To me, Kakeru's initial role in the plot was to represent Yuki's growth by placing him with someone that resembles the two people the show thus far that Yuki is unable to get along with (with the exception of Akito for obvious reasons). He's extroverted and approachable like Kyo, and he's also extremely carefree and charismatic like Ayame. Kakeru is essentially Yuki's first big obstacle in learning how to express his emotions openly as well as the person who draws those emotions out of him in the first place. For better or for worst, Kakeru has no filter on his actions or words, likely as a response to his childhood and upbringing. This leads him being obnoxious, selfish or insensitive towards people. At the same time though, it also means that he's one of the few people within the school that isn't enamored with the Prince persona Yuki puts on and thus can penetrate the social bubble of emotional sterility around him, causing Yuki to change. And while he isn't the first person to do so, he's the first person that Yuki befriends all on his own, marking another step in Yuki's growth. He and Yuki make great friends because they both stand to learn from each other, and thus balance each other out. Kakeru's open expression of his opinions and emotions encourages Yuki to do the same, while Yuki curbs Kakeru's tendency to be rude or obnoxious through his incredible empathy. He does have his own story and growth, but sadly it was cut from the anime, so you're really only left with his role in Yuki and Machi's stories, which might be why you find it so difficult to understand him.

I'm very interested in your discussions and opinions on the student council group, because I can admit I have the hardest time understanding their characters and the narrative purpose they serve as Yuki's team. Particularly, I have difficulty understanding Kakeru. I don't quite comprehend why he acts the way he does, or why he's a good fit as Yuki's friend. People here seem to enjoy his character, but I don't quite get why. Not that I dislike him, but I seem unable to understand his appeal. Maybe there is a fundamental theme that I'm missing, or maybe I lack certain experiences that would give me the perspective to understand him. Regardless of what that may be, I look forward to future episodes and your opinions on Kakeru as he reappears in the show

@Brimmy By Original I mean Japanese, because thats the original and intended version.

benj

but....Eric Vale voiced Yuki in the original....

Brimmy

omg i'm so behind i started ep 14 but remembered i hadn't pulled up ep 2 of MHA so when i scrolled down i saw this and was like \wait this isn't liked D: \ I hate my procrastination @.@ i will never not love the yuki fan club XD their so silly I despise everyone on the student counsel cept Machi she's fine omg Micah Solusod voices Sakuragi?! He voices Best Jeanist! god his sub voice (Sakuragi's) was so annoying this is much better but it makes him sound older Bonding? sure but my god they are exhausting...like yeah it cute friendship but ughhhh he's annoying

Brimmy

Its gotten better yeah, I like it now as well it is SO much better than Kyo's which for me just gets worse and worse. There are still so many faults with the dub its just unfortuntely the inferior version, too many characters personalities are changed too much imo, thats how impactful and amazing the original performences are, for me one of the highlights of Fruits Basket literally was its voice acting in Japanese, and I watch a lot of anime most of the time I don't have that specific love for the VA's. Obvi this is just my personal take tho, voice acting is pretty subjective when it comes to liking it or not.

benj

I think he was apologizing to Kyo for bringing him and Tohru up to Yuki?

Nick

He has come into the role imo

Nick

I have literally nothing negative to say about Yuki's English voice now, I think his actor is nailing it

Nick

I tell you I cackled when Kyo transformed into charizard in the outro. Love it!

Andrea Rodríguez

Yun-Yun is as amazing of a nickname as Zuzu is. Inject Yuki student council scenes into my veins.

benj

Yuki’s nickname is actually ‘yun-yun’ but it is hard to hear the Y. I always call season 2 of fruits basket the season of Yuki, because this really is where he shines the brightest. So excited for you to see where the show takes him!

Kimberly Oblinger

I think Yuki views himself as an enemy partly because the things he needs to overcome are things he hasn’t shared with anyone else. I think in that situation, Yuki views overcoming his struggles as a battle with the darkest, most painful parts of himself rather than a healing process to become more whole. Also, this episode reminded me of the teachers words. “Try to become adults. No, just become people who take responsibility for their words and actions. Then again, that might be harder.”

Jerry Ferrell

1C has such a stick up his ass. but I was like that when I was about his age so who am I to judge.

Jacob Keyser

Lol yeah that's one of the things he missed cuz his version didn't have subtitles but it's such a funny moment

Francesca White

Also it didn't show on screen yuki changed kakeru's color from black to swamp brown....lmao!!

raesh

Kimi is an interesting and terrifying addition haha

Alex G

Yuki made a friend!! I feel like a proud momma!!😆😆😆

raesh

The writing of this show is good that you will know who are the end game pairings even before season 3 starts.

ArmdVctr

Enter one of my fav side characters... KIMI!! I love an instigator so any scene she's in, i'm always having a good time. Also i don't know if i've ever said this before but when i was younger i sort of disliked kakeru (for any manga readers that understand -yes.. i'm petty) but after coming back to this show for the reboot and seeing this episode, it made me really care for him. He is such a great friend to Yuki and they seem to really help each other grow, so that ending always tugs at my heart (yuki is such a good guy)🥺

Crystalrose

FACTS! Kakeru is one of my favorites in the whole show and he adds so much to the scenes with Yuki, all of there interactions are just pure gold.

benj

What version are your watching? You're missing the Japanese subtitles for the writing on the board which is pretty important for the episode. Anyway though Yuki and Kakeru have pretty much my fav relationship dynamic in the series, I just love every scene from here on out that they're together

Francesca White

This student council in episode reminds me a lot of trying to group projects in school. You try to get work done but everyone starts goofing off and arguing about unimportant things. You end up wasting a whole class period but at least it was fun.

Megan

Huh kinda weird the version you’re watching doesn’t have subtitles for the writing and signs.
