Aw, thank you very much! I love learning about culture and sharing what I know, especially when it comes to the shows and stories I like.

Onigiri

You really should, it's a good read with some more details :) And more Mogeta

Evalone

Onigiri, just want to say I appreciate your comments on the background cultural stuff and your comments here in general. Some of the context in this show would've gone way over my head honestly.

Kotryna

I know!!!! The Kakeru x unknown girlfriend storyline hit so hard!!!!😭

Stephanie

Yeah, this episode in particular is supposed to have the first hints of Kakeru's backstory being relevant to the plot (as per the manga). Hana mentions that she vaguely recalls seeing Kakeru a long time ago, and he was with Tohru. Tohru doesn't remember him at all, and this conversation is what caused Yuki to ask Kakeru why he was so interested about Tohru. Kakeru responds that it's not yet time for him to reveal that. I highly recommend the manga to those who haven't read it, the anime is great but the manga has even more depth and intensity.

Onigiri

Damn I didn't know about this...makes me wanna read the manga

benj

I'm still so mad they decided to cut Kakeru's story with Tohru from the series. It wasn't an essential part of it but I feel like it just open a road for Kakeru that's never resolved. It's resume as "Kakeru is interesting in Tohru because of Yuki" and it deserved better. Same with Machi and the Mogeta thingy. Feel like, since season 2 was very focused on Yuki's journey, they just erase everything else regarding his character in the late season 2 and season 3. It even affected Ayame, wich is a crime against our king.

Evalone

That's actually just a reflection of the real Japanese middle/high school experience - most kids in Japan do take field trips to Kyoto, assuming they're close enough to it that transportation doesn't take all day. Kyoto is considered the "cultural capital" of Japan, which means it's pretty much the #1 place to take students to teach them about history and culture. As for relationships blooming in Kyoto, that's probably also realistic, since it's often the first time students see each other outside of a classroom setting. Plus if you wanna confess, it'd be more "romantic" to do so in such a beautiful, scenic place. Which they probably learned from watching TV romance, so it comes full circle.

Onigiri

90% of the slice of life romance shows I have watched (which is a lot) either take place in Kyoto or most of the time have a class trip/vacation to Kyoto at some point during the show where big time important plot events always happen. Anime is so unoriginal sometimes I love it, there are certain tropes that just HAVE to be done in every show.

benj

Kyoto is a very old city and rich in culture and history due to its importance as the former capital of Japan, which makes it a popular setting for dramatic TV shows, especially murder mysteries. A lot of big historical assassinations and deaths have taken place in Kyoto, so there's a little bit of an underlying somber/ominous feel to the setting. London would probably be a good Western parallel.

Onigiri

Something from the manga that the anime leaves out is that there's actually a bit of history with Kakeru, his girlfriend, and Tohru!! None of it is spoilery but it does explain why Kakeru has a fixation with Tohru other than the fact that she's close to Yuki!

Brooklyn Doreen

The love, it's blooming! Totally makes my heart flutter the way they go about realizing their emotions. Very realistic in terms of my experience with first loves and expressing your feelings and vulnerability to the one you love. I also really love your discussion about how Kyo is not worthy of Tohru, yet. He definitely is showing signs of growing but he is not quite there.

Athena

GAHHHHHH THEY ARE SO CUTE I LOVE THEM TO PIECES also tohru making a cat figurine it makes me wanna cry its so fucking precious

Brimmy

The next episode is my second favorite fruits basket episode so I am so excited you are finally getting to it. I feel like you will have a lot of interesting insight to give and things to say. Looking forward to it.

What an exact explanation of Manabe’s importance in the show! I wish they had more of his side plot in the anime but I’m grateful we got to see him animated to begin with.

Mattie Grandstaff

Ok, everyone, Kakeru Manabe is my favorite character in FB, and the entire anime genre for that matter. Here's why. (long post and mini spoiler warning) He's already DONE. He's gone through his story arc of sucession and being born to his father's mistress, and it is over. He decided he was done with that life, and convinced his mother of the same thing. He has escaped the circumstances of his birth and is now self assured, confident, and a good person. Often in TV, anime, movies, there's a realized character, (think Uncle Iroh), but even then, we don't know the backstory prior to their onscreen entrance until much later. Such characters are often absolutely integral to the plot, having previous relationships with antagonists, knowing secrets about the plot, protagonist, or antagonist. I could go on. And while Kakeru is a vital part of Fruit Basket's storyline, he's not directly involved with the Somas apart from his relationship with Yuki. He doesn't know any other Somas except in passing at school, He doesn't know any of the plot secrets we've uncovered in these past episodes, He's just THERE, a fully realized self, happy, positive, confident, joking, playful, wonderful friend and person. He's done with his arc. He's basically done with his trauma. His backstory has been aired, and for the most part, there aren't any questions there. He's free to be who he is; a crazy, fun, inspiring person. Despite his chaotic exterior, Kakeru is a reliable person by all accounts. He's his school's student council vice president, he has a brimming social life, an after school job, and a girlfriend. His relationship with her is strong enough that he has absolutely no issue saying that he loves her to those around him. And what does he do with his realized self? He takes care of Machi, watching over her, dealing with her rampages, calmly, maturely, and swiftly. He embodies the 'introvert finds friends because extrovert adopts them' to a T, becoming extrordinarily good friends. He parents the student council, or school defense force, with team building, and provides levity to any situation that warrants it. He is an amazing friend to Yuki, anabashedly himself, playfully physically affectionate (the touch starved Yuki HAS to be grateful for this, I'm sure), noticeably distraught at the prospect of losing Yuki as a friend. He sees that Yuki cares for Tohru, and cheering his friend on, inquires as to their relationship, warns that Kyo may be getting close to her, and pretends to be interested himself to find what is important to Yuki. If Yuki were to pursue a romantic relationship with Tohru, he would have Kakeru's full support. He want the absolute best for Yuki, because he is such an impressive person and incredible friend, all without sacrificing himself.

Kyo had to deal with jealousy in this episode from two different species

You do not know how badly I needed that whole “past struggles feeling insurmountable during but you can still smile at your past self now” chat because I’m currently in the end of my worst semester grade wise in college. It’s been a struggle getting myself back up with problem solving to help my future self, but I know for a fact that I’ll be able to look back and smile. Thinking that way, imo, can really help the present self appreciate the moment a lot more diligently. Just the certainty in which Tohru tells Yuki that he will in fact make precious memories is something that has stuck with me since I was a kid. Even if a large portion of this show can feel quite silly, it’s the very crucial focus on the concepts of fighting doubt, stagnation, and the acceptance of changing your own destiny that gives this show a magical impression.

Mattie Grandstaff

And what the cat actually talks about..is something like..."how dare you flirt with another girl when I am here....I am going back to my parents" ...apparently kyo pissed off that cat...🤣🤣

raesh

When yuki hits kyo on the head...its actually a kakeru move that's what it's written on the side...'a Kakeru Hit' 'attack power 3 times' Its just a move that kakeru usually does that yuki copied cos kyo was being an idiot...lmao..

raesh

The signs!!!!

ArmdVctr

I get what you mean. Yuki is really doing great things

Alex G

Yes that’s why she was talking to Yuki about getting clay. She sculpted the cat herself which is really cute.

Megan

loved what you said about Yuki at the end, it all felt spot on! this season is why i consider Yuki not just the most well written character in Fruits Basket, but one of the most well written anime characters in general, his growth is just a great thing to watch, and he feels like the secondary protagonist to the series. like, Kyo is a main character, but Tohru and Yuki are PROTAGONISTS if that makes sense lol

Francesca White

i think the implication in the manga is that she bought the full set but it didn't come with a cat, so she made the cat herself :)

Francesca White

Yuki exposed by a class trip

Alex G

Erotica plays a very important role in this episode it seems

Alex G

Yuki is just not a morning person lol, it's funny cuz he has this perfect prince persona, but he wakes up late, can't cook, and if you look at his room it's a complete mess

Francesca White

Lol what is that description. I don't remember what happens in this episode so. At first you had my curiosity, now you have my attention.

benj

this is my favorite feel good episode of the show, well this and one other later in the season :D
