In Fruits Basket 2x20, Are You Okay? Yuki is more than okay he's crushing it as he deftly handles the tasks of play planning, crisis management, tolerating Short Stack, paint huffing, all the while learning life lessons and growing in the process.

This fills me with joy

Silent Shadow

Awww, I love that tidbit about Hanajima! Rightfully so, she is very pretty!

That little moment where Yuki laughs at the fact that his mother acted like a mother always makes me want to cry. Its such a mundane thing but it demonstrates so much growth both from Yuki and even a little bit from his mom. Oh and i don't know if anyone else has commented this yet, but in the manga the author (Takaya sensei) left a little authors note that said that Hanajima was cast as Cinderella because she was secretly popular amongst the entire class (a.k.a they all think she's really pretty hehe) ..just a fun thing i thought i would add lol

Crystalrose

I think I know what you are talking about and I can't wait.

If the Rin’s backstory was my second favorite episode then the next episode coming up is my absolute favorite. It was always my favorite chapter in the manga but once it was finally animated I was in tears with how they brought it to life.

Yuki is one the most interesting character in this series, along with Tohru and Akito. For me, they really are at the center of it, the ones with the deepest meanings. What Yuki is yearning from is the same as Isuzu, he said it himself. Finally, episode 21 coming. One the best, and TMS directing is fantastic to transcrive it.

Evalone

Not to mention the parallels between their upbringing. Yuki is in some ways being raised to be head of the Somas. He has had a lot of pressure put on him by his parents (mother specifically) just like Machi Machi is also quiet and pretty reserved like Yuki was when he was younger after being kept in the dark

Nick

aaah so excited for these last couple episodes left!! i love yuki’s arc, as you said he really became someone to lean on and i love how they took their time showing us his growth. not only that but the play is one of my favorite parts, i’m so excited for you to see it!

lineth pizarro

Yuki's magical because everything that happens with him and the student council is a result of Tohru's influence.

I'm just grateful that I discovered this channel. I've had so many great discussions while also getting introduced to amazing stories like this And yeah it's great to see the fruits basket patreon presence grow

Nick

I love seeing more comments and likes on the Fruits Basket videos!! They are just as active on the patreon as the MHA vids which is pretty impressive and makes me feel good. This is truly a unique community to so quickly enjoy diving into a full on Shoujo romance classic. I love it here.

Caitlin Glass is a legend

Francesca White

The garden started blooming so Yuki gifted Machi the opportunity to make her own, if that makes sense. All of that contained in a kind gesture

Nick

Your flower and garden analogy is extra amazing considering Yuki has gone on to help improve other people's lives by being himself. Him giving Machi that maple leaf after the school trip is a perfect example god I love this show

Nick

Makes it extra perfect because Yuki has continued the cycle by handing Machi the maple leaf in a moment that was significant to her. Alex hit the nail on the head

Nick

HUFFING PAINT My *GOSH*, i love your descriptions

Geneva The Weeba

So I don't know if I said so already, but Machi is played by Caitlin Glass who also plays Mina Ashido in MHA as well as Winry Rockbell in FMA. Also, I'm fairly certain Kaminari's VA plays one of the boys in Yuki and Kyo's class.

BotheredAsh

This is awesome. I like Kakeru even more now

Nicely said. I really like the idea of acceptance in relationships. On a number of occasions, shifting the viewpoint from needing other people to be a certain way to trying to accept them for who they were and seeing both their good moments and bad moments as part of the human experience that I also share has been something that has allowed the relationships to take on healthier forms and, ironically, to get them to a point where I am getting what I need from them. And I think that is represented really well by Yuki's interactions with his mother, where he no longer sees her as this exclusive source of love or personal self worth but as the woman she is, and that seems to have allowed him to interact with her in a much healthier way.

Alex G

Since Kakeru's backstory is FINALLY revealed, I'm reposting my 'kakeru is the best' post from a few episodes back lol Ok, everyone, Kakeru Manabe is my favorite character in FB, and the entire anime genre for that matter. Here's why. (long post warning) He's already DONE. He's gone through his story arc of sucession and being born to his father's mistress, and it is over. He decided he was done with that life, and convinced his mother of the same thing. He has escaped the circumstances of his birth and is now self assured, confident, and a good person. Often in TV, anime, movies, there's a realized character, (think Uncle Iroh), but even then, we don't know the backstory prior to their onscreen entrance until much later. Such characters are often absolutely integral to the plot, having previous relationships with antagonists, knowing secrets about the plot, protagonist, or antagonist. I could go on. And while Kakeru is a vital part of Fruit Basket's storyline, he's not directly involved with the Somas apart from his relationship with Yuki. He doesn't know any other Somas except in passing at school, He doesn't know any of the plot secrets we've uncovered in these past episodes, He's just THERE, a fully realized self, happy, positive, confident, joking, playful, wonderful friend and person. He's done with his arc. He's basically done with his trauma. His backstory has been aired, and for the most part, there aren't any questions there. He's free to be who he is; a crazy, fun, inspiring person. Despite his chaotic exterior, Kakeru is a reliable person by all accounts. He's his school's student council vice president, he has a brimming social life, an after school job, and a girlfriend. His relationship with her is strong enough that he has absolutely no issue saying that he loves her to those around him. And what does he do with his realized self? He takes care of Machi, watching over her, dealing with her rampages, calmly, maturely, and swiftly. He embodies the 'introvert finds friends because extrovert adopts them' to a T, becoming extrordinarily good friends. He parents the student council, or school defense force, with team building, and provides levity to any situation that warrants it. He is an amazing friend to Yuki, anabashedly himself, playfully physically affectionate (the touch starved Yuki HAS to be grateful for this, I'm sure), noticeably distraught at the prospect of losing Yuki as a friend. He sees that Yuki cares for Tohru, and cheering his friend on, inquires as to their relationship, warns that Kyo may be getting close to her, and pretends to be interested himself to find what is important to Yuki. If Yuki were to pursue a romantic relationship with Tohru, he would have Kakeru's full support. He want the absolute best for Yuki, because he is such an impressive person and incredible friend, all without sacrificing himself.

Geneva The Weeba

Kakeru's point about how it's okay to leave the shirt misbuttoned and that things can just be good enough is very powerful, for me anyway. This is a dynamic I have within my life that I've struggled with for years, battling with mixed emotions, wanting to keep that person in my life but not being able to be as open with them as I once was. Getting resolution within a relationship doesn't have to mean either making the relationship perfect and flawless or cutting the person out completely. It's okay if your feelings are complicated. It's okay if there are boundaries with the other person that weren't there before. It's okay to put a limit to how much you'll let someone remain in your life without getting rid of them completely. That relationship doesn't need to fit the mold of and look like what is considered the normal standard. The buttons can be crooked. Of course It's important that the relationship is still healthy, physically and emotionally, with both parties boundaries being respected.

Your theory of what Yuki wants/needs from Tohru are SPOT ON

Brimmy

just gotta say i'm SO excited for the next episode, it's one of the best in my opinion

Francesca White

Loving the reactions!!

Mattie Grandstaff

idk why but i really love the moment where Machi breaks down the door with the chair, there's something so badass about this to me lol. like despite her destructive tendencies she reads other people, and she does what she can to help them. maybe she even saw herself in Yuki.

Francesca White

I think i would like to rewatch the whole series later on. That would be a good opportunity to watch the original in full :)

Alex G

fun fact: the author actually confirmed that the reason Hanajima got the role of Cinderella is that she's secretly really popular with the boys in her class, they think she's really pretty and mysterious so they wanted to see her in the Cinderella role lol

Francesca White

Tohru gave yuki a flower and he planted a garden...I love that analogy!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰

raesh

Dude is genuinely awesome Edit: I binged all of season 2 yesterday night so I'll have more to say after watching the video

Nick

I need a friend like Kakeru

Nick

while i love both the sub and dub for this episode, this is one i'd highly recommend checking out the sub for. Yuki's performance is just amazing in the sub, his tone of voice really reflects his character development. it's hard to explain, but it's like he's become less uptight and more loose with his performance, and he sounds more open and innocent. i say check out the sub for this episode, but i guess for the performance to be really great you'll need context for how he normally sounds in the sub lol
