In Attack on Titan 3x8 Outside the Walls of Orvud District, the episode sets the record for the biggest titan and the highest number of "Erens" (?).

 Ft. Rod "the crabworm" Reiss.

Comments

I definitely don't see it as virtuous, even if it might end up doing some good.

Alex G

Exactly, just as you said at the end here and Erwin said at the end of season 2 the wall hiding the truth is finally crumbling.

Chris

I don't think nothing is victorious in this show. I'm watching for the first time with Alex, and srsly, this show is a big blob of Grey and black

Raysa Fonseca

Make sure you rewatch this reaction at somepoint once all is said and done.

Zac Rushton

It reminded me of that Principal Skinner meme were he's looking down and says "Pathetic"

Theories as to why rod reiss is so fucked up: 1) history broke his back before he transformed 2) he ingested the titan serum instead of injecting it. There has to be a difference right? 3) he said "I must never become a titan myself“ = maybe he knew he’d be a fucked up titan? Also: you asked about his goals, but remember, he’s a dumb titan right now. He doesn’t really have goals right now, he’s just abnormal and that’s why he’s attracted to the biggest number of people (remember season 1, they explained how the abnormal ones ignore the formation and rush to the biggest number of people)

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Oh my, I forgot how gross Rod's titan is.

I feel like this show lays out a lot of actions and motivations of the characters completely fairly. I think you can justify grisha's actions from a logical standpoint while also criticizing it, because i dunno, killing kids might be kind of horrible. It's kind of how like you said, in this world when people get too attached to "the ends justify the means," they are lead to some messed up conclusions.

Keegan Brakhage

NO but they DID! Mikasa looked absolutely SICK i died when i saw her face she's literally giving him the stink-eye i cannot and look at historia lmaooo her face is saying "the fuck is wrong with this dude" Jean's got that "you're screwing with me right now?" face on

Based on your philosophy of virtue before "ends justifying the means", I'm interested to hear more about your opinions on Grisha killing the Reiss family. It may have broken a cycle of extremely bad things, but it feels simultaneously wrong and right. Do you see it as virtuous?

Sean D

Oh boy, I absolutely love the next few episodes, it's gonna be great!

Rod Reiss is a human transmutation experiment gone wrong. Remember Trisha Elric? Haha, that was just the prototype! In all seriousness really loving these reactions. I echo what pretty much most other people have said. One of the comments on the YouTube video of this one pointed out your empathy towards characters being a huge positive in your videos and I agree. You have really different takes on these shows. It's also refreshing to see someone who understands what's going on in the show. This season was definitely information overload for some people, myself included. But I think you're digesting it really well.

Nick

Yeah his final hope was to eat Eren if anything. I think at one point Rod Reiss even said he "can't turn into a titan" because it would be bad. Something like that. He wanted Historia to do it for a reason.

Nick

I probably cackled more than i should have when Eren was crying and you said, "They look disgusted."

BubbleTea

Rod Reiss' plan? He is a pure titan acting on instinct, he lost when Historia broke the syringe

Carlos Salazar

Yeah this season feels like a huge turning point in that way. And I really felt it in this episode

Alex G

I loved seeing how close Levi squad has gotten this episode. Jean really cares about Eren now, they all make jokes with each other, Sasha and Mikasa have a strong bond, and just all their interactions with each other make me so happy to see. Even Levi talks to them more than ever. They really are a realistic depiction of best friends in a time of war. Let me add: Armin reaching his hand out to Eren, Connie and Levi sharing that moment when freeing Eren, Mikasa and Historia joking about punching Levi

Katrina Vieira

I love Historia's "destructive pacifists" phrase. It's so weird, like Hange said — why would anyone *want* humanity to be hiding from the Titans forever, or even be totally wiped out by them if it came to that? Why does the government send out the military to kill Titans if that's the case? And if it's fine by them for humanity to be killed by the Titans, why do the government frown upon them going outside the walls to where Titans are, or developing technology towards that end, or even just thinking about doing so? It not only seems like there is something more important to them than humanity, but there are a bunch of contradictions, at least I think.

It's not quite normal Titan behavior, as Pure Titans just go for the nearest human being (which is why Eren was confused Rod wasn't eating him). This is more like an abnormal, which if I recall correctly from the 57th Expedition arc tend to be attracted to the center of large masses of people (they ignored the outer ranks of the formation and headed inwards to where soldiers were more concentrated). So basically he's a giant, deformed, abnormal-class Titan.

a. tree

Another theory is that it has something to do with his back being broken or fractured when he drew the serum into his bloodstream (there was a big CRACK when Historia threw him); it could also have something to do with him only taking in a small amount of the fluid

a. tree

Just a reminder, unless a titan eats someone who can transform, they are not intelligent. So the crabworm titan is just following normal titan behavior, and Erwin is probably predicting his actions based on that.

DJ Cargill

Well about whats rod reiss's plan is, he cant have one. He is not a titan shifter, I know him being this big and an abnormal may be confusing but the titan serum he drank(!) just makes him a pure titan. Also im sure someone else already said this but when kenny put a knife in Rod Reiss's mouth he cut his tongue so when he licked the serum it got into his blood through the wound. For the reason why he is so big, I don't think we have a clear reason. Some theories are; wrongful injection of the titan fluid and the fluid is a special one to make sure it makes a strong titan, or that he wanted to take back the founding titan which is the strongest titan so he became a very big abnormal. Or maybe "Rod" Reiss is just compensating for something really hard.

Crabworm Titan > Colossal Titan
