Fruits Basket 2x18 Reaction Extended (YT version below)

Comments

Personally I'd rather be hated from the start. At least then I won't feel like people will flip at any moment. It would be like living my whole life on a tightrope, waiting to fall

Samy EN

I dunno. Them showing up to tell Rin that they no longer wanted to see her or be with her is one of the most outright malicious things we've ever seen any parent do in show. If anything, faking that they were all happy only to pull a drastic 180 and then tell her that they hated her might've done more damage than simply detesting her from the start.

BirthdayParty

When people ask me what Fruits Basket is about… I just say TRAUMA and remember this episode among others

Stephanie

Finally caugh up with your reactions thanks to patreon x) I have mixed feelings about Isuzu's parents. Sure, what they did is terrible. But I respect that they tried to make it work, despite the strain that raising a zodiac represents. Just like Momiji's mom, who only turn the violence towards herself, I would have love to learn more about them. Because there is so many parents out there who would have just beat her up from the start... We have to give Akito's credit, though. He's very perceptive and every time you think he's done the worst thing possible, he can go even higher ^^ Finally getting into the best episodes of seaon 2 in my eyes. Isuzu's backstory is horrifying. And I want to say I love that they put Haseru Mirai, the song that played at the end of Yuki's beach episode, to represents Isuzu's mind here. A clever way to link these two characters, who have much in common.

Evalone

I love how everyone's just giving paragraph long thoughts and then i'm just over here like UGHHHH HARU STAHP i will forever be surprised at how mature this series is compared to the original also the scar on rin's back was shown a couple episodes ago

Brimmy

I was actually a bit confused on this because in the hospital, Kazuma (Kyo's master) wanted Rin's parents to come and explain her injuries. So at that time I assumed her parents gave her that scar Thanks for the clarification

Nick

Lol whenever I think of her I think of Ciel Phantomhive

Francesca White

Tohru gives me strong therapist vibes, I wonder if Takaya has a degree in psychology.

Onigiri

Natsuki Takaya is incredibly private about her own life (even her real name isn't given, though i think its on her wiki), but I wonder how shes so able to accurately write about trauma and the feelings people go through.

Ietseatapples

Oh my goodness. It makes so much more sense now. I didn’t even think about it before.

Silent Shadow

I'd say it's only Hiro and Kagura tbh, Kisa and Ritsu's are not as bad as the rest, clearly, but it is said that they were too overprotective and restrictive, that's why they both have problems to relate and talk to others. In the case of Haru and Shigure it is mentioned that their partens didn't care much about them, just got the money and left them alone to do whatever they wanted.

Vaneni

21:58 "You got off easy"- part a million of Goodwin speaking too soon

Nyashaxo

On a note completely outside the gut-wrenching, visceral, emotional trauma trip masterpiece that this episode was, I just realized that Brina Palencia, outside of Rin, also voices the dub for Rei from EVA, and also Mad Moxxi from Borderlands. Fantastic voice actor. She's got a lot of other really neat roles, and she's pretty loaded in general. She does an excellent job this episode, and as Rin in general.

Aaron Ong

Just looked back and interestingly enough, this is the Fruits Basket reaction with the most comments on it (78 comments bruh) of the entire show! Honestly kinda suprised this episode is currently holding that title, not that it isn't an amazing episode because it sure is. I'm positive future episodes will exceed this amount tho.

benj

Okay this episode hit closer to home compared to the first time I watched it. This past week was my last few days with my kindergarten class that I had been observing for my credential program. My guide teacher is so amazing in that she has quite a hand full of trouble makers in her class but is constantly able to show them the love they deserve. However, she had been hitting her limits with a particularly troublesome student. My knowledge of this student had been minimal. Stories my teacher had told me about him is that his mom had face tattoos and he once made up a story that his mom wanted to beat my teacher up. She either brought him late to school or not at all, and would drop him off with fast food for lunch. His outbursts in class and constant misbehaviors made me think, yes, of course he acts this way because of his home life. Right after our class Halloween party, I came in a week or so after and was told that he had been missing along with his mother. I felt in shock. I had just seen him not long ago and his grandpa would come to the school to check if any faculty had been informed of their whereabouts, to which no one had any idea. A few weeks go by and suddenly, he's back, out of no where. My teacher pulls him aside to ask him about where he's been. He explains how he "went on vacation" with his mom. They were driving in the car back home with an unnamed person when the cops pulled them over. He described the police dragging his mom out of the car and her screaming, "Tell my baby I love him!" The police were saying, "He knows." CPS placed him with his aunt, someone who had two kids and had evidence of her life being organized and together. She was happy to take him in. The next week he showed up to school with new clothes, a great sign. Now, his troublemaking did not miraculously stop because he was living with a healthy family. No, trauma stays and he showed it by choking out one of his classmates right before they were heading over to lunch. The other student started bawling his eyes out as my teacher brought "Mr. Trouble" to the principal to have lunch and talk about his actions. My teacher was highly aware to be on the lookout for signs of abuse due to his case worker informing her, and this was an absolute red flag. She spoke with the principal about asking him where he learned to do that and his response still brings tears to my eyes. He said, "My Tio does it to me and makes me fly." Implying that his uncle puts his hands on this innocent five-year-old enough to lift him off the ground! I am still processing this experience since it is still fresh and I just cannot believe how a grown adult would ever, EVER, put their hands on a child. A KINDERGARTNER. MY kindergartner...My take away from this is that you can never truly know why a student/person is acting the way they are. There are so many things that happen behind the scenes and basing your judgment on someone with only surface level impressions can be harmful. This child's actions had WAY more to them than, "Oh, they just don't like school," or, "It's their mom's fault that they're like this." I am overjoyed that he is no longer in a toxic home and actually gets love and time to be a kid.

Athena

Its like "Yun-Yun" but for Haru! I kinda like it.

benj

I also love how Yuki is kind of being a wingman for Kyo in a weird way. Like, I'm kind of glad they're not going for the over the top love triangle. Right now it feels more like Yuki really cares about and respects Tohru, but it's not... forced if that makes sense? Everything feels natural about how he feels and not overdone Next comment will be I'm regards to this episode

Nick

This is actually related to the last episode, but I have a prediction that I don't think is very unrealistic. Yuki is going to end up with Machi, the quiet girl in the student council. I think he would probably also help her open up more because she seems similar to how he was for years after being kept in the darkness. Plus that transition shot where he gives her the falling leaf is a bit too glowy and perfect.

Nick

I relate...uncomfortably well to Rin's story. This episode is probably the one that gets me most in Fruits Basket. It was extremely difficult to watch, but also one of the first episodes of an anime that honestly legitimately felt validating? In a weird way? The depiction of trauma and PTSD and what it can do to your body and mind over time is so thoughtfully and accurately handled. I was thankfully already in a better place when I first saw this, but it honestly made me want to pause and go hug and thank all of my friends that helped me figure out how to walk to road to recovery. Genuine love and support can be terrifying, but it's so needed. This episode gave me a lot of feelings and really just got me firmly attached to Rin as a character. I think we all have find that thing in Fruits Basket that reminds us things will be okay even if they're hard and that patience, love, and fighting for the nerve to be alive will always be worth it, Rin and Yuki as characters have really become that for me, and they're characters I always look back on when I want to remember how far I've come /and/ when I want to remember how far I can go.

HarperBeeHave

Yeah... I know. He didn't make the short trip I'm on

Alex G

Not at all :D

Alex G

There are some really standout scenes for sure

Alex G

Such a heart-wrenching and tragic story for Rin. I can't even make jokes about glass. Akito is a terrible, messed-up person but other important things were revealed in the episode. Shigure sneered at the idea that he was Akito's favorite - that felt very true and his bitterness about it was sharp. It seems that where everyone else wants to be free from Akito, he might want something different from the curse breaking. I think he wants it broken but for his own reasons. Haru is a first year in high school (15, maybe now 16) and that flashback was from before that - he's a early bloomer, shall we say? I think Rin is third year, so 17/18. Akito has a very deep-seated grudge against women, as if they are all trying to "steal" the male zodiac members. But then why didn't Akito beat up Kagura (Kisa also ended up in the hospital because of Akito, Hatori's love was driven mad, Tohru got her face torn)? Because Kyo doesn't count, or because Akito knew somehow that Kyo didn't/wouldn't return those feelings? Maybe the girl zodiacs are all supposed to love Akito only as well as the men? It's so twisted. Tohru's activation incoming! Not that she wasn't already motivated, but this will push her even more.

Serralinda

Remember back when Hiro entered the show and Goodwin said his mom must be doting? Yeah, Satsuki's the absolute GOAT of the Soma moms

Geneva The Weeba

Domestic abuse is not handled by criminal courts in Japan. It is treated as a social cultural issue that is handled via social services. FruBa mostly champions the idea of rehabilitive/restoritive justice as opposed punitive justice.

ArmdVctr

I don't recall you ever expressing curiosity as to where Rin got the scar on her back, but it's from where she fell on the rock that was on the ground after Akito pushed her.

Geneva The Weeba

I love writing stories and whenever I have a character who suffers through family type abuse I always turn to Rin’s backstory for inspiration. Takaya treated her situation with such understanding and care, no other backstory has ever touched me or inspired me the way this one does. It’s the small things from her waiting outside to see if her parents are in a good mood, or patently waiting and praying for the day when they will ‘forgive her’ and things will go back to normal. It’s all so realistic and that is what makes it so heartbreaking.

Kimberly Oblinger

Sweater lord was called back to the cosmos briefly

Nick

"Where are all the hot babes? I thought the estate would be packed with chicks" -Rin, Fruits Basket.

Nick

Ah, yes, my favorite Fruits Basket character: Haru-Haru The sequel to Jean-John

Geneva The Weeba

Even though I know it to be true. I CANNOT accept that the voice actor who delivered this heartbreaking performance as Rin is also Class 1-A's resident perv.

Geneva The Weeba

@benj bro every time someone compliments the dub you always come in saying the sub is better 😭 we know you like it lmaoo, but yeah just joking with you it's just funny

Francesca White

Only Kisa, Hiro, Ritsu, and Kagura won the good Zodiac Parent award. We never find out about Haru, Shigure, Kureno's and Hatori's

ArmdVctr

This reaction was missing Sweater Lord......0_0 Are we all gonna die? What happens now? What's the truth....What to believe......in my life.....

benj

No Sweaterlord? What has this world come to?

Geneva The Weeba

you...watched the episode without sweater lord..? :0

Sweetbun

Brina Palencia's performance for this episode as Rin honestly exceeded my expectations, with the moment she repeatedly says "Don't yell at me." it conveys fear, despair, helplessness, and hopelessness.

Trey Goldsworthy

Tbh I have no clue what they're talking about @benj I think it's alright, at least from someone who hasn't finished the story Only thing I can guess is that Akito gets character development in some form which tbh I am already expecting

Nick

This is technically the first patreon exclusive Fruits Basket episode. Aside from the 3 or 4 that hadn't gone live on YouTube yet I mean. It's unfortunate but still glad we can watch it here, hope it doesn't make the show any less appealing for you

Nick

I still want to fight Akito for this. And I know.. hurt people hurt people. . Blah blah It will do more harm than good... I know how it ends. But in this moment I want to fight a fictional character.

Lysieblu

I’m always amazed with Rin’s English VA’s performance this episode! Extremely well done and one of my favorites

Fabiola Macias

i haven’t rewatched fruits basket since i watched the finale and i love picking up all the things i missed with you!! and also there’s so many things that seem small right now that end up being main points later, just shows how great the writing of the story is :)

lineth pizarro

That’s so fucking cute.

Megan

Ah that's right at that time I did think it was odd that it was Hiro visiting of all people

Alex G

ok this will probably be my last comment but fun fact! Rin originally started dressing in her goth aesthetic as a kind of rebellion from the super frilly, proper clothes her parents dressed her in as a child. Also, before Haru started dressing the way he does, he dressed more in athletic wear like Kyo, but he wanted to dress like Rin so he started dressing the same as her. Haru is also the one who makes all their jewelry, and in the episode where Yuki visited Haru's room, you see he has a little tool area where he makes the jewelry!

Francesca White

Do you happen to remember what the channel you watched was? I am very intrigued...

arcana✦vox

omg they're one of my fav non canon ships! obviously i love Rin with Haru but i love imagining an alternate universe where Rin and Tohru get together lol

Francesca White

just wanna say isuzu x tohru is my favorite dynamic i love those girls so much

Crystalrose

Also sorry for always commenting like 10 things lol as you can tell I have a lot to say about this show 💀

Francesca White

Same I’m such a sucker for backstory episodes.

Megan

one thing i love about Rin's character is on the surface she fits this "seductress" category, she's curvy, wears revealing clothing, and tries to use her body to get what she wants from Shigure. and you realize wow, THAT is how Akito sees Rin, but that's not her at all. at heart she's this beautiful, kind soul, who's bravely trying to save the guy she loves. she's doing everything in her power and willing to sacrifice everything, and she's doing all this as she fights through trauma/ptsd.

Francesca White

I forgot how graphic Rin’s backstory was. It’s almost nauseating to watch. No child deserves what she had to go through. I love Haru’s speech to Rin’s parents, it’s unfortunate that they didn’t seem to even care about what he was saying. The fact that Hiro whitenesses Akito pushing her out the window adds a dimension to their relationship. If you remember, all the way back in the last episode of season 1, Hiro is the one who visited Rin in the Hospital. That’s why he worries so much about her treats her different then most other people.

Megan

Rin's story always makes me bawl!!😭😭😭

raesh

btw, there's this channel that i watched when this aired and one of the guys on it is a psychologist, and he basically went down the list of symptoms of PTSD and Rin matched like ALL of the, you can really tell with this series that the author did a lot of research for how to correctly portray mental health with people like Rin and Yuki, and with Kyo and Tohru as well, especially later down the l ine

Francesca White

Yeah one of the more painful episodes of Fruits Basket!

Eatchu

this is one of my favorite episodes 1. because i love RIn and 2. because i love pain apparently LMAO all my fav episodes are the painful ones

Francesca White

just something to keep in mind this episode, Akito says he hates women, and thinks of them as repulsive seductresses, especially Rin. this is just something you should keep in mind with him cuz it's something that goes unnoticed a lot but it's important to his character

Francesca White

Satsuki..Best Sohma mama!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰

raesh

Yes, this time a very special one I like to call *white wall 45*

Alex G

Something I just realized, you EASILY have the all time record for most unique video backrounds for a Youtube Reaction channel. This has got to be your, what....20th different backround now? Another one added to the lore. Also only 20 episodes left in the entire show...at least until the highly controversial OVA/Movie comes out kinda soon. I wonder if you'll decide to react to it once you've finished Fruits Basket, it might be kinda hard to watch.
