Man, I was firing on all cylinders tonight doing the line work. In more recent months I've been doing the roughs on Friday and the inking on Sunday as to split up the work load, along with give me time away from the roughs with a fresh pair of eyes. Plenty of times I'll draw up a rough and go "Perfect!", only for the next day to go "holy crap this is bad!" This past Friday, however, my discomfort levels with the ol' nut pain was on the higher end. On days like that there doesn't seem to be any sitting position to alleviate the pain. Because of that I opted to do jack shit. "Then do the roughs on Saturday instead," you might say! Well, I'm lazy and don't want to do anything on Saturday. It's my one day off in the week! Despite having to do both roughs and inking today, I managed to get it finished rather painlessly! Even with a half hour break to refresh my eyes, it took less than three hours to get the line work done! Okay, sure. There isn't any difficult angles, and it's mostly shoulders and up. Not the most difficult page to draw in the world. But I still surprised myself with how quick I got it. Some days it takes me longer just getting the roughs to look right! One thing that's helped get things done quicker is my change in inking method. Not sure if anyone has noticed, but I started taking things slower when I ink the lines, along with cranking up the stabilization tool in CSP. Before I'd leave it around 18%, and would do fast strokes. This resulted in me redoing lines a bunch to get it right, or doing a series of smaller strokes for a single line. Now I set the stabilization to around 80%. I might be inking "slower", but with fewer mistakes means I get done faster with a cleaner look. It also allows me for better control of the line weight, as I'm not having to worry so much about getting the line to not look so wobbly and instead focus on the amount of pressure I use. My hope is that this is resulting in a better looking comic.
