Deku is now spider-man.

Haha Invisible Girl has had some nice moments that take the edge off of that fateful Kirishima room comment. Mushroom girl has not had the same opportunity yet....

Super Strength evolved into ToolbeltTM, new ability Black Whip unlocked! I heard someone describe it like that once, and One for All has been Toolbelt in my mind ever since. Although I'm still confused why he'll unlock six more, given that he's already using the First User's power and All Might was quirkless? Unless he meant that Black Whip was one of the six, because Deku will still have to learn how to use it? On second thought, that's probably it, huh... Anyway, I'm glad they also evolved Uraraka's motivation. The inital one didn't bother me, but it's cool to have some representation for how these things can change over time, I think. Btw, has Mushroom Girl taken over Invisible Girl's spot now?

The girl with the ghost quirk is named Emily for the horror film “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” which was based on a real life story (where a young girl was mistakenly believed to be possessed)

[insert past me explaining what i remember from the manga while future me types this to say this is all literally how the manga went] in the MHA discord back in the day we all lost our fucking minds because we had only GUESSED that deku would have multiple quirks, and then it was like \u have to master all of these\ ITS SO COOL i say that and then read the comments here that don't like how the show is going and i have to pause because i am not caught up with the manga, i am not caught up with S5 so i can't be like \this is amazing\ i've grown up i'm no longer THAT obsessive over this anime and its manga more importantly why is her Hero name Emily??? idk the next ep is gonna be amazing either way

Brimmy

Sounds like a pretty good parallel with what happened with All Might, where everyone (except endeavor) basically gave up on trying to compete with him. We're gonna get a lot more on this concept of Deku above/apart from everyone else in the future though.

Gotta be honest I have really come to dislike this introduction of new quirks for Deku. It starts making Class 1-A irrelevant. What would once require help from Dekus classmates can be solved with a quirk of his.

Etsch

So I've been asked in Q&A's a few times what I like and dislike about MHA. Finding things I like about it has always been the easy part. I've never really had a solid answer for things I dislike. Thinking about it recently though, I do have a critique of at least certain episodes. There are moments where a lot is introduced REALLY quickly, and the events and antagonists fit the moral of the story a little too neatly, almost as if they're there not as people or characters but vehicles for someone else's growth. In hindsight, I felt this way about the Koda episode, where the villain was just "Koda threat incarnate" after having just been introduced, and (even though it was a fantastic episode) the season 4 finale with Endeavor with the Nomu who just fit Endeavor's flaws a little too perfectly. This episode I think also suffers from something similar, where just so much happens so quickly, and as you pointed out we get a quick nice neat wrap-up to the issue to the point where we can even continue the school's exercise. Though I can see a positive element to this approach as well. I feel like in the past, this episode would have been 10 episodes long and stretched out to it's maximum. Between that and this, I'll choose this neat wrap up and then just hope we can start to do really cool things with the powers.

Alex G

I feel like that Aizawa moment would have been great to include cause the way it came across to me is that the teachers are just slow to react lmao

Alex G

I think I now know :D

Alex G

I can see how it might feel like these new powers are shoehorned in. It definitely does blow open the doors in terms of what Deku can do. But as long as it's used towards the typical MHA goodness in terms of character and story etc I'm on board

Alex G

Dude you are trying too hard to make this way deeper then it really is...

Ramon Cintron

Im sorry but episodes like this make me really dislike this show and takes away fro its good moments. The talking and monologing is just way too much and the moment we get something interesting happening with the quirk loosing control someone fixes the issue right away and we have a deus ex machina guy come in and just tell Deku and us everything that happened and explaining stuff cause the show thinks were too stupid to figure out things over time with out this guy coming in and telling us exactly what happened why it happened and that deku will get 6 more powers etc and how to control his new power. I rather we learn things gradually and in a way that doesnt feel like a forced info dump down our throats

Ramon Cintron

Monoma is a truly underrated character, I've always liked him even though he can be annoying. He's endearing at the same time

Nick

Monoma's hero name being Phantom Thief is so perfect when you consider he was the main hypeman of the Class B play they produced. Dude is a theatre kid, instantly gains my respect Not to mention his entire outfit is themed to phantom really well

Nick

What I think a lot of the fandom glosses over this episode, or just doesn't realize, is the overwhelming grief and loss that Deku felt here. He's getting the hang of One For All, able to move around well, fighting well, introducing new moves, all without getting hurt. As of the start of this episode, he's on a linear progression towards getting that full 100% OFA power. As time goes on, Deku will be able to make use of more and more of OFA without hurting his body, and so becoming closer and closer to emulating his ideal of helping others and becoming the number 1 hero. I'd equate his state at the moment to when you're learning a new language and the sentence structure finally, FINALLY clicks. You can string together your own sentences, and the road from here is more vocabulary, verb tenses, negation, and of course longer, more complex sentences using many parts of speech. He is, let's say, mildly conversational in the main power of OFA. BUT NOW he's shoved to the floor and told "Yeah, you may be well on your way to speaking language number *one*, but NOW you have to learn six MORE languages and you're starting over from square one on all six," It has taken FOUR FULL SEASONS to get to the point that he can fight and function in control of himself, without needing to resort to injuring himself for efficacy's sake. The boy isn't even at half the power of the main OFA quirk. *But the light at the end of the tunnel was THERE*. It was VISIBLE. NOW, he's essentially got to go through four full seasons of power control again, six additional times over. Of course, maybe he starts a few steps ahead on additional quirks one-six, due to his recent experience in OFA, his increased muscle mass, the fact that he knows what having a quirk is LIKE now, but at this point, *we don't even know what five of the quirks ARE*. Deku doesn't know what type of quirks they may be, how taxing their use will be, the learning curve, the actual utility of the quirks, ANYTHING. The only thing we DO know about all of the new quirks is that they are all going to be more powerful than they were to their original owners. Deku is being told that he is getting six new powers (five COMPELETELY UNKNOWN as of now) that will be harder to manage than it was for their *owners* (the ones who honed that quirk IN THE FIRST PLACE), that he will need to learn them all almost from scratch, that he has infinitely more work ahead of him if he wants to be great, and ALL THIS comes *before* he's mastered OFA's main power to even HALF the extent that he knows exist. Deku is JUST getting the hang of his power. Though he's not by any means LOST any grounds in his progress in the race, he's now running six. more. marathons. All from the starting line. WITHOUT ANY HEADS-UP EITHER, MIND YOU. Banjo, kind, pumped up, and well intentioned as he was, threw curveball after curveball at Deku, who hasn't even had ANY quirk for even a YEAR at this point. To bring it back to the languages analogy, you speak English as a baseline, and you can order food and make small talk on the bus in Spanish. Now you are REQUIRED to learn, in tandem with improving your Spanish, Russian! With a different set of sentence structure, pronunciation, as well as an entirely new alphabet. Not only that, you need to learn five MORE languages, not of your choosing, completely unknown, all with utterly separate alphabets and applications. Some of these languages might not even be useful in a situation. (Think learning Icelandic when you live in Nebraska.) Now, I don't know about you guys, but I would be CRUSHED. This is such a DAUNTING task. Take any great endeavor or mission, not yet halfway done, and add six more. Six more marathons, six more languages, six more mountains to climb. While we do see Deku break for a second here, tearing up, it is SUCH a testament to his character that he was able to find new resolve and drive here and continue on with the match. But my God, the weight Deku had placed on his shoulders already was weight enough. It's just going to get more crazy from here on out. Rant over. Sorry for the long post.

I've heard that the author has had to include less and less romance into the show because of the toxic shipping side of the fanbase who have sent death threats to him as well. Kinda sucks cause I'm a huge fan of romance and would love to see some of that between the members of class 1-A as there would OBVIOUSLY be huge crushes and romances with that group of kids. instead weve basically gotten nothing, the most we have gotten is season one with deku and ururaka, thats basically it. Sad.

benj

Yeah it's not explicitly stated I think, but that's my take on it too.

jdthebud

Regarding romance in a fighting shonen, I'd say that Deku and Uraraka is pretty believable and sweet so far. Not too little interaction since they're young and shy (remember they've only known each other less than a year) but also the interactions that they do have are wholesome and show that the growth they are experiencing is both mutual and different because of their personal wishes. Gotta love couples that grow together.

Kelsey Roberts

for clarity one for all users: 1. all for ones brother 2. unknown 3. unknown 4. unknown 5. unknown 6. unknown 7. all might's master (unknown quirk) 8. all might (no quirk) 9. deku (no quirk) one of the unknowns (2-6) is the guy that deku met this episode who had the blackwhip quirk.

joe martin

Woooo! The biggest spoiler of My Hero Academia finally has been revealed haha. This is such a cool route that they do for the series and while some people say it makes Deku OP, I feel like they give more utility rather than make him stupid broken. Also in the dub they cut out some wholesome Aizawa dialogue from the end where he says the match will continue because all of their hearts are still in it to win it. I love that since it just adds to the subtle personality of loving his class that he shows.

Skyler Anderson

Exactly. Deku is the 9th user. Him and All Might had no powers to add. The first user created the quirk, so you’d count his as strength. So you’ve got strength, black whip, and five others.

Nick A Sam III

Shinzo unlocks OFA’s vestiges because Deku is basically asleep when he’s being controlled. His mind isn’t active and they can reach him directly. He’s passive in that state and they can reach him. That’s why he had that vision while sleeping and visions while his body was taken over.

Nick A Sam III

Bakugo is probably punching air off-screen right now

Deiondre0

So that "6 more" there is including Blackwhip as well. That wording can be confusing, so 6 more on top of One For All, but I think you got that lol.

SS

Finally, the time has come. When I read this part in the manga I was like OMG. Pretty sure I smacked myself in surprise. Would it be a spoiler to tell you how many quirks have been revealed in the manga without giving names and descriptions?

BotheredAsh

So yes, this marked a huge turning point in the story. But also it’s where some people jumped ship. Because of the dreaded power creep… And to clarify there are six additional quirks inside of OfA, and Deku just unlocked the first of them. In the manga the full set has almost been completely revealed to us, but the how, when, and why, we’ll keep a secret.

Matthew Richson

Been waiting for this one.
