In Fruits Basket 2x23, It's Cinderella-Ish, Yuki grants the school's continued wish to see him dress as a woman, Hanajima grants her own wish to eat yakiniku during school hours, and Tohru grant's Kyo's wish for any excuse to stop pretending he's ok living in a cage.

While it's not a play, MHA also has a really amazing performance. Although I guess that's less the performance itself and what happens around it

Alex G

Yakiniku wasn't the only thing roasted on stage that day

Alex G

This episode is such a hoot

Jacob Keyser

@Onigiri The yakiniku shop is my favorite arc of FB by FAR!! @ benj yeah, i really don't see why you would be taking about murder, seeing how it happened in aot, and THEN in cinderella-ish when Uotani absolutely *DECIMATED* Kyo with the 'it's no wonder you're still a virgin' line

Geneva The Weeba

@Geneva LMAO Right...I totally wasn't talking about the whole mass murder of children and innocent people thing

benj

Fruits Basket's play was a summary of future events. Next episode is the grand opening of Tohru and Hana's yakiniku shop while they wait for Kyo to work through his character arc.

Onigiri

@benj. oh yeah for sure. Only Fruits Basket wasn't a summary of past events. so sad they broke the pattern

Geneva The Weeba

One of these is not like the others...

benj

My 3 favorite shows have a play episode: 1. Fruits Basket: Cinderella-ish 2. ATLA: The Ember Island Players 3. Attack on Titan: Declaration of War

Katrina Vieira

There are so many lines in this play that have double meanings. Yuki telling Kyo he has to work for his wishes on his own for example Yuki had his character development and is basically throwing hints at Kyo that he needs a new character arc lmao

Nick

True and underrated detail. Tohru, despite being S tier status amazing wholesome person isn't perfect

Nick

I have a real problem with Arisa's line on the play. I grew up with her saying the opposite in my french version of the manga, which was way more subtitle. She wasn't saying "I want to see him" but "Go and see her". That could apply to both Kyo in the play and Kureno. Overall a great episode, I love how Tohru is denying her feelings to Kyo. It's not one sided, they both have stuff to work on.

Evalone

I have huge respect for the narrator/chorus actor for improvising so much to save the play, the unspoken MVP

Nick

This episode is super uplifting and happy, a nice change from “Familial Trauma: The Anime”. Seeing pretty much the full play fully animated out and acted was amazing, for me this is the second best animated play in a tv show just behind The Ember Island Players recap episode in ATLA. Also your cat is precious. A majestic Huskie and a cute cat, you’re becoming the main character of a studio ghibli movie.

benj

yeah as a manga reader i'm really not excited for this sadly 😭 people who know know why lol

Francesca White

i love ur cat <3 also i'm so excited for these last 2 eps i can't wait to see what u think o.o

Brimmy

Did anyone catch the trailer for the 2022 OVA? SPOILERS! https://ogre.natalie.mu/media/news/comic/2021/1215/furuba_prelude_visual02_logo.jpg. Those footprints!

ArmdVctr

The narrator CARRIED the Cinderella-ish. I think the whole play would of fell apart without him

Megan

I know it’s all about preference, but sometimes I really appreciate the subtitled version on some of these episodes. Nothing wrong with the dub actors but whowee the dialog pacing sends me for a loop. But I super appreciate your reactions so I’m fffffine with it!

Mattie Grandstaff

Lol Kyo's revenge. Fun fact a LONG TIME AGO my cat gave birth to kittens, one orange and one grey, and I happened to be watching the first Fruits Basket anime at that time so I named them Kyo and Yuki haha

Alex G

Well looks like Kyo so embarrassed. He broke the 4th wall and showed up to wreck your room. 😂

Eatchu

Tohru's friends are some of the best characters in this series, and it's always cathartic when people watching the series the first time around realize how truly excellent they are, rather than just being the background characters 'Tohru's friends'

Geneva The Weeba

I know he doesn't think about himself as a prince but something about that line almost sounded disappointed. And this isn't Yuki but just in general, if you get that kind of treatment, even if you don't like it part of you gets attached to it at the same time to the point where you're affected by its absence.

Alex G

This is my go to comfort episode, the play makes me chuckle every time, and I love seeing so many of the group all together supporting their friends. Also Hanajima just steals the show every time she's in a scene, and I can't even be mad at it she's amazing! I also love how many chances Hanajima takes to just call Kyo out on his bullshit, and just pokes at his feelings for Tohru to make sure he knows that she knows about them and will not let it go. I think on some level it's just some light teasing, but I like how in her own way she kind of gently (in her own way) pushes against his walls and boundaries to try and keep him moving. I feel like there always ends up being a moment where Hanajima uses her wave report to kind of poke and prod at him whenever he starts to stagnate or get complacent, and if that's not intentional then it's just really good timing and I appreciate it either way. On that note, if you remember back to the first season when they had all gone out together to visit Kyoko's grave, once Uo-chan and Hana-chan had separated from Tohru and the boys, they had a conversation about how the boys are getting better after being around Tohru. They say that Yuki has chilled out, followed by this from Uo: "And, no matter what Kyon says he definitely cares about Tohru. Maybe one day he'll actually find some courage and confess his love to her." I've always found it subtle foreshadowing and super interesting that they don't talk as if both the boys are in love with her, they don't assume or ever discuss Yuki being in love with her, they explicitly only bring up a confession of love when talking about Kyo and I love it. I love the idea that both of her friends were so aware even that early on how things were going to play out, especially with how much you see Hanajima pushing Kyo to acknowledge his own feelings.

HarperBeeHave

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS " In light of this season which has been heavy blow after heavy blow after gut punch after head kick in a row-" *violently guffaws and sobs in season three* BOY we ain't seen *NOTHING* yet

Geneva The Weeba

Jujutsu Kaisen I will definitely continue at some point but maybe closer to season 2. I sort of have a dilemma with Arcane because I started doing it but I wasn't really satisfied with the reaction. I haven't decided yet if I'm gonna post it haha

Alex G

Idk why but he seems to have trouble telling characters apart in this show 😭 like even well established ones he'll be like "who is that" LMAO. maybe it's just because he usually watches shows like MHA with crazy character designs but dang I didn't think they all look THAT similar, I can tell them apart 😭

Francesca White

No, Yuki doesn't see himself as a prince 😭 it's the OPPOSITE, EVERYONE ELSE sees Yuki that way, even Tohru, but Machi doesn't that's why he was surprised by her reading who he truly was and not seeing him the same way the rest of the school does

Francesca White

Just to be clear, what Kyo and Tohru are "not letting themselves think" is Tohru having feelings for Kyo. It seems like you thought it was just about Kyo getting locked up, and while that's part of it, what I think you missed was Kyo having a realization that Tohru might have feelings for him, but he immediately shuts that thought out and thinks it's stupid. We see at the end of the episode they both do that

Francesca White

i know it's for comedic effect but i do cringe at the thought of 17 year old Hana flirting with 40 year old Kyo's father LMAOO, good thing Master is a good person that wouldn't go for a high schooler

Francesca White

And the one similarity Yuki and Kyo have that stands out is that Tohru arrived to give them both the pushes they needed

Nick

Just occurred to me how big the parralel is between Yuki being secluded from everyone as a child and Kyo being locked up from everyone in the future Truly birds of the same feather... that's the saying right? Eh whatever you get what I mean. Kyo and Yuki have had pretty big parallels set up since the beginning. Same as Kyo and Tohru like I've mentioned on previous videos

Nick

Not sure if you caught it, but the woman clapping at Cinderella's entrance to the ball was Mrs. Hanajima! Gotta stan the Hanajima family. They're all so great (can't believe you forgot about best boy Megumi, tbh)

Geneva The Weeba

Have you considered continuing jujutsu kaisen or reacting to arcane? Arcane is based off the game league of legends but you dont have to know anything about the game to enjoy the show. I dislike league of legends and arcane is still one of my favorite shows of all time.

DefaultGoblin

My favorite character in the play HAS to be the, narrator, Hiroshi. That poor boy had to put up with so much tomfoolery and so many adlibs. (Plus, he shares an English VA with my boy MIRIO!!)

Geneva The Weeba

This episode is some much needed lighthearted-ness. With some heavier stuff still layered in of course. I think so much of Kyo’s behavior since episode nine of this season demonstrates just how much he’s trying to give up and resign himself to living in a cage.
