Arcs are born with an outsized curiosity but their wanderings always bring them home again. It was the Arcs who preserved mortal knowledge through the Fallen Age, that time between the collapse of the great civilizations of Elves and Dwarves, and the first kingdoms of men. They preserved the arcaic tongue, magic spells, and the skill of writing.
Arcs have wandered far from their home for many centuries, and now the land of their origins calls to them. Many report receiving visions and visitations, but it could just as well be mass hysteria. Still, Arc-Home has never lost its mystic appeal, and a new emmigration appears more likely every year.

Or, by throwing out some of the flawed aspects of humans, he ended up with physically smaller people. But "children" works, too.
