No Akito is the rice ball.

ArmdVctr

Wait so the zodiacs are the fruit and Tohru is the rice ball ?

Samy EN

Ha ha! I finally made it over here from YouTube as promised! It's been so long I forgot about the Zodiac War! So happy to be able to watch your reactions to this series again!

KuroNekoMataXIII

Hahaha β€œthe worst Akito has done” hahaha that’s funny

Stephanie

The God of the Zodiac, who stands above all the rest. ....Remembered the show's title.

ArmdVctr

Yes I saw that too. Really shows Tohru's character.

jdthebud

I just re-read my spam spazz for Season 3 (not one for season 2 probably because i felt like no one wanted to see me yelling about anime) and i'm sure in the later eps of S2 I was also like \GIVE ME ANSWERS OMG\ XD I'm so excited for all the reveals coming later

Brimmy

@Nick 😎 I knew that would fool any first timers who read it. Lmao I would never spoil anything, I find it funny you were silently angry at me though for good reason as well I would be so mad at someone if they spoiled a plot point like that for me.

benj

@benj I was mad because I thought you had spoiled me but it turns out it was a big brain misdirect

Nick

@benj You also totally misdirected me, like 10+ episodes ago you said "if I were watching this for the first time right now, I would guess akito is the horse or snake" so once akito wasn't the snake, I went on thinking he HAD to be the horse for the rest of season 1 and several episodes of season 2 lmao. You got me

Nick

If we go by origins, the zodiac story is Chinese - but the folklore still varies in regards to who the "god" is. Some say it was the Jade Emperor (the supreme god of gods, or at least a high-ranking one, depending on who you ask), and some say it was the Buddha. As for how many gods there are in China... though it again depends on who you ask; any human, animal, plant, or object could technically ascend to godhood if they try hard enough. Might take several thousand years and a lot of luck though. Either way, since most Chinese and Japanese religions have multiple gods, chances are good that Akito is just one of many. I feel like the fact that Akito and the zodiac are isolated to just one clan in Japan and don't really control anything else implies that Akito is just one of multiple gods and only has a specific domain he rules over. Though, since the Sohmas seem to be pretty rich and powerful, he may well be the Jade Emperor, god of all gods. Or as Taoism would call him, the Most Honorable Great Deity the Jade King in the Golden Tower of the Clear Heaven (ζ˜Šε€©ι‡‘ι˜™θ‡³ε°ŠηŽ‰ηš‡ε€§εΈ).

I do think that this is leading to a confrontation between Tohru and Akito where Tohru only can win if she does so in her Tohru way. And I think that will have to come from seeing him as someone worth caring about, as difficult as that is.

Alex G

One thing I love about that scene is how clearly terrified and confused Momiji is at having to suddenly stand up to Akito. But he does it, and that left me feeling like his strength is just on another level. And then it's also endearing when he breaks down afterwards, because of course that was confusing and terrifying and all sorts of terrible. It's just great on so many levels.

Alex G

I'm curious if there is only the one God Akito or if it's gods in the Greek or I guess Japanese (?) sense where there are a handful of mythical beings

Alex G

Aaaaaaand now I've watched three episodes ahead. Season 2 is phenomenal, these next few episodes are gonna be good.

Nick

Yeah it was a total shock to me when I watched it first watch through, I didn't even consider the idea really of one of the "human" characters we have known so far being the "God" in this particular Zodiac story. It opens up so many avenues of thought with Akito and his actions up to know.

benj

In that case, Akito reminds me of Envy from FMAB. Spoilers for FMAB below: Basically forced to live an existence filled with jealousy, hatred and more. It's literally his (Akito's) nature. If what you said is true and Akito is also bound by the same curse

Nick

Kyo to Tohru parallel this episode: Tohru wants to protect the Somas even if she gets punished or hurt for it. This reminded me of when Kyo said he would take Akito's punishment and be quiet if it meant Tohru wouldn't be punished or have a bad name, essentially. There are probably numerous zodiac members that share this outlook but can't act on it because of Akito

Nick

you called it awhile back. I didn't notice that on my first watch through

Jacob Keyser

That moment when you meet God and hes Satan lol

Rachel Keys

If you noticed Tohru empathy went overdrive when she mentioned that Akito is bonded just like the rest. Despite the abuse she just received she was able to realize that Akito is also negatively affected.

ArmdVctr

Yeah, Momiji really is the strongest out of all of the zodiac members, it's wild. I feel like episode order is also very important, because after just watching ep 9, it's very easy to draw the connection between Kyo and Momiji, and about how Momiji has really grown well and nurtured his relationship to himself, to others, and to hope itself as a concept. I feel like Momiji also went through a thing with watching his mother go from suicidal to seemingly well adjusted after being "relieved of the burden of him;". And he really seems to have fought back against internalizing that as all his fault and just drowning in despair and anger. He actively looks towards hope and engages with other people and connects to other people in a way that we haven't seen any of the other Sohmas do. I think that it's because of that connection he forces himself to have constantly with the outside world that he is able to stand up to Akito to protect Tohru, something which no other Zodiac member could do. He legitimately does seem to be farthest on the path of liberating himself and being happy, and yet we still hear him in this episode talking about how he feels guilty and selfish for loving Tohru. It's really sad that the person among them furthest along the healing path is still feeling those emotions to such a degree, and it really speaks to the pain the others are feeling. I also fucking adore this entire arc, but honestly? The quality of the rest of this season doesn't decline, it just shifts. I am very excited for the rest of this season's reactions!!! Love your videos :)

Kohl

What does it mean now that Akito is literally God and Tohru has been long established as literally Jesus, God’s son? What’s the truth? What to believe?

benj

Btw the interactions b/t Shigure, Akito, and Kureno are so deeply loaded with things yet to be revealed. These scenes will be appreciated 100x more on rewatches.

Ietseatapples

Its purposefully written in a way to mislead the audience. Its one of the many things in Fruits Basket written to be discovered on rewatches.

Ietseatapples

Yes yes yes and yes. Having seen Re Zero, yes. Furthermore, I have yes to say. And finally, yes. In all seriousness, it's a fantastic show and part of the greatness of it is the protagonist's growth. Edit: Not to mention it has one of the best dubs I've ever heard. Although, the original voice actor of the protagonist won awards for his performance and if you've seen the show, you know why lol

Nick

Yes!! God has shown himself....its time for war!!!

raesh

Randomly curious, but does anyone else think Re:Zero would be a great series for Goodwin? I think it’s filled with some great opinions on escapism and self confidence, while also being similar to AoT in the way that it’s kinda a meta commentary on its audience and Isekai in general

Aaron Ong

:)

Sweetbun

Another amazing episode and yes - the Zodiac War has indeed began haha. Very good description of Momiji and how he comes across - which is another reason why Akito reacted that way- the whole confrontation outside the vacation home was the highlight of the episode and a turning point for the series… S2 is probably my favourite but every episode is pretty much is stellar from now on

Paco_Stil

Yuki kind of implied this episode why he thinks Rin is there, but obviously he might be wrong.

Francesca White

The Zodiac War has begun! Because of your insight about Momiji I now have a better hold something else.

Lysieblu

Btw this is super easily missed, but when Akito gets super mad and says "that woman, that woman" he's talking about Ren, who he was just told was making trouble at the estate. I think it's a bit more clear in Japanese but I'm not sure. So Akito essentially got mad about this Ren woman and went to take it out on Tohru

Francesca White

God confirmation lol!!! Finally.. yes you were right in your assumptions and like you mentioned (and Tohru mentioned in the episode).. Akito just has this power over them because he is this "god" from the zodiac story. They can act independently but any word from him affects them really deeply.. which is why their mental states are very twisted and warped. In the first season it was sometimes hard to wrap your mind around the idea that all these people have very twisted views of themselves, their self worth, and their impact on others and we can see now that it's because Akito and his influence on them.

Crystalrose

Man what a good episode! And amazing arc!! Also it's inane how much foreshadowing is packed into these last few episodes, honestly rewatching the show knowing the ending makes this arc all the more enjoyable

Francesca White

The moment Akito was revealed as the God of the zodiac members I got CHILLS. They set that moment up perfectly, with so much tension. Also this episode confirms that Momji is best boy.
