Earwig and the Witch is not good. I already knew going into it that I probably wasn't going to like it, as Goro Miyazaki is pretty mediocre as a director. Add on top of that 3D CG animation that feels about a decade and change old with character models that look like plastic toys, I made sure to keep my expectations low. And for the most part, I was nonchalant about it. My low expectations were met. But then I paused the movie to use the bathroom at what I thought was going to be the end of the second act, only for there to be six minutes left into the movie. Those remaining minutes effectively go "and then things worked out and I guess we're a happy family now okay bye bye!" Rather soured what I got from the movie. I kept waiting for the movie to "start" but then it ended. Worse yet, it leaves some story threads hanging that don't really get properly answered. If you have HBO Max or whatever and can stream it as part of your subscription, then it's harmless. I wouldn't recommend buying it though unless you're a Ghibli completionist, at which point I'll argue you can't be because you don't own On Your Mark. So neener neener!
