I don't know about in the UK, but in the US once upon a time, TV shows would always have married couples sleeping in separate beds, because showing them sharing a bed was apparently considered too risque. For example, "I Love Lucy" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" had their couples in separate beds. One of the first shows to finally have a couple in the same bed was "The Brady Bunch". "Fawlty Towers" would have aired shortly after "The Brady Bunch", so it presumably was still fairly common.

Prunella Scales who plays Sybil is an extraordinary actress and has played in some great films that you may react to one day. She is a very healthy looking 93 years old and her husband of 60 years just passed away last year. By the way, the character of Basil Fawlty is based on a real man named Donald Sinclair. John Cleese and the rest of the Monty Python crew were filming on location in the Torquay, Devon area and stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel which Sinclair owned. John Cleese described him as "the rudest man I have ever come across in my life"! The Gleneagles Hotel was demolished in 2015 and a new retirement facility built in its place and was named Sachs Lodge in memory of Andrew Sachs who played Manuel and who passed away in 2016. The funny thing about this episode and a couple more to come is the sexual innuendo, what the British call "cheeky behavior" has permeated British television since the 1950s up until today but they have had and still have some of the most sexual repressive laws in the Western World!!
