Comic Book Ephemera Item Of The Day

I'm cleaning up the studio (not because I want to or am procrastinating, but because it's gotten to "that point") and came across my file booklet where I keep old business cards.

I always forget what I have in there. There's a lot of folks I met once, or worked with for a time on something or other (a lot of Cartoon Network cards), and some cartoonists and writers I met.

Unfortunately, some of them are no longer with us, like Mr. Sheldon Moldoff, who has been discussed quite a bit on this site due to his being the co-creator of bat-Mite and a World's Funnest contributor (among many other things). He gave me his card during the one time I met him, when we were table mates at the Pittsburgh Comic Con. Where I never got to tell him I wrote World's Funnest, because he was mostly giving Sarah and I career advice when things were slow. In a nice way. But after he started I didn't feel like interrupting anything or bringing up the fact we had just worked together on a couple of pages. And that we we working in animation at the time. I don't know why, it just seemed weird to bring it up while he was taking us under his wing, so to say. It was sweet and I was all geeked out and it was really nice meeting him. Sarah bought a Batwoman vs Catwoman color drawing from him, which is still in the art files.

Seeing business cards of cartoonists is always interesting to me, what they portray, the characters being used (or not being used), etc. You can also tell who has a design sense (or hired someone who has a design senses) and who didn't care much about making anything fancy. Usually the older creators had the plainest cards. Mine would be all handwritten if I had to design them myself.

If these sorts of career flotsam and jetsam things appeal to you, there's a few more of interest I can post, either for the person, the art, or both. I might have to blur a few things for the folks who are still, fortunately, still with us. I think I can figure that out now in Photoshop. How exciting!

Nodell (and his wife, Carrie) were such fixtures on the con circuit, both of them very nice. Dark Horse always invited them to parties, I'd see them a lot at SDCC, they once sat with us for a while at a table. Carrie took a couple of bread rolls in her purse for later, I remember seeing that with many Depression-era folks, like my grandmother who used to take rolls and the little sugar and salt packets home with her all the time.

Yes please! I have one of those cards too - I met him once when he was sharing a table with Matt Nodell. I commissioned a color Hawkman drawing as a gift for my brother ($60!) and always meant to get another for myself but never did. Was a nice old man.

I'd love to see more, please! Seeing weird ephemera like this is great :)
