Want to help test our NEW Roku app?

Greetings, Citizens of the Land of Traxia! (That sounds right...)

Erik here once again, and it is amazing to finally be able to say this: our new Roku app is almost here! And I need your help to test it out.

My colleague Nik and I been working with a major app-development company over the last 6 months, along with our new video hosting provider, to bring a revamped RiffTrax Roku Channel to life, and I'm extremely excited about the progress we've made. Not only will you be able to subscribe to Friends of RiffTrax and watch your Library of RiffTrax video purchases, but this new app includes lots of stability improvements and just an overall better user experience.

This 2.0 version of the app uses the email address and password from your RiffTrax.com account to authenticate, which removes one of the main issues we kept seeing in the previous app. When you sign in, the app automatically knows your subscription status, if any, as well as which items you've purchased. Your previous subscription, if you have one, will come along with it; or, if you're brand new to this whole "streaming RiffTrax" thing, you'll be able to sign up at any time.

Plus, in this new version, bundles of products — like Shorts DVDs, and any Digital Bundle Products (coming soon) will be watchable right from the Library! Soon you'll also see rows such as "Traxian videos" that include the videos available to you based on your actual Patreon tier.

Search results currently return any titles available to Friends subscribers:

On top of that, almost all videos are linked to their trailers, as you can see below — AND, captions are finally supported, where available! (Not all of our videos are captioned yet, but we're adding more all the time.) Huzzah!

I'm working on even more Friends integration between the app and the site, including a Catalog filter for Friends titles, and more.

What I'm looking for are some patient Traxians who have been members on the site for a while and, ideally, subscribers to our current Roku app for a bit as well — though that's not a hard requirement.

There are some things that do not exist in this new app just yet, such as Watch lists, Library sorting/filtering, etc., and Live streaming — but those are things we are planning for a future update. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on what other features you'd like to see.

As long as you don't mind a few rough edges, your early feedback will help us shape the future of RiffTrax on your TV — of the future!

Thanks — and I can't wait to get the new app to you.

Erik

Glad to hear it, Michael! We're ironing out a few kinks but overall we're extremely happy and excited that it's out there in the wild!

Wanted to pass along well-deserved kudos for the new app. Before on my TCL Roku, viewing progress was never saved, and the interface was really glitchy. With the update, the UX is far smoother and I'm able to pick up watching wherever I leave off. Thank you!

I have a TCL Roku TV. I love the Rifftrax App, can't wait for the upgrade. I would be a friends subscriber, but I almost own all the content already through the website. Glad to see that the DVD & Blu-ray purchases will be added to the Roku app. Any chance some of the older Talkin' Rifftrax episodes from the YouTube channel will be included or The Film Crew episodes?

I am so excited about this. Can’t wait.

I forgot when I submitted my beta application that I also have a TCL roku tv

We have a Sony TV with its Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) that we use to stream on — netflix, youtube, amazon prime — as well as an Apple TV. So, no Roku. Currently I mostly stream my Riffs from rifftrax.com to my TV from my phone or tablet (air stream or connect to the Apple TV). Love that you’re working on this!

Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Xbox is something we can target. At the very least, you should still be able to play our videos through the web browser! Failing that, I highly recommend a Chromecast dongle as they are very cheap and very useful. (( use mine all the time, for the RiffTrax site as well as streaming apps like HBO and Showtime.) -Erik

I don't have cable, and rely on streaming through my Xbox. I didn't see any others mentioning that platform, so I wasn't sure if something like that is possible....but I wanted to throw out my suggestion, just in case!

I've been using the current Roku app instead of Chromecasting from my laptop. (In fact, I was going to write you, Erik, and as if it had achieved its final form because if not, I have notes. :) ) Glad to see it's going to be updated and you plan to incorporate Watchlists, and sorting for our libraries. I've looked at the Friends subscription and thought about it, but right now it's not easy to get a handle on how that would be an advantage. As you are well aware, searching through is a little cumbersome right now. I'll get on that form!

I would love an Apple TV app.

We can work with whatever really but would like to see it in the LG content store.
