Very controversial! XD

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

You missed a whole ass controversy about this end credit scene

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Yeah I agree. I know exactly what you're talking about with MGS4. The lore behind them is sort of tedious right after the battle.

Alex G

His whole story felt tragic. That was my feeling by the end of this episode, which I guess is not surprising. And I think you're right. Compassion probably had a lot to do with it. It's a huge part of the episode.

Alex G

Lol it's there by request. I introduced it in the monthly Q&A :D

Alex G

It's a Persona tarot shirt, yeah :) But my favorite game is Persona 3, and the Sun Arcana has special significance to me in that game.

Alex G

Thanks! Just watched it. While I was watching I was thinking it's interesting that he is a control freak when it comes to daily life (cleaning, etc.), but somewhat freer and more capable of letting go when it comes to matters of life and death.

Alex G

I don't think Kenny was criticizing, necessarily. It was just his revelation about how people exist. He valued power more than any other thing, while others valued faith, friends, dreams, and so on. I don't think he thought he was above all that, but rather, in his last moments, he realized that the thing he despised himself for - being a slave to something, anything; in his case, power - is something everyone needs to live on in this messed up world. Even Uri couldn't escape that fact, despite having what Kenny thought was an omnipotent, compassion-lending power. I think that's why Kenny decided to not turn into a titan, because he discovered his own dream was folly (since he wasn't royal blood) and even if it HAD succeeded, he still would have "been a slave to something". So, like Kenny said previously: "go on living just for the sake of drawing breath? Doesn't sound like no kind of living to me."

It seems like a trend in modern anime to introduce a villain but not explain their motivations or backstory until moments before they're dead. This happened 2 or 3 times in Demon Hunter, and it happened with every BB corps member in Metal Gear Solid 4 (Not quite anime, but close enough). It's kind of annoying, IMO. I would prefer to know the stakes for the villain before they stop mattering.

Race Jenkins

I think you should watch the after credit scene. It's good for building up hype as well as good reaction material . I personally like how it was combined with the ending song as well

War2244

Rewatching Kenny's backstory and eventual death just left a feeling of emptiness. He was treated by others as trash and even thought himself worse than trash. He wanted power to be better, and to be able to understand the views and compassion of the one friend he had. Also rewatching this, what Uri said caught my attention when bringing up the fight he had with Kenny. Uri asked what was it that stopped them from fighting and becoming friends? They never said, but it seemed like Uri's self sacrifice to bow down after being attacked, and his compassion towards Kenny and the Ackerman clan is what changed the situation. I just think it's interesting that Kenny (with all his self loathing) wanted to know what having that compassion was like, when he does show some compassion towards Levi.

BubbleTea

Everything up until season 3 part 2 feels like build up watching it again, we do get some answers but from now on it's twists and turns everywhere.

iaani

end credit scene to watch or not to watch that is the question honestly i never paused when i first first watched it i was just like "?!?!?!?!?!" and then waited the...what year or so for the rest XD it never came to mind that u would pause to see what was going on XD

Brimmy

the end credit scene... isn't really needed. it was put in as a way to give the people a little teaser as whats to come since there was a large gap between seasons, but since you'll be able to watch the back to back it wont really matter. if you do choose to watch it, try to not fixate on that scene and just go with the flow

juice box!

I'm the type to hate spoilers... though sometimes I indulge and choose to spoil myself. I'd rather choose to spoil myself than have someone else surprise it for me. Personally, I didn't even know about the end credit scene till after the fact, but I was glad I didn't watch it cause I felt more impact to future events. So to watch or not to watch, I'm good with whichever as long as it's what you choose to do.

BubbleTea

Did I miss some part of the Arc? Why is there a potato in the background? ^^

Alice 1510

This show just really loves to build up a character right as they're about to die, huh?

Aidan Pullen

anyways back to more important things you should watch the 3x12 end credit scene through a piece of 1 ply toilet paper

Lulu

It really wasn't as big a deal as it's now been made out to be- and I'm not going to act like I'm not also at fault for that myself haha In fact, arguing about it at all has been counterintuitive against the standpoint of not watching because now we've all drawn so much attention and importance to it that it's definitely going to influence the weight of it in his mind even if he tries not too. That's about the only thing keeping me leaning towards not watching, but him using Levi's philosophy was a great way of looking at it. There's no right or wrong, just two separate routes that will lead in different directions and you just choose which one you think you'd prefer

Alex Begley

WAIT IS THAT A PERSONA 4 SHIRT.....YOU'RE A PERSONA FAN DLFKJSLDFKJ i wish i could hear your takes on the persona series ahhhh

Cassia

this is my favorite episode. i just find kenny's motivations so fascinating. this whole time we assume he's just a power hungry maniac (for good reason) when really his dream is to just to eat the founding titan to find peace and maybe see his friend again.

Lulu

Agree with this 100 percent, next seasons OP shouldn't be watched until like ep 19. However when I watched it didnt take away from the S3P2 experience for me really so up to you

Amit

hahaha i cant wait until you get to part 2 solely because half the comments wont be about the end credits scene anymore mine included lol

Amit

"It can't get any worse right?" STOP JINXING IT FOR YOURSELF also I think you shouldn't watch the end credits scene but it's not the biggest deal if you do. We all watched it, some of us analyzed it frame by frame and that on its own still doesn't emotionally prepare you for the full extent of what Season 3 Part 2 is going to unleash upon you. It's just a nice teaser without any context. It should be fine. Where I do have a stronger opinion is the OP. I think you should avoid watching it until a certain episode. I can't remember which one but I'm sure the other fans will mention it in a comment. Again if you do I guess it's not a big deal for the same reasons I listed for the post credits scene. I just think it'll help your reactions a bit if you're not expecting stuff.

KJ Gaona

i mentioned on an older video there was a video i watched that really helped me understand levi’s character, but there were spoilers in it. you’ve gotten past the spoilers now, so here it is! it’s a very good video i think. (she makes a mistake in this video calling kenny levi’s father. kenny is not levi’s father so don’t think that’s like a weird plot twist lol) https://youtu.be/w_CqTpYVLIE

Keegan Brakhage

like you said the end credit for season 3 pt1 was put there for reason and was intended to be watched

Majestic Turtle

Update: Just some small thing to note Levi chuckled for a split second after Historia punched him, and he even cracked a smile when he said thank you. So the Kenny stuff definitely got through to him, you were absolutely right. Plus it's nice to see that from him I will say that I didn't originally love this episode as much as some others but I really undervalued the writing here when I first watched it. It's great stuff. Can't wait for you to get into season 4, I know I'm like a broken record with that but still. Season 4 has some very interesting questions it raises Edit: Also, I'm nearing 500 patreon comments, holy crap Edit edit: I'm currently at 511 comments here lol

Nick

This is my first time watching too so idk if this counts as spoilers but I think I know why they said the coordinate would come to them I think at the end they're at Erin'a house, where he's trying to get to to open the basement

Jupiterninja

Not only would I suggest watching the end credit scene coming up, I would also suggest watching the opening theme of the next part.

themightyabe

Thanks! I can't get enough of Levi lol. He's been the biggest surprise for me from introduction to now

Alex G

I will try!

Alex G

Lol oh yeah! I also get now why people were relieved when the show switched from calling her Christa to Historia

Alex G

I think you’ve hit the money when you were talking about levi and how his philosophy is mores based on the foundation of faith rather than power ,and without spoiling the rest i say that with hindsight of episodes to come (edited ): keep up the great analysis love to see more of your videos always entertaining and educational

C Cuenca

That is something very interesting about AOT that I've felt throughout: In many ways a lot of the story is told backwards. Sometimes that works well (to build mystery, for twists, etc) and sometimes it removes some of the weight of events until a future rewatch. In this case I enjoyed Kenny's backstory but I think it might have added something to have gotten it earlier.

Alex G

Okay.......for the episode 12 post-credit scene, I think I now lean to you watching it ONLY if you don't pause and analyze but rather let it play and pick up whatever you can from it. Or even better, don't try much to look into it at all and just let it truly tease you. I think it's a nice jolt to get you excited for what's to come. This next part coming up is truly unreal story-telling and I think is a rival for top 2 arcs of the entire story including the manga. And, like I said in a comment awhile ago, Episode 16, 17 and 18 are presented as a trilogy/trio and I think are enjoyed best back to back from your own viewing experience. I dont know if you would, but a triple upload would be a very nice treat for the 1000 patreons since you originally promised double AOT upload ;P. Up to you though obviously but at the very minimum I would highly suggest you watch those 3 episodes back to back.

Christian Medeiros

Queen Historia is such a cool character. To go from Christa, who was nice but definitely a bottom tier character in my mind, to Queen of the Walls and an absolute badass with such a tragic backstory is just amazing writing. Also now you can understand why we were commenting things like "Wow, I love Christa! What an absolute queen!" and so on lol

ComicalSkate

I felt exactly the same first watch through, really can't believe our beloved goddess Christa is now QUEEN Historia. Never saw it coming, the shot of her saluting and standing on the platform with the music swelling gets me every time. Her development is amazing and the punching Levi scene is just pure fan service and we all love it. Those sweet interactions that just feel good between characters are rare to come by in this show of constant pain.

benj

Thanks! Yeah that makes a lot more sense

Alex G

Gotcha, that makes a lot of sense regarding why the scouts will come to them. Thanks for the OVA info. I will try to watch them ASAP

Alex G

It felt like envy to me too. Or regret that he wasn't able to find something for himself, or something like that.

Alex G

That's true, good point

Alex G

Good I'm glad. That was one of the most interesting parts of this episode. I'm still thinking about it

Alex G

also kind of sad that levi went all this time suspecting that kenny was actually his dad, and fought him anyway.

Jack Cas

Not sure if anyone has said anything about it yet since it's still a little ways off, but there's an end credit scene for episode 19 that you don't wanna miss!

Valeri

Just a quick point of clarification, Uri said that he wanted to build a paradise in the fading twilight world. He's not saying that he wants destruction and then a new paradise, but that he wants the remaining time before the destruction of humanity in the walls to be a paradise (hence is constant preaching of love and peace), as he seems to believe that the destruction is inevitable. Its a sharp contrast to Kenny's worldview of violence, and Uri seems to be blaming himself for not providing humanity (and hence Kenny) with a peaceful paradise before their destruction that is leading them to violence. Also, Kenny's realization at the end (at least the way I interpreted it) is that he came to the conclusion that just as he was drunk on the idea of being like Uri (that being his purpose), Uri was drunk on the idea of creating paradise before the end of humanity. Kenny's eventual conclusion is that everyone needs a purpose to keep pushing forward, even Uri, who he believed saw the world in a different way to him. Loved your reaction and analysis, as always!

Arman Jasuja

I feel like we didn't get to know Kenny enough in the show for his death scene to work for me personally like yes we got to see him a bunch but barely got to know him and I think was used to give Levi a bigger role in this season and some character growth I guess it just felt rushed but I still liked your analysis on him and the message he gave before dying. He being the one to give Levi that syringe formula at the end felt kinda unnecesary since we could have just gotten a scene of Levi foraging under the church and finding the bag with the syringe which at this point Eren and Historia knew what it did so they could have told him.

Ramon Cintron

I like to think that Kenny's validation of Levi at the end of his life softened his heart a bit, which is why he was able to smile and thank his comrades.

Jack Cas

To explain what the monkey titan meant by they will come to us (No spoilers but I do want to clear that up using things we know about how the characters will move on to their next objective, and details from that final scene in this episode, but I understand if you skip this comment). If you look at that scene they were inside the walls based on the buildings that looked similar to where our main cast is, and the fact that there is a wall in the background lol. But Reiner and Bert and probably in wall Maria because thats the only place they can be without having the scouts or anyone coming after them. And we know that at some point the scouts are going to try and plug the hole in wall Maria. Thats what the monkey titan meant by "They will come to us" or whatever he said.

R'Mani Leavell

As for Levi I could give a whole TEDtalk on his character study and the duality between him and Erwin's character. Such a well balanced duo who make for very interesting interactions. The two mirror both each other's negative and positive traits. Erwin coming off as a storing, caring, leader, with charisma and charm. Levi coming off as crude, harsh, ruthless, and cold. Only to find out Erwin can be rather cold and ruthless in his precise delivery, the extremes he is willing to go through in order to meet a certain end. Whereas Levi, you find out, is kind, deeply emotional, caring, compassionate, and would rather not see his comrades and friends be thrown into a fire like logs. But that's not even the half of it 😌 Isayama (the author) made such great character writing and intersectionality in character arcs.

Paola

Lets give it up for Kenny. This man took out a titan shifter with nothing but a dagger and a pistol. No ODM gear, no special blades, just that Ackerman blood

R'Mani Leavell

"Let's pray for world peace" You: Good luck with that 😆

Lysieblu

Build paradise... Levi going soft... Kenny's talking about how everyone needs to be drunk on something... Keep all these things in mind. And about episode 12, just watch the tease, I think I voted against it in a previous comment but I watched it again and changed my mind Btw next episode it's going to be really interesting, especially because one of your early theories.

Carlos Salazar

I feel like Kenny found what he was looking for in the end. His realization that "everyone had to be drunk on something." Even Uri of all people (the person Kenny saw as the "strongest"). He wasn't thinking less of people who had religion. He was just comparing that to how he (himself) wanted power and that's what he got drunk on to keep going. Every living person (no matter how strong, pathetic, amazing, rich, poor, from all walks of earth) needs 'something' to drive them to keep going. ie: The King, religion, money, booze, women, children, faith, power. "everyone is a slave to something".

Paola

Creating paradize is more a thing the king wanted to do in the walls. The fact he said the world in the wall was destined to doom is not logically relative to it tho.

Jiao

Fun fact: the manga chapter corresponding to this episode, the one where Uri and Kenny talk about friendship and paradise, is apparently Isayama's favorite chapter of the manga. With regards to your question at the end about why the Coordinate will come to them, remember Reiner and Bertholdt have known where the Scouts' big destination is since Erwin revealed it during his speech convincing the recruits to join. Plus, now that Eren has learned hardening (though they don't know that, they're just assuming the Scouts will come eventually), there is nothing left in the way of them fixing the walls and heading south to Shiganshina with basement key in hand — so this confrontation is coming soon. Related to that point! Post-credit scene aside, are you planning on watching any of the OVAs before starting up Season 3 Part 2? I super recommend watching at least the two Annie episodes (Attack on Titan Lost Girls episodes 1 and 2) before the next arc begins. Lost Girls episode 3, which is about Mikasa, also takes place directly after episode 12 of this season.

a. tree

i understand the original experience argument people make, but you've already deviated from that by not waiting 1+ years between each season and 1 week between episodes. you've also held off on watching openings with lighter spoilers than those credits. sorry, but i'll just forever maintain the end credits of that episode are an overstep of creative liberty on the anime's part lol. but ultimately it's completely up to you. if you do choose to watch it just pls try not to read too much into it or pay too close of attention. and definitely don't pause it to analyze bc there's some real spoilers in there😂

joe martin

This is probably my favorite or one of my favorite episodes. I don't think it's the best episode in the series (having watched up to the end of Season 4 Part 1) but there are a lot of themes and ideas that really resonated and brought a new perspective for me. The episode title is called "Friends" and we see this very unlikely friendship between Kenny and Uri and what Kenny is still holding on to. Before meeting Uri, Kenny seemed to live life as he wanted and mainly focused on gaining power as I guess living in the underground plus being prosecuted will force you to kill or not be killed basically. It's interesting to see that shift in him after meeting Uri and you have to wonder whether it was good for him or not? In some ways, I think rather than criticizing what drove others he actually envied them but had no other way of expressing those emotions. While he might disagree with Uri on what the world needs, violence or paradise, he at the same time wishes to have the peace and mentality that Uri and his followers/the church seem to have. I think he was somewhat disillusioned by this actually and put Uri on a pedestal until his conclusion near his death. While it may be cynical, in many ways it is correct that almost everyone is a "slave" to something and now necessarily a bad thing. Anyway, this got super long and jumbled, just some of my many thoughts about this episode, friendships, and how others can influence your life for better or worse.

pr37

Great analysis, I love this episode a lot, but the next one is my favourite of season 3 part 1. I can't wait to you to see it

rafasea

when Kenny said everyone is a slave to something, he included "power" and it showed himself, so yeah you're right he included himself in that, he wasn't trying to say it was everyone else and not him

Francesca White

This is such a wonderful episode and such a wonderful reaction. Heading into the next half of this season has me thrilled to see what you think. I'm so excited! That scene of Levi thanking his squad is a whole mood.

bl0odm1st

“Everyone’s a slave to something.”definitely gonna be a motif and what and interesting one at that if could mean endless things

DrowsyCody

i'm curious how strong Mikasa would be at this point if she'd been trained to fight as a child like Levi lol, i honestly think she might surpass him considering how strong she was even without training. this has nothing to do with the episode lol it's just a thought i had

Francesca White

Look on the bright side Alex, you'll be able to appreciate his character on a rewatch!
