Honest Government Ad | Anthony Salmonese’s Surprise

Dear Patrons

Here is the latest Honest Government Ad you've helped us to produce

Honest Government Ad | Anthony Salmonese’s Surprise

No you're not dreaming, we published our last HGA about Canada's election only last week, and we're back already with another episode this week. Booya

That's coz we're working as hard as we can leading up to the election, to help keep people informed about what's going down.

And unfortunately, what went down a fortnight ago in the last sitting week of Parliament - while everyone was focusing on the Budget - was some downright utter fishfuckery, as Labor and the Coalition voted together (again) to ram through laws that weaken our already weak Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).

Why? Because for once, our shit (Howard-era 1999) Environment Act, was in danger of doing what it should be doing: protecting the environment, and a unique threatened species, from a destructive industry: salmon farming in Tasmania. So of course our major parties kindly stepped in - not to enforce the Act, but to change the laws to protect the salmon industry.

And whilst the reason given for this is to save salmon jobs (if that was the aim, those $37M dollars in subsidies could have paid out every one of those workers in Macquarie Harbour), those salmon jobs are just an excuse for weakening our environmental laws, by making it harder for communities across Australia to legally challenge environmental approvals - including coal and gas developments, land-clearing, logging etc. Which of course is an attack on Australians' democratic rights.

(Our PM knows this. Because when he was in opposition, and the Coalition tried to introduce similar amendments to our Environment Act, he gave a valiant speech saying, “the right of citizens with standing to challenge their governments in court is a fundamental pillar of a robust democracy. We must not set aside this principle...")

I was really pissed off when I saw what went down (as you can probably tell). So I did what I always do to stay sane: write an Honest Government Ad about it!

If you want to know more about this story, I've included a bunch of links in the YouTube video description. If you only watch one thing, make it this press conference led by Andrew Wilkie MP (Independent for Clarke), featuring statements from other MPs, Neighbours of Fish Farming, as well as Peter George who is running as the Community Independent for Franklin: ground zero for the toxic salmon industry.

And if you missed it, here's the HGA we made last year featuring our mate Punters' Politics about this government's failure to strengthen our EPBC Act.

I'm going to take a couple days' rest and then we'll get stuck into the next HGA. I think we can squeeze in at least one more before the election - what do you think?

Until then, take care!

Giordano & team

PS. Sorry for not sharing the audio preview for this HGA as I normally do. In trying to get as many episodes done in a short time, I didn't have time to arrange the preview on this one. Apologies.

PPS. We'll publish the video to the other platforms in the morning. In the meantime, you can watch it on our YouTube channel:

Calling themselves "Labor" is an insult to the labor movement worldwide.

Wow! another so on focus ad. You folk are really nailing it. I have shared it on my Facebook and will share it on our Caz4cowper group if someone hasn’t already done it. 👍🏼

Just dropped a donation into the hat of Kate Chaney (Curtain in Perth) because just voting isn't enough and I can spare a few dollars. Voting for "anyone but Tony Burke" in my local electorate is a statement but it's really unlikely to elect someone better. Thank fuck for preferential voting.

Moz in Oz

Another excellent video on an important topic…well done!

Ruth Keogh

Excellent work and such an important topic! No more salmon for me unless I can be sure it’s not from Tasmania and is sustainably farmed or caught.

SALLY WARMINGTON

you are really cooking. My representative (sic) Labor MP Peter Khalil here in Wills is avoiding talking about the environment. So I have to be inventive in posting replies to his social media how Labor has approved 28 coal and gas projects. He is avoiding attending candidate forums too. He is the MP whose own Environment and Climate Advisory Committee resigned en masse in September last year after the second lot of coal mines approved... and he couldn't even be bothered a polite acknowledgement of our resignations or the hours we put in to that committee. Luckily for us he is on about a 4% margin to the Greens. That gives us hope here. Going to have to be inventive how I can include this video in one of my social media replies.

John Englart

Thats another great ad. Salmonese. Who comes up with this?

John

Always good to start the day here with a fresh video from you! Very nicely done - I particularly liked the carrot flying off the counter due to the hacking with that knife. Basically that captured the spirit of the government nerfing the environmental protection laws - which, to me, is a criminal act by the politicians involved. That salmon industry really sucks and I'm not surprised Washington State tossed out one of the companies and the Canadians outlawed farming Salmon. It really would be good to see the independent candidate push out the current Minister for Fisheries in the election! Can that last minute shite-combo bill be challenged in the courts in Australia? I hope so ...

Robert Bismuth

More phuckups by profiteer politicians, in this case to suppress the vote by suppressing living voters. Zoë, you nailed it!

Mark D Larsen

Had a brief conversation with Peter George, asked him about where he stands in areas outside (what seems to be) his main focus. I was very impressed with his responses. He replied to my enquiry with actual answers to my questions, on a weekend, and apologised for a perceived delay! I've been asking questions of other candidates in the Franklin electorate, both on State and Federal issues, and most can't even be bothered to reply. If they do it's just a stock "template" reply that doesn't address any query directly. I used to be a "swing" voter that voted for the party I thought would do the best job, that changed to the party that was the lesser of 2 evils. Then in the '80's I gave up on the ALP/LNP and they'll never see my vote again.

Jim McCarthy

Sneaky :) It's another good one, thanks everyone!
