Another small trivia for my favourite opening theme - if you hadn't noticed already, the glasses falling over Mirio are Sir Nighteye's glasses :)

Muchymozzarella

LOLLLL This is the funniest thing I've ever read. It's not bad, not even by most standards. It just deviates slightly from the manga and the animation team is busy with the movie so it doesn't pop off as much as Season 4. But at worst it's pretty good.

Muchymozzarella

Sorry about that, just fixed it

Alex G

Sorry but why is episode 25 available and 24 isn't? (for the 1st tier patrons).

ODIS

I had to get the Patreon just for this episode reaction! It is so legendary, it’s like a 24 minute anime movie in terms of how nutty the visuals are and the storytelling is insane. PEAK FICTION

Sparky Sponge

Watching your reactions to this season has improved my opinion on it, I still do have issues and it isn''t near my favorite season. Gentle is great for sure, he's probably my favorite part of the arc along with this finale and Mirio. I have issues with the overhaul stuff, the concert and billboard ep.

Kamolak

I saw a comment on crunchyroll for this episode pointing out how Endeavor looks like an actual Phoenix in this episode as he's burning Hawk's feathers and making a flaming set of wings. And then this entire episode sort of symbolizes his rebirth as a hero from the ashes. Really awesome way of looking at it

Nick

I mean, Studio Bones always animates fire really really well. Perfect examples are Fullmetal Alchemist and every scene with Roy Mustang, as well as scenes from MP 100, and now Endeavor enters the Studio Bones fame in my books

Nick

Hands down one of the best episodes of MHA I've seen. The animation was probably also at its best here for the entire series thus far. It reminded me of Studio Bones best work when they are able to go "plus ultra" so to speak. This episode was animated and drawn with the intense ferocity I'd expect for a character like Endeavor as he carves his way to the top with a new start. Phenomenal episode, the animation reminded me a lot of Mob Psycho 100 which is also by studio bones, that's what I was referring to. This was some movie level quality for the entire episode, just awesome

Nick

Wow, I just got around to watching this episode, and man, the amount of comments on this one is the most in a long time! Really interesting to read what people think about this one. It will be interesting to see what you think of season 5.

jdthebud

I absolutely love this episode. And also loved your reaction for really understanding the nuances to different characters. A few things: - I watch the show in both dub and sub because I like both for different reasons but this is maybe the only episode (and possibly the All Might vs All for One fight) I absolutely think you should watch the sub. There are just so many subtle things that are lost in translation- one being that what Hawks actually says is “my back isn’t enough to make them feel safe - it has to be you” and also the Endeavor fan from the previous episode - his VA in it is great - This is the same music they play for Shoto during the licensing exam when he’s trying to say he feels nothing for his father anymore only to realize he can’t leave his past behind in a way that ties legacy so well into both his and Endeavors character arcs - And finally I think you nail how many emotions Endeavor must be feeling. I also think Erik from Blind Wave said it best when describing that Endeavor spent so long looking at All Mights back with no thought for his actions only to have the finish line painted over and needing to pivot on the spot and look at all those he hurt along the way and that’s something I think the show handles so well. Sorry for the longer post and I know it’s a little late but really can’t wait for you to watch season 5!

KTok

Endeavor is always a complicated character for me to talk about because of personal reasons but it's always cool to see him in action and fight. His quirk is really neat and I love how he uses it even though I'm not a big fan of him lol Anyway, Season 5 is coming up! Here we go baby! I'm actually not caught up with it yet so I better get to it. :)

Shark-ira

LMAO now this is what I call dramatic, I respect your opinion but humbly disagree, Season 5 has one of my favorite arcs in the entire show actually. I can't wait for Goodwin to watch it.

benj

I'd say let him watch and develop his own opinion, people like to say season 4 sucked too yet he seemed to enjoy it.

Obito

I believe that was Fat Gum in the pic at the bottom in the End Credits. The tip off is that he's eating Takoyaki which Fat Gum is always seen eating.

TrueAuraGuardian

Alright. As bad as it is, no way in hell is it the worst season of any shonen ever. You a manager at LIDS? Bc all I see is cap

Lord Buh Cheeks

Very intriguing

Alex G

Appreciation of the phoenix metaphor

Alex G

Well said. I think there's this constant struggle going on between complexity and functionality. Like, the world is just so complex and there are seemingly infinite levels of nuance you can break things down into, the amount of raw information is just staggering. But we're living beings with goals and don't have nearly the mental capacity for that. So things get boiled down into practical guidelines that shape our actions. This is vital for our survival but also carries incredible risks. Nuance and subtlety is largely where the magic happens, and when we're talking about people's lives we want to get it as right as we possibly can. Good people bad people, those are all just labels. To me that has less objective reality than say, a person's actions and thoughts in any given moment. I think this becomes more clear when we apply the lens we apply to ourselves to others, for we allow more nuance when it comes to our own thoughts and choices generally speaking. The silver / golden rule applies here I think, where I would like to be understood and forgiven as a complex, flawed human, and so it feels right for me to extend that same thought to others. Which doesn't mean we have to LIKE or FORGIVE everyone, but we can still approach people with more complexity and humanity.

Alex G

That's fine! Thanks for the comment :D I feel similarly about battle sequences. I definitely enjoy good action but most of the time I'm hoping it's a vehicle for character stuff. And that character stuff can be good in so many different forms, even just through dialogue. I like what you said about Endeavor's early episodes setting up dark undercurrents in hero society. The attempt to redeem, or move forward in a postive way with, a character who has done terrible things is an interesting choice. But I also think the "dark undercurrent" idea is something worth keeping and exploring further. I'll have to see where it goes as always

Alex G

Thanks for this!

Alex G

Yup! Just trying to decide when

Alex G

This is the perfect point to drop this series and start a new one. To say it goes downhill from here is an understatement. Season 5 is one of the worst seasons of any shonen anime ever produced. It'll be a waste of your time.

Norrin Radd

A phoenix metaphor.

Jason

The end credits is basically Deku seeing the previous OFA wielders and AFO putting it inside his little brother who then said to Deku,"So you're the ninth..."

Gog

Remember the family talk about endeavor for fruits basket o.o lol the paragraphs people are putting its amusing cuz there's people who are willing to see him get a 2nd chance and then there's others who are like \no absolutely not\ Ahh i was right! Pink Haired Endeavor Fanboy is voiced by Todd Haberkorn (he voiced Lin in FMAB) man i barely remember this episode but i do remember when i got to it in the manga i was wondering how the kids even knew he was in trouble, i literally missed the fact it was being televised XD ok now idk what to do, do i go in with u blind to Season 5? do i go binge it myself? do i go read the manga which i assume i'm still at a point where its further ahead than season 5? dflgnsdfjngksldfng so when i was deep into the MHA fandom and was in a MHA centered discord we were all screaming about the manga every week and when a specific thing happened that we had only guessed at oh dear god it was fucking amazing that we rewarded for being correct and i just...I'm so excited idk if it happens in Season 5 but i'm still excited for it to become a thing

Brimmy

Honestly don't have a lot to add, I feel like you said it all and said it well. Great Episode, great Season, the best one to date imo. It's like the perfect blend of all the things that make MHA so great. Better get used to controversy though, Endeavor and his arc (and by extension the whole Todoroki family drama, as I lovingly call it) will probably stay a point of contention. Personally, I think it's very complex and riveting to watch unfold, one of my favorite storylines in general. And Hawks and Endeavor have such a cool dynamic as well, all around great stuff! Huge props to Endeavor's voice actor here, I get chills every time. Looking forward to Season 5!

kingafreund

Some time ago, I don't even remember in what context and my recollection of the whole thing most likely isn't perfect, I listened to a podcast episode that really focused on this Good VS Bad Binary and how this concept does more harm than good. Because it is incredibly hard to accurately measure what makes a good vs a bad person. The example they gave was a man who killed one person and went to prison for that. Most would categorize him as a bad person (if a person at all, but thats another thing). For the next few decades, this man spend in prison, with great remorse for what he did and focused all of his time, energy and money to "make up" for the life he took. In the end he dies not of old age, but due to an injury he acquires when he protects a fellow inmate from an attack. Doing a lot of charity work AND dying while saving another ones life would normally lead to him being seen as a good, even great, person. But having done both, what is he now? Can the life he saved balance out the life he took? Can the life he saved plus all his good deeds? Can they, when the friends and familiy of the person he killed forgave him? If that doesn't outbalance that, what amount of Good does? No amount? Then even doing the most simple and tiny bad thing imaginable automatically makes you, for the rest of humankind's memory of you, a Bad Person. Flaggelating yourself for being a Bad Person, when you've done only the smallest of Bad Things is incredibly terrible for your mental health. The conclusion of this example is, that we shouldn't judge by going Good Person VS Bad Person. Every person is capable of doing good or bad ACTIONS, but that says nothing about their morality or anything like that. The man from the example therefore is A person, who has done a big bad thing, a big good thing, a multitude of medium good things and probably a shit ton of small good and bad things during his lifetime. Now, back to the "if a person at all": what sadly often happens when a very terrible crime comes to light, is, that people start referring to the person responsible as "monster". You even touched upon that a bit, when you mentioned that Endeavor was, at the beginning, introduced to us as a terrible "creature". Not a terrible person oder human being, but a creature. But dehumanizing people who did terrible crimes only means turning a blind eye on there being causes for such actions and behaviours that, if noticed soon enough and properly dealt with, could have been prevented (a german author working in criminology pointed out in one of his books, that there are quite a few pedophiles, who tried to get help from psychology professionals so that they wouldn't hurt actual children, but got turned away, so never learning how to properly deal with that) and/or tries to deny that in the end, theoretically, everyone is capable of doing something absolutely terrible. It tries to paint the picture that only monster kill or rape or torture and not... simple humans. Coming back to Endeavor: He is a person, who abused his family, isn't the most charismatic guy on the block, is rude and harsh and unpleasant. He is also a person that solved more "cases" than anyone else currently in the Top 10, who saved probably just as many lives as All Might, who tries to make up for the abuse of his family, who is willing to die protecting others. He is neither a Good or a Bad person; a monstrous villain or an infallible hero. Endeavor is a Human. As much as a fictional character can be.

Bells_Sparrow

Okay so this is my first comment on one of your posts despite me being a lurker for a while now! So I know that a lot of people really like this episode, but tbh I always found the character stuff in this show to be WAY more interesting than the fights so every time there are longer battles, I just end up wanting to keep listening to their internal monologues. It’s not that the fights are bad per-say, it’s just that I don’t find the choreography or power usages that interesting to look at most (not all) of the time. Endeavor is an interesting character and I feel like the way people discuss him can skew a little too into talking about him like he’s a real person that we have the authority to forgive. I also have some issues with his writing later on but that’s stuff that hasn’t even been animated yet so we’ll get there when we get there lol. Endeavor’s narrative purpose at the beginning is to illustrate that hero society has some dark undercurrents. We don’t see all of the horrible things that go on unnoticed within the society quite yet, but the fact that the no. 2 hero (at the time) was physically abusing his wife and youngest son and neglecting his other children, while the unaware public still revered him enough to get him that high ranking is appalling. It really helps set the groundwork for a lot of the other atrocities that get brought up later on. I think the idea of Endeavor’s redemption arc was an interesting choice by Hori to do because it’s such a divisive and sensitive topic. But if he accomplishes it in a good enough manner, then he is able to build and give more structure to his ongoing narrative of what it really means to be a hero. According to Hori, a hero is someone who will lend out a hand to someone who needs it. We keep seeing that phrase over and over again with so many people. Now I can’t get too into this part unfortunately, because I really don’t want to spoil anything that happens later on. But the narrative of what it means to be a hero gets built on more and more along with Endeavor’s arc and what it eventually will culminate to. I’m really excited to see what everyone is going to think of him in the upcoming season 6 and beyond. Now all of that to say that I don’t particularly like Endeavor lol. I’ve dealt with people like him before and it’s really difficult for me to actually be invested in him getting a happy ending bc of all the shit he’s done. I also don’t really like the idea of us as viewers deciding to forgive him or not bc it feels like we’re overstepping a boundary somehow. Idk abuse is such a real thing that telling others how to deal with it, even in fictional form seems wrong somehow. It’s like when people call Shigaraki crusty or Dabi a burnt chicken nugget or whatever. Like real people actually have skin issues like that and while others might not be directing those comments towards real people, it still affects those in the fandom who have those issues and see what’s said. Either way I can’t wait til you get to the final arc of season 5 bc it’s my personal favorite for what’s been animated so far! Thank you so much for doing what you do and I’m very excited to hear what you have to say! Also I’m sorry about the literal essay that I wrote lol.

Winnie

So since you said you're probably gonna do a poll for when to watch the 2nd movie, there are 3 possible options: 1) After season 4 2) After the first arc of season 5 3) After season 5 I personally suggest the second option just because most (and the most important) of the spoilers in the movie are not spoilers anymore after watching the first arc of s5, plus the 3rd movie recently came out as well so if you'd watch that one, that's the one to watch after you've finished s5.

Jenny bete

will you be reacting to the 2nd movie as well?

AryTheDog

So I got my first copyright strike last night for Fruits Basket. I always knew the day would come but it was still a blow and made me realize just how vulnerable I am. There's a lot I need to think about. An obstacle for a long time has been time. But I can't let that continue to be a problem. I think I need to start branching out and doing other things just to hedge myself. And a podcast or some kind of just open form discussion thing that isn't reliant on copyrighted material is very high on the list of things I would really enjoy :)

Alex G

Have you ever thought about doing podcasts? i would hear you ranting about anything on spotify

DrakeonLex

So excited for you to watch season 5

Jacob Keyser

They look so alike as well which is really funny, I feel like half the reactions I have seen of this episode have the joke ‘hey it’s Natsu’

DVK

The fact that Endeavor's quirk has an overheating side-effect kind of reminds me of Kaminari. Gives me a lot of hope for his potential

Deiondre0

One of my favorite parts of this episode is the focus on the Todoroki siblings and how they are experiencing their feelings about Endeavor, Season 5 gets into this more and its one of my favorite parts of season 5

Emma Root

We made it Gang, We finally made it. This episode is hella lit, no pun intended.

benj

The revelation that overheating is a big problem for endeavor and is the reason for him trying so hard to blend his and his wife’s quirks together makes it so much more interesting than when we thought he just tried to make a super powered warrior to dethrone all might. It’s not just him wanting to overcompensate for not being able to surpass all might, there’s this glaring weakness in his ability that holds him back and he wanted to somehow overcome

Kollie123

I definitely wish the back thing had made it into the dub, but that’s been a thing around endeavors character since season 3 that they didn’t use, so eh.

Kollie123

Fun Easter Egg!!For those watching the Dub the Pink Hair guy is Dubed by the Voice Actor who Does Natsu from Fairy Tale who also does Fire based attacks :P!

John Carrizales

That did give me pause this episode. It seemed odd that he's being trained by men in suits

Alex G

end credit scene: shows All Might's predecessor for One For All that we've already met - Alex: "some unfamiliar faces :D" joking aside though this has been a great season of reactions!

Francesca White

I gotta say this is my favorite episode in the series so far (followed closely by the concert episode). I also don't have an issue with the dub of this series but the sub of this episode is spectacular. I also prefer what Hawks said in the sub after giving Endeavor his last feathers. He says 'My back isn't enough to let them feel safe', which I think is really spot on. Most watchers at this point were probably wondering why Hawks is #2 and thinking he would be a better #1 than Endeavor -- especially after seeing him interact with citizens before the Nomu attacked but people need a 'symbol'.

Darby

Super glad your copy was the Blu-ray version instead of the original broadcast. A lot of the animation was hard to appreciate with all the screen dimming.

AstroSeedP

Ah I can see it now :)

Alex G

This was episode 88

Rose Rivers

Hopefully Season 5 before the movie since the movie has spoilers for Season 5

Jo

I'LL GO PLUS ULTRA! cheesy but I still love it. Sub > Dub any day tho ;)

Skyler Anderson

Woooo! Season 4 completed. Are you watching the movie before Season 5 or are we just diving straight into Season 5? Also this fight overall is one of my favorites cause it's just great quality and tense the entire way through!

Skyler Anderson

One thing cool about Hawks is how young he is. He is only 7 yearish older than the main cast. Being a kind of in-between generation he probably grew up watching Almight and Enderver take the lead stage.

Sage

The picture that you couldn't place was of Fat Gum.

themightyabe

ACK. I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE THAT. THANKS, OBAMA.

Kelsey Roberts

In the ending, notice how Hawks is a little kid when he’s training when most, if not all heroes in training start in high school, and the people training him are all wearing suits. Just letting you know to keep that in mind.

Jabez Katsak

Just because I don't think you caught it, but Midoriya now has the poster from Nighteye as seen in the outro.

Axander Curvin-Drietz

Lol my feelings exactly!

Anthony Dorado

THE DAY HAS COME.

Zanarkand

This episode cements Endeavor's absolute badassery. I had chills watching this for the first time and of course, me being the empath I am, I sobbed lol I think we all felt the absolute relief of the crowd after Endeavor came out victorious. The way Todoroki and All Might collapsed, how the boy who told him off ended up reigniting the hope among the crowd, and showing his family worrying for him. It is such an amazing season finale honestly. You're catching up and I'm excited!

Athena

also i'd like to add that if Endeavor was still doing this, abusing his family, but he was also the #1 hero and saving a bunch of lives, i'd still consider him a horrible person. you said in your discussion that a lot of moral character comes from your proficiency, but i don't think that's true. it doesn't matter how amazing you are at something if you abuse those around you, or even just treat people like crap lol

Francesca White

I believe the bottom photo at 27:25 is fat gum maybe?

SirLagginton

the thing is, i can forgive over the top villains in shows that do crazy stuff because it feels sperated from reality, but i can never forgive Endeavor, because what he did was so real, so vile, he beat and abused his wife and kids, to the point where the wife had such psychological damage that she's been in a mental hospital for years. i thing anyone can change, anyone can reform, but that doesn't mean i have to like/forgive them lol

Francesca White

Some have compared them like this: All Might is the Symbol of Peace, and Endeavor is the Flame of Hope. He is the burn that will hold humanity alight until the next generation is ready. Edit: the only photo you really missed was Young Thicc Muscled Gum eating some yums with his classmates.

Kelsey Roberts

That part where Hawks says "My wings aren't strong enough, it's gotta be you" and then it cuts to a shot of Endeavor and all the flames around him gives me chills every time. One of my favorite scenes in the show, I think.

Alacor

I think the reason I prefer Endeavor to All Might is because All might's quirk made him powerful whilst Endeavor made his quirk powerful.

SirLagginton

Adore the imagery of All Might seperated from everyone by the massive gorge, and Endeavor trying to build his way across with sticks and rocks - a truly futile endeavour (hehe pun) but he's the only one REALLY TRYING. Also, that Aizawa picture in the outro hides some foreshadowing that is pretty much impossible to realise unless you know what it is haha

Jo

The Plus Ultra in dub is... sad, just sad, but great episode

Carlos Salazar

This episode is a masterpiece! Incredibly well paced and the payoff is incredible.

Alacor

And to think, this is only the beginning of one of the best character arcs/storylines of the entire MHA story…

Matthew Richson

No lie, this is probably my favourite episode in the series and made me truly decide who my number 1 hero is.
