Not only have we had that technology for many years now (Google shipped offline song identification for Pixel phones in 2017), but hooooo buddy does it get worse. (I don't claim to know if this is actually the case with Crysta, but that's what I took Jake's read on the situation to be). In the ATM analogue, assuming similar conditions, I wouldn't just go ahead and decide to pick 20 on my own but I would probably ask "do you happen to have a 5 on you so that I can make a single withdrawal and exchange a 20?" to check if the more convenient option was workable. I probably wouldn't pick the 20 in the situation Jake describes though, but that's 100% because I have a stick up my ass about dark pattern design so my stubbornness to work against it kicks in, lol.

Think it’s meant to help people with hearing difficulties and it’s been in there for a long time now. Don’t know if that means apps are tapping into that capability for ads or whatever. Probably not. Just saying the tech is there.

I think it would just show up as a sudden but sustained shift in minimum amplitude. Like 0 - 40 db in .02 seconds and then it just stays there. At least intuitively that’s what I’d expect.

On iPhone YouTube asks for permission so if Google wanted to spy without permission, they’d need Apple to be in on the conspiracy, but if I flip that one switch then Google has my mic directly, indefinitely. The issue then is recognizing running water. The problem here is different faucets make different noises. I’m not sure how different they are though. I suspect it might be similar to just noise. And if they had access over a long time it would be easy to train an AI to detect your specific faucet by sound pattern, along with the data about when you pickup the phone (never while this particular frequency of noise is happening at this location). Google has been leading AI stuff for like a decade so if anyone could do it… I could actually see an AI algorithm that is designed to maximize ad time figuring this out by itself if it was given all the listening data from millions of phones

Just wanted to share an interesting theory about why schizophrenia rates have stayed stable despite evolutionary pressures: cliffs-edge genetic benefits in our advanced brains. Schizophrenia genes do not exist in Neanderthals or other homo species, and the changes in our brains lead to great genetic benefit except for a small, stable fraction of people where their combination leads to disorganized mental processes. Perhaps an over-connectivity and down-regulation of neuronal pruning - which we also see in ADHD and autism. For the majority of people, our advanced brains lead to great survival chances, for the rest of us, we get to enjoy genetic predisposition to mental health struggles. All that being said, the lives of the neurodivergent and people who struggle with mental health would be greatly improved by smashing capitalism. Seems like it's the same technique for all the "organs full of plastic," so we can all chill. Further investigation is required.

The analysis reminds of me of the pre-Obama era in how a general suspicion of ‘the establishment’ created a large common ground between left and right wing conspiracists. On a final note the separation between r/ Conspiracies and r/ UFO is really interesting. I’ve become so used to ALL the fringe ideas being smooshed together it’s positively strange to see the different subcultures actually separate themselves.
