Checklist: Album/CD Art Credits

Ask and I shall cut and paste. Here's a list of my album/CD/DVD artwork. Okay, one person asked, but it's an easy ask.

Some of the early color artwork is buried in the past as they were colored like animation cels. I had no head for production or anything like bluelines or full process original color art. I did some color work this way for Deadline and Hectic Planet, and later on Sarah colored comic and CD covers and the Milk & Cheese trading card set this way. The biggest problem with this process (besides it being a time suck to paint, as well as a trip into Manhattan to get the acetate "cel" shot from the line art) was that the printers often shot the art too dark. One of the last jobs we did using the animation style coloring was for a picture disc (Ska American Style), and it printed horrendously, dark and muddied. We were both happy to chuck it for digital coloring once that became an option for us.

This list should be complete, with a few details missing in some cases regarding year of release, etc. I try to add to my bibliography whenever a new comic or book, etc, is published/produced, but I don't always remember. Which reminds me I have to add two things, the latest issue of MAD reprints some of our work, and, to our shock and surprise, marvel actually send us a contributor's copy of the Predator Omnibus (The original Years, aka, all the stuff Dark Horse did that we're not paying anyone for).

I can only think of one band gig that fell through, I was asked to draw a cover for a Murphy's Law album back in the day because of Milk & Cheese but was fired because they didn't like my initial sketches. I signed a contract was signed, I didn't get a kill fee for my time, if I remember correctly. I was once asked to do a cover for the band Calabrese, which I was into doing, but I had to drop out because of my schedule. They never e-mailed me back after I wrote them so I guess they were pissed at me. Or just indifferent. La la la.

One thing that's not on this list is a VHS tape of some metal videos that I provided black and white artwork for the cover. I was sent a copy back in the day but it may have disappeared over the decades. I never got a copy of the only DVD we ever did a cover for, one day I'll poke around for the information, if not a copy. I got to draw the decapitated heads of a bunch of band members, including the MC Bat Commander and Crash McLarson from The Aquabats.

Anyway, here's the list, like a song, it's not that long. I had fun doing these, they're far from the best art I've ever done but people seemed to like them. The earlier covers are hard for me to look at, although I think the Radon 7" still looks pretty good. I kept the art to that one, all told I think I have three or four covers left from the album/band t-shirt days (and I have a list of t-shirt designs, if anyone wants that posted, chime in).

Above: MC Frontalot: Solved, without title text. The only album I worked on that was colored by someone other than Sarah, for reasons that escape me. I was happy with the results but it always looks weird to me when my art is colored by anyone else (or lettered by anyone but me, for that matter).
