I've dabbled a bit with tools like Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT, and the longer I've used them, the more I've come to realize those tools as they are now are fundamentally flawed in their own way, and I've grown to thoroughly dislike them for anything other than menial and low importance tasks for their unreliability and ultimately mediocre output. Top that off with some serious ethical issues regarding ownership of work, and that makes it an easy choice that I will not be adopting either in any way in my work on Light of my Life or future games. I'm actually quite saddened by the thought that at one point, we thought the future would be that machines would be doing the boring jobs freeing us up to take up poetry or painting, instead of the other way around.

Cheers, glad you're enjoying it. Wrt animations, probably not. First of all, animation is a true craft of its own, and one I am not skilled in. Indeed, most devs probably aren't, and that's why many of the animations out there you see are out of the box affairs created by a professional animator, that you can just plug your characters in and bang one out, so to say. It's very convenient for the creator, as it limits the amount of manual labor needed to create such a scene. However, in LomL, all intimate positions have been created by hand to fit the scene, characters, and situations best, as well as work for their bodies (none of which are really standard daz genesis-8 characters), and there's no out-of-the-box stuff anywhere. For various technical reasons it'd probably be a huge amount of work to fit some out of the box animation to those scenes, and some things will probably not work at all (thinking about things like the partial undress of character's outfits that happens in most of the scenes and is a pain to set up for still images, let alone animations).

From the artwork to the graphic style, the script, the plot and the characters, this game is a tour de force and equal or better than the best games I've seen anywhere. Cheers, and you're welcome. In the game itself, you can use the back button in the bottom menu(all versions) or pgup key or the mouse wheel (desktop) to roll back a little bit in time, but usually no more than a few minutes. Often it's enough to explore different dialog trees if you're so inclined, but otherwise it's mostly a matter of saving often I think.

Well I don't use McAffee so at least some of the problems aren't that. I was having the crashing problem using the 32bit version, but once I went to the regular version, that problem was resolved.

I think i can see how you are growing in this game. My opinion is that this is your best episode until now. Absolutely the best mix of drama, comedy and erotic parts, with a solid story. I mean i almost peed my pants at the ceremony part. But this episode is massive man. I had about 14 hours into it and i still have a feeling that i missed some. I mean rewinding answers and looking for different outcomes. I don't know if i suppose to do that. But i really like to get the most out of your work. I now see why it took this long to produce. Thanx for your hard work man. This game is epic.

Right. I'm getting reports that McAffee really doesn't like it (as well as other ren'py based VNs). The case I looked into was a heuristic (e.g. behavior, and not a virus signature) that was triggered by the game wanting to write data in AppData (which is where all ren'py games save their save games by default). I am convinced it's a false positive. For added fun, it also seems to hate the 64 bit version of the executable a lot more than the 32 bit version, tricking many users to use that version, and is it kinda crash prone, so I'm wondering if a lot of stability issues being reported now aren't just McAffee fussing over nothing. :(

This game and its wonderful characters is really, really dear to my heart. Would I love to have it released? You bet! Would I like it to be released no matter what it does to its core? You bet I don't! The reason I love this one so much is because all this work, love, sweat and tears and a ridicolous amount of time went into it. So why would I like to push for a release if that means I'd lose what I love? Having said that I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for bringing this piece of light to my life. It is absolutely adorable and will surely bring a lot of people joy (I just know it will for me) - not only with the upcoming chapter but with whatever might still be left to tell. Rock on Naughty!

This has been answered in several blogs posts already, but the short of it is: not really. I have a bit of story to tell in a chapter, and that and the complexity of the scenes dictate the size. That it takes longer to release if there's more to tell and produce I consider to be a technical issue, and I'm not prepared to start cutting down content I feel this chapter needs to be all it can be based on that consideration.

I'd love to. The problem is once I say anything, it's set in stone no matter how I phrase it. So if I now say (example only!) one month, someone will go out and announce it'll be released on date X, at 12 pm of that day, and I'll have angry mobs baying at the doors if it shifts for a few days. So, if I go conservative and say (ridiculous example) 9 months, I'll have a different mob with pitchforks because sure it can't take that amount of time. And of course, having given two completely random example values and said those were examples only, someone will now conclude it'll be out in the date exactly between those two, and take that as set in stone. Baying mobs is one side of the problem. The other is that, given a time frame, you lock down any option to rework anything that doesn't quite work, because there's a timeframe to ship, so wrap a ribbon around it and shove it out the door. Which is perfectly acceptable business practice, but I'm not running this as a business, or I'd be making a completely different game. I will give it all I have to make this game the best version of this game I can do, and cutting parts that don't fit an arbitrary deadline, even one I set myself, doesn't fit into that. So just a little more patience please. As soon as I can give a reasonably accurate timeframe, rest assured I will.

Sorry, guestimates become hard dates the moment I say them out loud. :D There's still this scene's final images and outro to do, and images one more non-lewd scene to wrap the chapter, then it's backtracking to process and put all images that were prepped for the previous bunch of scenes, script them, hook them up to the scene, and adjust dialog to get a nice flow. Then it's on to the postgame summary, a little bonus moment, testing, prepping builds, well, you get the idea. The real work is almost over, but almost is relative.

I am torn because I want more content sooner and because I am enjoying the characters and the dynamics between them so much, I don't want it to end. I am just hoping you can finish to your satisfaction and then get going with your next project, what ever it may be.

Heh, cheers. If we were to go into the business part, it's interesting to note that the conversion rate from players to supporters is really low. Well below one percent, maybe even lower than a tenth of a percent. I'm not really sure because I don't have solid player numbers. Likely, taking a much more aggressive stance on content would be one way to go. Paywalls, patreom-only unlockables, bonus scenes, DLC, and characters, stuff like that. But I really don't want to go there, I'd rather people have the completest possible experience playing it. Or perhaps a much stronger marketing effort. Relentless cross promo, adds, big social media presence, stuff like that. But it's not really my strong suit, and I don't feel justified taking time out for it and delivering a new chapter that much later even if I knew where to start. Then finally, like you say, short release cycles. Each release brings a jump in supporters and while that usually erodes after a month or two, three, if you can release monthly, you can probably keep riding those hikes up and up and up. But again, it fits really poorly with how I want to make LomL. Micro content drops are not how I feel it can best be enjoyed. So in the end, a lot of it comes from me being a bit of a suborn mule I guess, and that's fine. Steam is still tera incognita for me, I'm planning to release it there when I release chapter 7. For a big part, it's new markets that doesn't overlap with the F95/patreon based market, so it'll be interesting to see if it gets any traction at all there. Time will tell I guess. Wishlisting it on steam helps with visibility there though (for anyone interested: find the link in the pinned post).

Thank you Naughty for taking the time to share some insights of the struggles of production for this particular episode. Like you said, I felt that externalizing working parts might be difficult for reasons of the very unique style of LomL and I can easily sympathize with the idea that this could possibly endanger style and quality. Nobody would want that. In the end that will leave very few if any options in regards to speed up parts of the development. A more focused and tightend scope as you have described it sure seems like a feasible way but it brings its own dangers. Where you might win on the production side and be able to really have a new chapter available earlier, chances are that players might get short-changed on the feeling of really living through a wide story with actual characters. The little sideways are what really add to the flavor in the end. So all in all this could lead to changing one evil for the other with no chance of winning for anybody. What, in all honesty, really bothers me is what you wrote about the financial aspect. It is a real shame that you can't make a good living from developing this beautiful game. I was thinking why this could be the case. I know that there is a considerable amount of people who just love what you do, who enjoy this story and the wonderful characters you portray. Then again I'm not telling you anything new when I say that there are also people who are so exposed to the idea of playing a game where they don't interact with cloned barbies they have seen in countles VNs that they wouldn't even bother to play LomL for free. With the middleground between the two sides lie the biggest chances to increase any possible income. But that is the hard part: how to bring a lurker or free-loader to actually financially support you and this project? And this is were I think we are going full circle. In my experience games with regular releases within short intervals seem to draw in more supporters. How are popular platforms like Steam working out for a project like LomL? Is this anything that helps you generate more income and help you to at least pay off some of the hard work and dedication you pour into this development? Like I said I love this game and would really love to help where possible so I'm just throwing around random thoughts for the moment. I think that you have a solid core community that are pretty much in favor of what you are creating and would like to support you. So if you see any way that could work I hope you'll let us know. Some interesting points raised to be sure. I think one of the biggest problems here is one of scalability. The main bottleneck is still creating graphics, by which I don't mean rendering images, but setting up the scenes, poses, lighting, etc. But it is also a very specialized part. The tooling is complex, requirements are hard to externalize and describe, the style of LomL is specific and not generic. In short, it's not something anyone could easily jump into, and certainly not something to crowdsource. And keeping the work flowing and the produced assets consistent in quality and style will take a huge amount of time from my side as well, so the returns of scaling up are limited. And brings us to the financial picture, because support for LomL has been more or less at a stable level (and slowly declining if truth be told) for the past year or two, and once all taxes and levies have been dealt with it hovers just below UK minimum wage on a per hour basis, the last time I looked it up. From a personal perspective, that's no biggie. I love making this game and I'd be doing it without support even. But from a business perspective, there's not really a case to expand. So all in all, a lot of problems, and not much in the way of solutions. As to what that means for future releases, I'm not sure yet. Perhaps the next chapter will be a more concentrated, focused one with a tighter scope, and that will allow for a quicker turn around. It wasn't really an option for this chapter as there were a number of events to include and they dictated the scope for this one. But it'll be hard to tell until I get round to scoping out the next chapter, which requires this chapter to be shipped first.

I've been looking at the latest update on Chapter 7 progress (October 12) and with still a number of scenes to do I was wondering if a release until years end is at all possible or if this will be the first year without a completely new episode of LomL (my final save outside the beta is from December 8, 21). I am still standing strong for quality over quantity, don't get me wrong. What I fear though is that with a gap in releases of 12+ months it might be hard to keep a momentum - both for players but also economically for yourself. Do you have any ideas how to tackle this going forward with upcoming episodes past chapter 7? What can be done from our side to possibly help you along the journey and what really are the biggest bottlenecks? Maybe there are ideas to help circumvent some of them within the community? Again: this is not a post to complain but rather to see what can be done to help you (and all of us as consumers in the end) towards a smoother progression.

Development time for chapters is pretty long at this time, due to the sheer amount of work and content that goes into making one, but you can see weekly progress updates on this post.
