I love Katara's discussion with her father because I wish Ed had done that with Hohenheim (FMAB). That was something that never really resolved itself in their relationship.

I really love "The Headband", it's so great! Regarding the silent treatment, I always thought that Iroh seemed more disappointed than angry, and maybe a little disillusioned. I interpret it as him feeling like he failed Zuko, because he didn't get through to him before, and now he has just no advice left to give, he's already told him everything and it never stuck. I'm sure he's still hoping Zuko will eventually have that breakthrough, but he probably also thinks that it's out of his hands now, he did what he could, the rest is up to Zuko himself. It's so sad though, almost like the only comfort Zuko feels in this homecoming is with Iroh and Mai, and then to watch him get rejected... Although, maybe Iroh's also looking out for him, trying to stop him from coming coz he's afraid it'll have consequences? It's Azula that confuses me, honestly. I'm only confident that she cares more about Zuko than Iroh. She seems genuine here, and I do believe that she only sets him up as scapegoat after she figures out that he doesn't believe the Avatar is dead, but it's hard to tell how deep it goes. Worst case, she only wants him around to make herself look better, or maybe you're right and she is lonely. I do think that she's someone who would only consider her family as equals. I remember, at the start of season 2, I was wondering if her wanting to take them prisoner was her looking out for them, coz I always thought that Ozai wanted her to get rid of them instead? But then she tried to hit Zuko with lightning and actually got Iroh and well, she sort of keeps flipfloping and I can't make up my mind. Maybe she is confused as well?

it was just casual music class tho i dont think that was an actual rehearsal lmao. I had regular music class in school that was not taken seriously and people def tap their feet on the floor and did plenty of other loud things. Like you said this is crazy nitpicky but im nitpicking your nitpick.

benj

I know everything ends well for Zuko and Iroh, but seeing Iroh in prison, god it hurts

Jupiterninja

This is the ONE episode where I actually have some of that 'well, actually' insider knowledge to nitpick the writing with: no conductor would EVER let their musicians tap their feet on the floor, it can throw off the rhythm and timing of everyone around them! I know they're going for the whole rules vs expression thing, but an orchestra rehearsal is really not the best way to show that. An orchestra HAS to be somewhat rigid and disciplined or the music will sound godawful lol. I did always wonder if those fire nation kids ever realised, after the war was over, that they had inadvertently helped the Avatar. I'd brag about that for the rest of my life, to be honest!

theres the first conversation in episode 1 season 3 where shes being kind to zuko too asking why he's worried about meeting with father for the first time. also in the beach episode and little bit in nightmares and daydreams azula shows some kindness to zuko as well

don't listen to anyone in the so called "fandom" that have issues with legit every episode in this show, its been hyper popularized to the point where every person and their mom have seen ATLA and a lot of people who shouldn't watch a show like that did just because it was popular and now they go online shitting on every fun slice of life "filler" episode there is in the show. The Headband is an iconic episode and the whole thing is hilarious and brilliant from beginning to end, I love the subtle worldbuilding and how fun the characters are in this episode.

Yeah, that Azula moment in episode 2 is 100% the only time I think Azula does something for Zuko purely out of kindness. She’s got a few other moments over the show that you can argue she’s probably doing it because she somewhat cares about him, but there’s always a second motive that just leaves you questioning it all. But it’s really hard to think of a selfish ulterior motive in this episode.

This is one of my favorite episodes to rewatch. I know a few people in the fandom have some issues with it- and it's certainly not perfect- but it just has so much energy to it. It's fun and cements my endearment to Aang as a character. He genuinely feels like someone I'd love to be friends with in real life because of how lighthearted and carefree he is. It also further humanizes residents of the Fire Nation, exposing the tactics used by authoritarian governments to manipulate the general population. It helps Katara and Aang's relationship too, showing Katara has some mutual feelings and that when Aang isn't putting too much pressure on himself, he's a very charming person that probably would be a desirable partner. The last thing is of course the humor. I don't care if it seems a little much in the context of what everything's leading up to because I always enjoy a good laugh haha

Same here. She holds everything together for so long but she is just a child herself. What I like about the way emotions are expressed in this episode, both through Katara and Aang, is that they express their emotions in a way that allows for resolution and also some personal responsibility. Katara says she understands her father but still feels sad. That is at least honest and is more satisfying than if she had attacked him and stormed off, leading to prolonged bitterness.

That is the biggest missing piece for me as well. I got my hopes up somewhat when I heard she had some development in the comics, and while I think there is a hint of that in Smoke and Shadows, her story is still unfinished! In a show where just about every character's journey is complete and satisfying, Azula is a huge dangling thread.

Alex G

I'm glad :D I think what I said about religion is one example of something pervasive, which is that things have to be boiled down and reduced in order to be spread, and are incomplete as a result. I like to think about things that way because then it becomes a challenge of something like, "what is this really about and what can I take away from it?"

Alex G

A lot of similarities! Not only do both cities have a culture of trying to ignore the danger outside the walls, but they also seem to have similar class structures. I'm tempted to say that in Ba Sing Se it is less of a conscious choice to ignore the dangers, since "there is no war in Ba Sing Se," but on some level I think that the leadership and policy probably reflects the local culture to some degree.

Alex G

I really love that moment with Katara and her dad. She deserves it since there's so few emotional moments where "she's" the one who gets to deal with what she's feeling. and as a show with a target audience towards kids, I think it was also a good way to show that emotions are emotions, and we can't always control them. We can understand the reason for something and acknowledge it but sometimes we still feel how we feel and we don't know why, like Katara says.

WolfWarrior623

One of the things I'm really hoping for from the new Avatar Studios is Azula's story. They briefly touched on the aftermath in the comics but it's not enough. I think her lie to Ozai about Zuko slaying the Avatar just came back to bite her in the end. Ozai was probably thinking wow you can lie and manipulate others but ME? Hell no, buzz off. And thus she lost her absolute last shred of sanity. Clever and confident as she was in this first episode, concocting what seemed like the perfect plan, but it totally backfired. When you play others, you play yourself.

I hope that Bosco was eaten after he had already died peacefully in his sleep

Yeah, I really Identify with the points on religion you bring up in this video. I grew up in a religious household, and I've since left it. That's not to say I'm anti-religious, because I'm absolutely not. However, I personally have a huge problem wrapping my head around all the dogma, and extra rules, since so much of it falls short of whatever is claimed to be "divine". I love the idea that all religions seem to point in some way towards truth, and the thing that upsets me is when people get stuck in the "I'm right, you're wrong" mindset. As always, I really love your insights and little moments of wisdom you put into these; it's really pushed me to think about a lot over the past year or so (or however long its been).

Funny thing, If you go back and look whenever toph throws the first rock she’s just shooting straight ahead. But when she has to hit that flying fire ball you can see the duke holding her arm, seeming to imply he’s there to either aim or tap when to go.

Ian

One thing I'm noticing they make a habit of overlooking sometimes is they make Toph too powerful. Like, in episode 1 they seem to totally overlook her blindness, and she's able to pinpoint projectile strike the catapult/trebuchet on the other ship, and then also hit a projectile out of the air. Don't get me wrong, she's a badass, and I'm here for all of it, but sometimes they seem to overlook the fact she's blind and can only "see" things connected to the ground. Idk, just a nitpick I suddenly realized I had.

Details that I love in this episode: 1) when Katara is healing Aang's back, she touches the point that's blocking the avatar state, a thing that whe only see again in the finale. 2) how zuko's hair is not perfect in place during his return. Considering the importance of hair in the show, specially with hair and the fire nation.

What are your thoughts on a comparison between humanity that resides in the walls in AOT and the city of Ba Sing Se? It seems like both parties are trying to insulate themselves from potential danger; Ba Sing Se in the form of propaganda and humanity in AOT in the form of drunken comfort ala Hannes, and they end up paying the costs dearly when the danger does actually arrive.

Sharan Chakravarthy

I'm probably on the lower end of the "visually observant" spectrum, but I can immediately think of some images and frames of the third season that I love, even having seen them only once.

Alex G

Getting rid of DR Movie Studio for Season 3 production and keeping JM Animation and getting a new studio (Moi Animation) was the one of the best behind the scenes changes they made during the show. JM animated episodes are still the best compared to the other two studios but Moi is miles better than DR imo. I'm ranting about the studios and shiz cause Season 3 animation hits different compared to the other seasons, I mean its all amazing obviously but the Fire Nation landscapes and Fire Nation capital city design are just SO good. Everything about the Fire Nation design, from the architecture to the clothing, to unfortunately even their weapons/military stuff, is just so visually appealing to look at. I could watch Zuko and Azula dressed up in fancy royal Fire Nation clothes walking and talking around the palace/city for an entire season, we get a lot of it though in this first half of the season and I cherish every second.
