I rewatched this episode just cause I was bored and listening to your whole thing about what you will be today as opposed on being stuck on the achievements you've made in the past is just incredibly telling to me that you would absolutely LOVE Haikyuu. Just want to throw that recommendation out there for maybe a new series once another one is over

Skyler Anderson

I've always felt like I was in the minority thinking this arc was just as good as previous ones; adjusting for how short it is, obviously. I know the festival's going on, but almost everyone seemed to find Gentle and La Brava to be - at best - a fun distraction from the A plot. Granted, I've always thought that villains, just in general, were the more interesting group to see develop in most stories, so maybe that's part of it. MHA also doesn't do a... fantastic job of highlighting how messed up it is that someone like Aiba could be born with a quirk that encourages hyper-fixation and romantic infatuation, but neither the school nor society in general has any framework for helping people work through those feelings. This is obviously something MHA is interested in (since we're meant to relate to and empathize with Aiba in that flashback scene), yet I still feel it's brought up and dropped abruptly. "Yeah, yeah. Hero society has no social programs for helping people deal with quirks that essentially cause neurodivergence, sure sure sure. ANYWAY, Gentle and La Brava are still bad for being villains and also the SCHOOL FESTIVAL'S HERE ERI SMILED YAY!" Like???

Derrick C. Shields

It accomplishes a lot in a short amount of time; doing both villain and hero development in such a way that they both rebound off and affect each other. It's very cool. When I read this in the manga, I found the slow reveal of Gentle's motivations and the themes surrounding him and La Brava just as affecting as the best parts of the Overhaul arc. So, I was rather surprised to find from reactions that more than a few people found this to be a comedic fill after Overhaul and before the next "real" arc, even with episodes like this practically shouting "THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MOMENT FOR DEKU'S HERO DEVELOPMENT!"

Derrick C. Shields

I actually love the Gentle arc because he is almost a reflection of what Deku could have become if he was has never acknowledged by All Might. Gentle had thrown away all logic in his pursuit of notoriety but when he received what he really wanted (acknowledgement from someone he respected) from Deku, his motivations change rapidly. I dunno, this arc is underrated IMO.

Tyler Owens

i wish Deku could know Gentle’s backstory, it’s so tragic.

Richard Lucas

1 day closer to 25.

Zanarkand

Yeah, I do wish they were a bit closer in age though, he's like 10 years older than her, and while I'm not saying that's illegal or anything, it does make me feel weird lol, especially considering I'm the same age as her and I know I'm definitely not mature enough to be with a 32 year old. That's just a nitpick though of course, I'm just glad she's not a minor lmao

Francesca White

I just want to say this for anyone confused, by the time Gentle and La Brava are together, they are both adults. It's implied that she spent years being depressed.

Tyler Seder

Yup, as expected you made me appreciate Gentle a lot more. Tks as always :) this arc is do much fun, I love slice of life in the middle of my Shonen.

Raysa Fonseca

Can’t wait to cry next episode

Brendin Ivey

Yeah, most miss that, but its a great moment.

Oh my God. I just realized the cutest thing. Gentle doesn't have dark circles under his eyes. He used makeup to match La Brava's. The thing she was most insecure about, he accepted and adopted. As much as I like the hype battles between Deku and other villains, there's something very refreshing about these guys. They're not terrible people at all. It reminds me of the mugger that Iroh talked to in Tales of Ba Sing Se. Misguided people that are naturally good hearted.

themightyabe

Wow, I honestly didn't expect you to relate to Gentle so much, but the result was some very insightful commentary. Since I don't really know much about the whole Yaptube deal it was very interesting. If I did a Villain Ranking, Gentle probably wouldn't even make the list (coz he's filed as antagonist in my head, so I'd probably just forget to include him), but I think he works very well for this arc. He's an other one of those cases, at first just entertaining, and then bam, backstory hits and their hidden depths really elevate the whole thing in retrospect. I'm still hoping we'll see them again some time.

kingafreund

Monoma's such a little shit XD he's less annoying in the sub from what i remember but ughh he's a good boi in his own way Gentle is obnoxious and annoying till his backstory is shown and its like \ah well then i feel this so hard\ he had a shitty hard life who am i to continue to shit on someone whose trying so desperately to make it better See? like i said character development for Deku he learned things :3

Brimmy

A detail not a lot of people catch but I personally ADORE: Gentle notices La Brava being self conscious about the dark circles around her eyes, a result of extreme fatigue, and chooses to draw circles around his own eyes to show he accepts her wholly and make her feel better as they would match.

Jo

This episode shows a lot of why there are some restriction in quirk use. It also highlights a factor that many do not realize, people are influenced by their quirk. They really try to show how much La Brava is very co-dependent emotionally here because of the nature of her quirk. She basically has to love someone or at least satisfy this need for loving someone because it's the nature of her quirk. It shows how badly a quirk can ruin someone life if they are not taken into account when looking at someone's behavior. A very subtle thing, but very important in the understanding of this world.

Gog

This uploading time was perfect for me hahah usually you upload at 3 am in my timezone. Anyway, this arc has been awesome, though I can't believe we are almost at season 5, damn

Jenny bete

Its extremely fortunate that La Brava grew attached to a small-time criminal like Gentle. A quirk like hers could be extremely dangerous if she found hope in a place like... the League of Villains (specifically Shigaraki)

Deiondre0

I love Gentle Criminal and La Brava so much. Their backstories and the ending of this fight make me cry every time. They might be villains and most definitely have broken countless of laws. But they also are both people who fell through the cracks of society and who found some kind of solace with each other. And Izuku understands, in this fight, what Best Jeanist once said to Bakugo: "Heroes and villains are two sides of the same coin..."

Bells_Sparrow

That's an interesting insight about him being caught in the middle and not being able to be a hero or a villain sufficiently. I feel like there's a lot to unpack still with Gentle. For example the lack of natural talent thing sort of exudes from his character, highlighted in this episode but also perhaps alluded to by the fact that he initially struggled to upload videos...What are you supposed to do with that kind of obstacle to natural talent?

Alex G

Yeah I'm always tempted to go down the line of thought that's something like... "just let them use their powers!" But this is a pretty good example of what happens when good intentions aren't enough

Alex G

Her backstory packs a punch despite being short. That kind of thing cuts right to the core... to feel like someone you like finds you disgusting. I'm still reeling from it a little bit

Alex G

Gentle wants to be remembered by people, not necessarily to find self worth. I guess that’s a thin line, but there is kind of a difference. Even people who were hated on the internet will still be remembered throughout the entire generation of people who were around at the time. For example, Rebecca Black and her lampooned ‘Friday’ song. Nobody liked it and she got constant criticism for it, but people still vividly remember her name and song. The sad thing is (or maybe good thing, for Gentle to get a new start) Gentle was never going to have the heart to commit a crime big enough that would have his name in history books for his infamy. It kinda sucks, but humans are more interested the more twisted something is. But Gentle is too much a hero at heart to garner interest, and yet he’s not talented enough to become an actual hero. Hopefully he’s strong enough to start over and make a new try once he gets out of jail, because he has the potential to be a great person.

Fizzle

Gentle is a good example of the reverse of what the boys went through with stain in season 2 the importance of proper training and licensing. It went well for the boys in the alley at the end of the day, but that doesn’t mean every untrained person will be as successful at trying to help someone I also like how the story acknowledges gentle is not dekus physically toughest fight, muscular and overhaul were much stronger opponents, shows you don’t always need to raise the stakes with raw power

Kollie123

God idk why but when rewatching La Brava's backstory I literally started crying a little bit. They're such normal people with real world problems relatable to today's reality and I can relate a lot to La Brava as someone who was a bit of an outcast in High School and tons of crushes who didn't have reciprocating feelings towards me. It's sad that their arc is kinda super short, I think it adds so much to this arc overall and they're some of my favorite villains.

Skyler Anderson

This fight and conversation with Gentle had an impact on how Izuku viewed villains. Said impact won’t become apparent until a later storyline however.

"A link to the past." We all live in the shadow of what we've done before. That is what haunts me the most.

Sorry that this came so late! Things really got away from me this week. I will announce this in a post too but no Fruits Basket today, though I intend to finish all scheduled MHA and FB videos this week (delayed as they might be). Apologies for the confusion!
