I think Coby pretty much nailed her take on this one. It felt way more grounded and realistic than most zombie-type movies, which I really appreciated. Of similar films, it probably reminded me most of I Am Legend, but that one leaned more Hollywood. I preferred the rawer feel here. Definitely one I could see revisiting.

I wish people would stop calling these zombies. A zombie is someone who has returned from the dead. These humans were infected with a virus, a virus of rage. In most zombie movies, two things are in common: they eat humans, and the only way to kill them is to destroy their brains.

This movie kind of reinvigorated the "zombie" genre (even though they technically aren't really zombies), partly because it had a low budget feel, but there was a really subtle social commentary about the violent nature of humanity. This one was definitely the best in the series in my opinion, partly because it was written by Alex Garland, who is a great writer.
He always subtly adds a layer of social commentary that isn't overstated, but just creeps into the themes. I think the Walking Dead also came out shortly after this and feels like it stole the kind of post-apocalyptic opening of Jim wandering through abandoned cityscapes.
Then the way it shows the philosophy of the leader of the soldiers talking about people killing people, juxtaposed with Sgt Farrel (the guy the that defended Jim, Hannah and Selena, that the soldiers later killed) and the fact that the real horror by the end of it was the own desperate nature of the uninfected soldiers who became the real enemy by the end. Then the way Jim comes back and exhibits a kind of rage himself as he takes out the soldiers was just really well cut together with the editing and music and the overall themes of the movie.
I still find this one to be the absolute best of the series, by far, partly because of how small scale and grounded it was, along with the kind of low budget vibe it gives off. This is an all time classic "zombie" movie

I love this movie Coby...but, the zombies in this have GOT to be the worst.... I mean, if I'm ever in a zombie apocalypse... I DO NOT want zombies that can run faster than me...I want the slow, lazy zombies that give me time to eat a donut before they've got across the room. I like my brains in my head, and with these fast ass zombies I'd last about 30 seconds before I'm part of the undead.

One of the greatest horror films of all time. About 10 years ago, I took a community college film class, and if it tells you anything, this is the movie every student wanted to make.
