It might be one of those things where you don't have the aptitude for an art -> you don't get rewarded -> you lose interest -> you lose approval -> you become resentful of the art.

But overall this episode did bring a good point about Soren hating magic that even if Soren listens to his dad he probably has never been up to par with Claudia because his Dad and her share a common interest for black magic so that maybe why he doesn't know much about his plan/other hidden things(the mirror and the egg).
