs to go through and compile all of them together. It's so good. Honestly a huge part of why I watch. I'd like to go on a 20+ hour journey questioning existence with something like that.

Aidan Pullen

I swear, your episode synopses in the description never miss.

Maia Brodsky

I tear up every time I watch the part where Jean says, "Hange... I will forever be a Scout." To be a Scout has taken on so much more meaning in S4. To be a Scout is now to embody an ideal, to fight for what you know is right despite the immense sacrifice that could entail. To never give in to the temptation of compromising your character for the sake of personal satisfaction or convenience. I'm with you Goodwin. If that's what it means to be a Scout, I hope I can live my life like one. And DAMN, I felt your post-intro speech. You don't have to look much further than what is happening in the real world right now to see the consequences of ends-justify-the-means, us-vs-them thinking. Thank you for that analysis.

Steve.

This was probably my favorite episode by far this season besides Yimir's backstory. But I would like to point out something I still find deeply annoying with Hange Statement on "Genocide is wrong" First and foremost I agree with her Genocide is wrong. However by stopping Eren she is still allowing Genocide to continue. Just because its less people who are getting Genocided doesn't make it any less right. And what I mean by that is the Eldians in paradise are still the target of the entire world and are about to get genoicided themselves. Her saying Genoicde is wrong by not offering up any solution the fact their own race is about to get genoicded themselves is really irratating. I was hoping this issue would get resolved this episode as well since they litertally have the TOP General of Marley right there. At this point there are several things that Jean and the others could have demanded in Concessions from him before even helping him. Emancipation of the eldians in libero for starters which would directly effect every one there besides Magath and Yelena and im sure no one would object too. Which would be a huge blow to the yeagerist argument about needing the rumbling; You don't stop people lke the Yeagerist by Violance alone. The Yeagerist are currently a terroristic organization since they are pushing a political agenda via violence. That political viewpoint NEEDS a counter point and this is why Hange has failed considerably. I love Isyama writing its been top notch but I feel when it comes to politics he just doesn't understand how politics works. As some one who pays attention to politics in my own country I can safely state that is probably the weakest part of his writing. I am also not a manga reader so I don't know if this is addressed again so it might be who knows but so far as of this episode this is why im still frustrated with Hange.

John Carrizales

I knew you would pop off for the stew card 😂

Scoola

Seeing your face when Erwin appeared actually brought tears to my eyes, I like you share the same thoughts about him and also feel he is my favourite character. When I read the manga 2 years ago and I saw him there I had to put my phone down for 5 minutes because something came over me and I just couldn’t handle seeing him as a ghost like that. This opening sequence to an episode is beautiful and may be my favourite in the entire show. Showing Marco along with the sad but slightly hopeful music finishing with Jean saying he’s forever a scout is just too perfect

Sean Carroll

I remember reading Hange moment in the manga ,it left emotional ngl glad to see it done really good in the anime

Khalid

I really like how this show, especially recently, has been laying out the themes and messages pretty explicitly. It's like it's pointed directly at the audience members who, say, support Floch, or are on board with the rumbling. This is an insanely complex situation, it's all shades of grey, nobody's hands are clean -- but that still doesn't make a wrong thing right. I mean jeez, imagine the destruction and horror of the rumbling on innocent civilians in some random town who had absolutely nothing to do with this conflict. The families dying in terror and confusion. Now multiply that by a literally inconceivable amount all over the world. No amount of "self-defense" or "they started it" can possibly justify that.

Xylen

I love Hange, and I love the way she laid things out at the beginning. Genocide is wrong. It really is that simple. I understand the whole idea of it being "self-defense". I understand the Eldians were persecuted and the island was under attack. I understand that it's not as easy as just waving a white flag and asking people to get along. But genocide is wrong. "I'll be damned before we justify it somehow."

Xylen

I'm pretty sure it's already been confirmed that this season isn't covering all of the remaining manga material, so I'm not sure what form the true finale will take (movie seems likely) but it definitely won't be wrapped up in the next few weeks.

Xylen

oh you questioned if this was the last episode for a second, im pretty sure there are 3 more. but it’s pretty likely we’ll get a movie as a finale. the amount of episodes left is too little to cover the rest of the story. that or a long finale.
