How to Model a Microphone Mesh

Sure. At recording time it was the only way I could work out how to select the unsubdivided edges after the subdivision modifier had been applied. I used creasing but I could have used bevel weighting or maybe sharpness... any option that is selectable from the Select Similar menu. Without this step, once you subdivide, it's not possible to easily select the original edges in order to dissolve them. The update 01 I posted today shows a way to create the hex shapes without this "crease" step :-)

Could you clarify why the crease step was necessary? That was the one step where I didnโ€™t quite get how or why it worked (from the creased triโ€™s to the sub-D to the hexagons.)

Thanks Chris. Took me a bit of trial and error but I think itโ€™s a decent workflow ๐Ÿ˜…

When people say 'do it with a shader' John says 'hold on, I can model that!'. Boldly going where mere modelling mortals fear to tread. All in 8 minutes, amazing John!

You're welcome Brent! It was a bit of a head scratcher but fun to work out. Thanks for the idea.

If you have any circles that are a bit distorted just select the loop and use LoopTools > Circle to reshape.

Oh, this is perfect. Thank you very much for this excellent example.
