BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) - Full Watch Along

After watching with you for a long while on YT, I finally signed up here, spent my $10, just to watch this with you, Coby, a film I first saw in the 1970s and more than a few times since. And I have to say... I saw the ending today, in a whole new light watching your reaction. 60yo man, crying. Wow.

Daniel Doble

This is a fantastic movie. I've watched it numerous times and never tire of it. Robert Redford has many films I enjoy; I recommend Jeremiah Johnson, Brubaker, and True Lies. As for Paul Newman, Cool Hand Luke is probably my favorite of his movies. In reality, the two men were cornered by a small group of Bolivian soldiers and a local official in the mining town of San Vicente on November 7, 1908. While the movie implies a dramatic "blaze of glory," the likely reality was much darker. After a prolonged gunfight, soldiers heard two shots from inside the house where the outlaws were hiding. It is believed that the Sundance Kid was severely wounded, and Butch Cassidy shot him to put him out of his misery before turning the gun on himself.

+1 for "All the President's Men"!

The story was pretty true by what was known about Butch and Sundance in 1969. The ending is vague because there are no grave stones while Butch's sister visited the set and claimed she had seen him one last time. All the New York montage took place on the set of Barbra Streisand next movie "Hello Dolly". It was considered top secret so the filmmakers had to find a work around. Good reaction though.

I'm sure other have suggested these, but one movie each for Paul & Bob: "The Color of Money," for which Paul won his only Oscar. Technically a sequal to "The Hustler," but not necessary to see that first. "All the Presidens't Men," which Redford Redford both starred in and help produce.

Daniel

The only other “buddy” movie Newman & Redford made was The Sting. Highly recommend.

Great reaction, as usual, Coby! When you said early on that you hoped neither of them died... ugh. The ending of this movie is iconic. In the movie "Beverly Hills Cop," there's a brief reference to it. I'm sure that there are others. Katherine Ross, who played Etta, starred in "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman. Years later she married Sam Elliott. You noticed Sam Elliott's name in the credits, although we never actually saw his face. One name that you didn't notice was Cloris Leachman. She played Agnes, the hooker that Butch was with while Sundance was watching out the window. If you don't recognize the name, she played Frau Blucher in "Young Frankenstein," among other things. Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival takes its name from his character. The screenplay was written by William Goldman, who also wrote the screenplay for another Robert Redford film, "All the President's Men," as well as both the book and the screenplay for "The Princess Bride." Paul Newman and Robert Redford teamed up again 4 years later in "The Sting," which is every bit as good, perhaps even better.

Flounder, "Harold and Maude" was posted yesterday. :-)

I thought Harold and Maude was on the menu for this past week. Is it dropping anytime soon?

A little bit of trivia for you all.... Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid's infamous gang "The Wild Bunch" included a man called Harvey Alexander Logan, better known as Kid Curry..... after the success of this movie, he was immortalised in TV with the brilliantly entertaining show "Alias Smith and Jones" with Ben Murphy playing the outlaw alongside the wonderful Pete Duel as Hannibal Hayes..... Although the depiction of Kid Curry in the show was wildly different from true events, it was a fantastic and very re-watchable western tv show.... Sadly and tragically, Pete Duel died of suicide by gunshot at the young age of 31 shortly before filming of the third season causing the show to recast the role which quickly led to the shows own demise.
