A Cosmic Rendition: Chapter 28
Added 2025-01-21 16:30:02 +0000 UTCIt seemed as if the Earth itself groaned in torment as the ground buckled, and the rising hum of the World Engine echoed in the distance. Dust and debris shot high in the sky as a result of the intensifying gravitational fields, swirling around Peter and Gwen as they hurriedly swung along the skyscrapers to get as far away as possible. The others were hard at work, analyzing the situation at hand, and nothing was more dominant in their minds than shock.
Hundreds of miles away in the state of Kansas, the battle had reached its fever pitch as Steve and Bruce tried whatever they could to overpower Zod, who had emerged entirely unscathed from the heavy artillery blow the Air Force had rained down on them.
“What in God’s name is he!?” Captain America’s voice was strained as he pushed himself up, his eyes wide with alarm.
Batman grunted as he struggled to regain their footing.
“Someone beyond our ability to deal with right now, that’s for sure,” he replied, frustrated.
Like a demon from a firestorm, Zod walked out of the explosions, entirely unscathed. As Batman and Captain America watched him with bated breaths, a crackle broke through the comms, the sound cracking initially but soon becoming clear.
“Stark?”
“Cap, Wayne, shit’s hit the fan,” Tony’s voice was laced with a mixture of disbelief and urgent concern.
“What are you talking about?”
“Wayne, pull up the screen,” Tony instructed, and as they watched, their eyes widened.
"What in God's name…?" Captain America whispered, his eyes wide with alarm as he stared at the monstrous device anchoring itself to the ruined cityscape.
Batman, ever the pragmatist, was already analyzing the unfolding catastrophe. "That's it," he stated grimly, his cowl obscuring his expression, but the tension in his voice was palpable. "That's what Zod meant."
"Cap? Wayne? You reading me? That thing just sprouted out of the ground like some unholy metal flower!"
"Stark? We see it. It's… bad. Really bad."
"Bad doesn't even begin to cover it, Cap," Tony retorted, the urgency in his voice even higher than before. "JARVIS is spitting out readings I don't want to believe. Massive gravitational anomalies, tectonic shifts… That thing is terraforming Earth. Reshaping the planet!"
Batman’s head snapped up, his attention immediately drawn to this new information. He pushed himself closer to Steve, his focus shifting from Zod in the distance to the screen in earnest.
"Terraforming? What are the implications?"
Before Tony could answer, JARVIS’s synthesized voice cut in, precise and chilling. "The device is designed to alter Earth's atmosphere and geological composition, presumably to match Krypton's. The process is already underway. Irreversible damage to the planet is projected within the hour if the device remains operational."
The information hit Captain America like a physical blow. He exchanged a horrified look with Batman. "An hour? To change the entire planet?"
Across the battlefield, while dodging another searing blast of heat vision, Steve relayed the chilling news. "Peggy? We just got intel from Stark. Zod’s activated a machine… and it’s not just a weapon. It’s designed to turn Earth into another Krypton. We have maybe an hour before the damage is irreversible."
A collective gasp of shock echoed through the comms.
"You’re kidding me," Yelena’s voice was tight with disbelief.
"That explains the atmospheric disruption this woman was talking about," Captain Carter said grimly, her voice strained as she deflected a brutal strike from Faora who looked like she could go on like this for days. "We need to take that thing down."
"Easier said than done," Tony interjected, a hint of desperation creeping into his tone. "JARVIS says its energy output is off the charts. Trying to directly attack it could trigger a catastrophic feedback loop. Planetary-scale catastrophic."
Batman’s analytical mind was already working, processing the new data Tony was sending him. "Stark, can you provide me with the exact schematics and energy signatures JARVIS is detecting? I need to analyze its vulnerabilities."
"Uploading everything now, Bats," Tony replied. "But fair warning, it looks like something out of a sci-fi nightmare. No conventional weaknesses that I can see."
Zod, who had been momentarily sidelined by their communications, let out a roar as he charged. He lunged at Steve whose eyes widened at the sheer speed, his fist like a sledgehammer aimed at his head.
Steve raised his shield to intercept, and although the impact reverberated through his arm, he was flung back where he collided with a destroyed building. He let out a grunt as he fell, coughing up blood.
Meanwhile, Batman’s focus was divided between Zod and the data flooding his cowl's display. The sheer scale of the World Engine's operation was staggering. He felt a chill crawl down his spine. This wasn't just about stopping an invasion; it was about saving the very planet. "Stark, that beam connecting the two components… what's its function?" He asked, sending another round of blasts at Zod which did nothing but irritate him.
"Primary energy conduit," JARVIS responded instantly. "It's channeling the energy necessary for the terraforming process. Severing it might disrupt the engine, but as I said, the risk of detonation is significant."
"Significant, but not impossible to mitigate," Batman muttered, already formulating strategies as Zod turned his attention back to Captain America who spat out even more blood as he rejoined the fight.
It was a desperate battle against overwhelming power. Captain America fought with his usual grit and strategic brilliance, using his shield to deflect Zod's attacks and create openings. Meanwhile, Batman, despite his injuries, moved with a calculated precision, deploying smoke pellets and sonic emitters to disorient the Kryptonian.
"This thing… it’s got to be making them stronger," Peggy grunted, barely managing to parry another of Faora's lightning-fast strikes. "I can feel it."
"The altered atmosphere," JARVIS confirmed. "As the World Engine continues its process, the atmospheric composition will increasingly favor Kryptonian physiology, granting them enhanced strength and resilience."
Zod, sensing the shift in his favor, pressed his attack with renewed ferocity. He swatted away Steve’s shield like it was a child’s toy and landed a brutal kick to his chest, sending him sprawling. He then turned his attention to Batman, who was attempting to deploy another cryo-pellet. Zod moved with blinding speed, snatching the device out of his hand and crushing it into dust.
"Your tricks bore me, human," Zod snarled, his eyes blazing with contempt. He grabbed Batman by the throat, lifting him off the ground.
Captain America, despite the pain searing through his ribs, scrambled to his feet. "Let him go, Zod!"
Zod simply laughed, and it was a harsh, grating sound. "Why should I? Your resistance is broken. The World Engine has begun its work. Soon, this world will be reborn in Krypton’s image, and you… you will be nothing but a footnote in its history."
With a powerful throw, Zod hurled Batman aside like a discarded ragdoll. The Dark Knight crashed heavily against a pile of rubble, a groan escaping his lips. Steve knew they were losing. The World Engine was tipping the scales, making Zod and his forces stronger while slowly draining their own reserves.
Suddenly, Zod straightened, his head cocked as if listening to something. A flicker of what might have been satisfaction crossed his face. "The acquisition teams have secured the perimeter. It is time." He turned to Faora and Nam-Ek, his voice now filled with a cold, commanding authority. "Return to the Black Zero. We will oversee the final stages of the transition from orbit."
Faora and Nam-Ek, despite their clear enjoyment of the fight, immediately obeyed. With impossible speed, they disengaged from their respective opponents, leaving Captain Carter and the other women panting and frustrated.
"They're retreating?" Natasha asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "Why now?"
"Because the machine is doing their work for them," Captain America said grimly, watching Zod’s lieutenants vanish into the smoky haze.
Zod turned his back on the battered heroes in a gesture of supreme arrogance. He began to stride towards the location where his ship had landed, the ground trembling with each step.
Just as he reached the crest of a small rise, a sonic boom ripped through the sky, followed by a streak of red and blue that descended with the force of a meteor. Zod and his soldiers stopped, their heads raised high as they stared at none other than Superman who landed between them and the Black Zero, the impact cratering the ground and sending a shockwave that buffeted the remaining heroes. Lois Lane, looking determined and slightly breathless, climbed off and landed gracefully beside him.
"Zod," Superman’s voice resonated with power and righteous anger.
Zod stopped in his tracks, a look of surprise, quickly masked by fury, flashing across his face. "Kal-El. I should have known you would not stay away from this."
"This isn't your world to take, Zod," Superman declared, his eyes blazing with heat.
"It is my duty to restore what was lost!" Zod retorted, his voice filled with the conviction of his beliefs. "To rebuild Krypton!"
"Not by destroying another world," Superman countered with a glare. His stance was unwavering as he readied himself, his fist clenching and unclenching. He glanced briefly at the battered figures of Captain America and Batman, and his jaw clenched firmly.
Superman’s arrival was like a shot of adrenaline to the exhausted heroes. Hope, which had been dwindling under the weight of the Kryptonians and the World Engine's threat, flickered back to life.
"It's Dad!" Yelena breathed, a hint of relief in her voice.
"Looks like the old man finally decided to get involved," Natasha quipped, a wry smile playing on her lips.
Captain Carter gripped her sword tighter, her weariness momentarily forgotten. "Let's not make him have all the fun."
A tense silence descended over the battlefield as Superman and Zod faced off. Then, with a roar, Superman lunged, his speed a blur. Zod met him head-on, their fists clashing with a roar that echoed around them like thunder. The sonic boom sent everyone skidding back and they all looked up.
The two Kryptonians became streaks of motion, their battle a whirlwind of impossible speed and earth-shattering power. They traded blows that would have pulverized mountains, each impact sending shockwaves rippling through the already devastated landscape.
"You cannot stop what is inevitable, Kal-El!" Zod bellowed, smashing Superman through the remains of a concrete wall.
Superman burst through the debris, unfazed. "I will always stand against tyranny, Zod!" He unleashed a powerful heat vision blast, forcing Zod to shield his eyes.
Re-energized by Superman’s arrival, the other heroes surged forward, targeting Faora and Nam-Ek, who were attempting to provide cover for Zod.
"Alright, ladies," Captain Carter yelled, her voice filled with renewed vigor. "Round two! Let's show these arrogant asswipes what we're made of!"
“Language, Peggy,” Yelena teased as she surged forward.
Rolling her eyes, Peggy charged Faora again, her vibranium sword singing as it clashed against the Kryptonian's blade. Selina, agile as ever, weaved through the chaos, her whip cracking and distracting the warrior woman at opportune moments.
Yelena and Natasha, working in perfect sync, unleashed a barrage of Widow’s Bites and electrified gauntlet strikes, forcing Nam-Ek to focus on multiple threats.
"Still think we're just insects?" Natasha snarled, landing a powerful kick to Nam-Ek's knee.
"Worthless gnats!" Nam-Ek roared in frustration, swatting at them with his immense hands. He was clearly feeling the effects of the prolonged battle, his movements less fluid than before. However, he was still too much for the two women who could still not get any critical hits in.
Meanwhile, Lois, without hesitation, joined Natasha and Yelena, her own enhanced abilities evident as she moved with a speed and agility that mirrored theirs. She unleashed a flurry of powerful punches and kicks, surprising even the seasoned Black Widow and White Widow with her ferocity.
"Impressive, Lane," Natasha said with a grin as they fought back-to-back.
"Years of dodging bullets and recent alien invasions," Lois quipped, landing a solid uppercut on an approaching Kryptonian soldier.
Despite their renewed efforts, Zod’s forces were still formidable. Their enhanced strength and speed, combined with their advanced weaponry, kept the heroes on the defensive.
"Damn it!" Peggy exclaimed, narrowly avoiding a heat vision blast from Faora. "They're still too strong!"
"We have to keep them busy," Captain America yelled, deflecting a barrage of energy blasts from several Kryptonian soldiers. "Buy Kent time!"
The battle raged on, a chaotic mix of superhuman strength, advanced technology, and sheer determination. Superman and Zod continued their brutal confrontation, their clashes shaking the very air around them. They traded blows that sent shockwaves through the ruins, their dialogue punctuated by the thunder of their impacts.
"You fight for a world that rejected you, Kal-El!" Zod roared, smashing Superman through the wreckage of a bus.
Superman erupted from the debris, his eyes burning with fierce resolve. "I fight for the world that gave me a home, Zod! A world you are trying to destroy!"
With a furious cry, Superman charged again, meeting Zod’s attack head-on. Their fists collided with the force of a supernova, the resulting explosion of energy throwing everyone nearby off their feet. The ground beneath them cracked and splintered, the air thick with dust and the raw power of their conflict.
The shockwave from Superman and Zod’s collision ripped through the ravaged landscape. Buildings that had somehow remained standing groaned and shuddered, some finally succumbing to the force and collapsing in plumes of dust and debris. The air crackled with residual energy, making the hairs on the heroes’ arms stand on end.
In the epicenter of the blast, a crater smoldered, the ground blackened and fused. Superman and Zod were momentarily separated, both reeling from the impact. Superman, his red cape tattered in places, shook his head, his eyes blazing with undiminished resolve. Zod, however, seemed barely fazed, a primal grin spreading across his face.
"Impressive, Kal-El," Zod’s voice echoed through the ruins. "But your sentimentality weakens you."
Miles away from the city, in the sterile confines of a military command center, Thaddeus Ross watched the unfolding catastrophe on a bank of monitors, his expression grim. Alexander Pierce stood beside him, his face impassive and his eyes sharp and calculating.
“The Kryptonian is proving to be a formidable adversary,” Pierce observed, his tone detached. “Casualty projections are… substantial.”
Ross grunted, his gaze fixed on the image of Superman and Zod locked in combat. “That ‘formidable adversary’ is also our best chance of taking out Zod, and this machine. Let them weaken each other.”
“The collateral damage?” Pierce inquired, his voice devoid of any real concern.
Ross shrugged, his eyes never leaving the screen. “Acceptable. We’ll rebuild. What matters is eliminating the extraterrestrial threat.” A grim smile touched his lips. “And if those vigilantes happen to get caught in the crossfire… so much the better. One less headache.”
Pierce offered a curt nod, his own agenda subtly aligned with Ross’s ruthless pragmatism. The chaos presented an opportunity, a chance to reshape the world order, and the deaths of a few enhanced individuals were a small price to pay.
On the ground, the fight between the heroes and Zod’s remaining forces intensified. Captain Carter, her sword stained with grime but her spirit unbroken, traded blow after brutal blow with Faora. The Kryptonian warrior, her initial arrogance slightly diminished by the prolonged fight, fought with a focused intensity, her movements still lightning fast and deadly.
"You fight with courage, human," Faora conceded, her voice strained as she deflected Peggy’s relentless assault. "But courage is no match for Kryptonian might."
"Maybe not," Peggy grunted, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "But it buys us time." She knew they couldn’t win a straight-up fight against the enhanced Kryptonians, but their goal was to keep them occupied, to give Superman a chance.
Natasha and Yelena, working in their signature fluid tandem, continued their relentless assault on Nam-Ek. They darted around the giant, their strikes precise and targeted, exploiting every slight opening. Lois joined their dance of death, her agility allowing her to match their pace and deliver powerful blows that when combined with theirs, even Nam-Ek couldn’t completely ignore.
"He's still like hitting a brick wall!" Yelena exclaimed, wincing as Nam-Ek’s massive hand swiped close, the wind from its passage stinging her face.
"Keep moving, keep hitting!" Natasha yelled back, her focus unwavering. "He might be strong, but he's not invulnerable."
Selina, ever the opportunist, used the chaos to her advantage. She swung from collapsing structures, her whip lashing out to trip and disorient the Kryptonian giant. Her agility and unpredictable movements made her a frustratingly elusive target for the lumbering Nam-Ek.
"Having fun, big guy?" she taunted, landing a kick to the back of his knee before gracefully leaping away.
Batman, his movements hampered by his earlier injuries, was still determined. He deployed a series of sonic batarangs, the high-frequency bursts causing visible pain and disorientation to the nearby Kryptonian soldiers. He moved with a grim efficiency, taking down the alien soldiers with calculated strikes and tactical maneuvers, his focus shifting between the grunts and the larger threat of the World Engine.
The World Engine continued its terrifying work, the gravitational distortions intensifying. Chunks of the ruined city were being lifted into the swirling vortex of energy above, compressed and then violently expelled, crashing back to the ground with earth-shattering force. The sky was a swirling canvas of unnatural colors, the air thick and heavy, making it harder to breathe.
Miles away, in the makeshift headquarters of Tony Stark’s team, the atmosphere was one of frantic urgency. Tony, Rhodey, and Diana stared at the World Engine, their faces etched with worry and frustration.
"JARVIS, give me another analysis of that energy beam," Tony barked, pacing restlessly. "There has to be a way to disrupt it without blowing half the planet to kingdom come."
"Analyzing, sir," JARVIS responded, his synthesized voice tinged with a hint of what could almost be interpreted as stress. "The energy signature is proving… resilient. Any direct counter-frequency is likely to be absorbed and amplified, potentially accelerating the terraforming process."
"So, we’re damned if we do, damned if we don’t?" Rhodey muttered, running a hand over his face.
Diana, her expression grim, pointed to a section of the World Engine. "What about these conduits here? They seem to be channeling a significant amount of energy to the primary beam."
"Possible points of vulnerability," Tony conceded, zooming in on the indicated area. "But they’re heavily shielded. We’d need a concentrated energy blast that can bypass those defenses without triggering a chain reaction. Precise and Powerful."
Suddenly, a cry of pain pierced through the comms. It was Captain Carter.
"I'm hit!" she gasped, her voice strained. "Damn it… they’re getting stronger!"
Faora pressed her advantage, her movements a blur as she rained down a series of brutal strikes on the downed Captain. Her sword was knocked aside, and a searing blast of heat vision grazed her shoulder, the smell of burning fabric and flesh filling the air.
"Peggy!" Captain America yelled, his voice filled with alarm, momentarily distracted from his own fight against a group of Kryptonian soldiers.
Just as Faora was about to deliver the finishing blow, a whip cracked around her arm, yanking her back. Selina, despite the size difference, stood defiantly between the injured Captain Carter and the Kryptonian warrior.
"Looking a little singed there, Captain," Selina quipped, her voice unwavering despite the clear danger.
Faora snarled, her attention shifting to the new threat. "Insects… always so persistent."
The near-defeat of Captain Carter served as a stark reminder of the overwhelming power of the Kryptonians. They were adapting, their strength growing as the World Engine continued its work.
Meanwhile, the battle between Superman and Zod raged with undiminished fury. They traded blows that shook the very foundations of the ruined city, their ideologies clashing as fiercely as their fists.
"You cling to the past, Kal-El!" Zod roared, smashing Superman through the skeletal remains of a skyscraper. "Krypton can be reborn! This world is a sacrifice worth making!"
Superman erupted from the rubble, his eyes burning with righteous fury. "There are always other ways, Zod! You don't have to destroy to create!"
"Sentimentality will be your undoing!" Zod countered, unleashing a devastating heat vision blast that Superman barely managed to deflect.
"And your ruthlessness will be yours!" Superman retorted, his voice echoing with conviction. He flew at Zod, the two Kryptonians colliding with a force that sent shockwaves rippling outwards.
Suddenly, Zod grabbed Superman, his grip like iron, and with a surge of unnatural strength, hurled him towards one of the military tanks. Superman smashed against the base of the machine, the impact jarring him to his core. The tank exploded upon impact, sending him skidding along the debris-laden ground as he left a trail of scorch marks where his body met the destroyed surface.
Zod landed before him, his eyes blazing with triumph. "See, Kal-El? Resistance is futile. The future has arrived."
Just as Zod raised his fist for the final blow, a concentrated beam of energy struck him in the back, sending him staggering. Batman, having recovered from his earlier pummeling, had deployed a weaponized shard, its brilliant blue glow a stark contrast against the ruined cityscape.
"He's not alone," Batman growled, his voice hoarse but defiant.
Enraged, Zod turned his attention to the Dark Knight, but before he could retaliate, Captain America, his face bruised and bloodied, slammed his shield into Zod’s side, knocking him off balance. The other heroes, seeing their chance, pressed their attack with renewed vigor.
But it was a desperate holding action. The World Engine hummed louder, the sky darkening with an unnatural storm. Zod, despite the combined efforts of his opponents, was still a force of nature, his power amplified by the changing atmosphere. He swatted aside attacks, unleashed devastating heat vision blasts, and moved with a speed that seemed to defy human perception.
"Enough!" Zod bellowed, his voice a thunderclap. He unleashed a shockwave of pure energy, throwing the heroes back like ragdolls. He stood amidst the devastation, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a fanatical intensity. "You cannot stop what is coming. Krypton will rise again!"
The raw power of Zod’s outburst left the heroes scattered, coughing in the dust and struggling to regain their footing. Captain America’s shield lay a few feet away, dirty and scorched. Batman pushed himself up against a pile of rubble, a trickle of blood escaping from under his cowl. Superman, who had borne the brunt of Zod’s final attack, lay groaning amidst the wreckage of the tank.
Zod, chest heaving, surveyed the battered forms before him, a cruel smirk of satisfaction twisting his lips. “Fools. Did you truly believe you could stand against Krypton’s destiny?” He raised his head, his eyes closed as if having his gaze fixed on the swirling vortex above, where he envisioned the World Engine’s oppressive hum vibrating through the very ground. “The transformation has begun in earnest. Soon, this world will be ours.”
Suddenly, a blinding golden streak tore through the turbulent sky, followed moments later by a wave of pure energy that slammed into Zod with the force of a runaway train. He barely had a moment to react and was sent hurtling backwards, crashing through the remnants of a brick wall.
Shortly after, a second figure descended, surrounded by a shimmering aura of light, landing with a soft thud beside Captain America.
“Sorry we’re late,” a confident voice said.
Captain America looked up, his eyes widening in surprise. Standing before him was a woman with glowing hands, radiating an almost palpable energy. He’d never seen her before.
Simultaneously, a guttural roar echoed through the battlefield, shaking the very ground. A massive, green figure smashed through the rubble where Zod had landed, bellowing with rage.
“Banner is here as well!” Yelena exclaimed.
The Hulk roared, pounding his chest with a fist the size of a small car.
Superman pushed himself up, blinking in surprise. He recognized the woman who had landed beside Steve. “Carol? Maria? Finally decided to join in, eh?”
Captain Marvel, her eyes blazing with cosmic energy, offered a wry smile. “Heard you were having a bit more trouble, Kal.”
Maria Rambeau, her form crackling with photonic energy, nodded. “Figured we’d finally lend a hand.”
Confusion rippled through the comms.
“Cap? Who are those guys?” Tony asked, his voice filled with curiosity. “And what the hell is Banner doing there?”
“No time for introductions,” Superman said urgently, his gaze fixed on Zod, who was slowly rising to his feet, his face contorted with fury. “Just… trust me.”
Zod’s eyes narrowed, locking onto the two new arrivals. “You’re not Kryptonians, are you?” he snarled, his voice filled with suspicion.
“Not quite,” Carol Danvers replied, her voice radiating power. She exchanged a brief glance with Maria who gave her a firm nod.
“Hulk smash puny tin man!” the Hulk roared, leaping towards Zod with incredible speed.
The battle erupted anew, but with a dramatically altered dynamic. Captain Marvel and Maria Rambeau moved with blinding speed, intercepting Faora and Nam-Ek, who were readying to attack once again.
“You’ve caused enough trouble,” Carol declared, her fists crackling with energy as she met Faora’s charge head-on.
Maria, in a blur of photonic light, engaged Nam-Ek, her energy blasts slamming into the giant, forcing him to stumble back. The women who had been struggling against the Kryptonian duo found themselves with much-needed backup.
“Whoa,” Yelena breathed, watching Maria effortlessly deflect one of Nam-Ek’s powerful blows with a wave of energy.
“Finally, some decent backup,” Selina quipped, a grin spreading across her face as she and Captain Carter joined Captain Marvel in her assault on Faora.
Meanwhile, the Hulk’s raw power crashed against Zod’s Kryptonian strength. Their blows shook the very ground, creating shockwaves that rippled outwards. Superman, Captain America, and Batman, seeing an opening, joined the fray, targeting Zod with a flurry of attacks.
Steve’s shield slammed into Zod’s jaw, followed by a precise kick from Batman. Superman unleashed a searing blast of heat vision, forcing Zod to swerve out of the way. The combined assault was relentless, pushing Zod onto the defensive for the first time in the battle.
“They’re actually holding him!” Pierce exclaimed in disbelief, watching the scene unfold on the monitors.
“Those new guys are something else,” Ross muttered. “That’s not good news at all.”
The battle raged on in a display of superhuman strength and alien power. The Air Force had long given up, with only the few fighters on the ground battling against the Kryptonian forces. A perimeter had been set up miles away, and although it had not been touched yet, there had been sighs that the battleground would expand. The entire resources of the defense were focused on how to deal with the World Engine, with no success whatsoever.
On the battlefield, Maria Rambeau and Captain Marvel fought with a synergy born of long partnership, their energy blasts and physical strikes helping the rest of the women in keeping Faora and Nam-Ek constantly on the defensive. The Hulk’s sheer brute force kept Zod occupied, his unpredictable nature allowing the other heroes to land blows they couldn't manage before.
“This world… it is not yours to conquer!” Superman roared, landing a powerful right hook that sent Zod staggering.
Zod, however, was far from defeated. He roared in frustration, unleashing a wave of heat vision that forced the heroes to scatter. He lashed out with blinding speed, catching the Hulk with a powerful punch that sent the behemoth stumbling back.
“Enough of this charade!” Zod bellowed, his voice amplified by the growing atmospheric changes. “The transition is imminent! Return to the Black Zero!”
Faora and Nam-Ek, despite their clear desire to continue fighting, immediately disengaged. With bursts of super-speed, they began to retreat.
“Hey! Get back here, you bastards!” Yelena yelled, lunging after them, only to be pulled back by Maria.
“Let them go,” Maria said, her voice firm. “The big one’s the priority.”
Zod turned to follow his lieutenants, a flicker of something akin to desperation in his eyes. The World Engine's humming intensified, the ground vibrating with increasing urgency.
But just as he shot into the air with a powerful sonic boom, a red and blue blur intercepted him. Superman tackled Zod mid-flight, the two Kryptonians plummeting back towards the ground with earth-shattering force. They crashed into a ruined building, the impact sending debris flying in all directions.
The other Kryptonians paused, hovering in the air, watching with a mixture of apprehension and fury. Faora’s eyes narrowed, her expression a mask of rage.
Superman pinned Zod to the ground, the fight becoming a brutal, close-quarters struggle. Zod clawed and punched, his eyes blazing with hatred.
"Father," Clark began, his voice even and respectful, “ There's something I want to discuss."
The familiar shimmer of his father's projection solidified in the crystalline chamber of his mindscape just after Zod left him. "I see you have learned to harness this power for yourself. What's on your mind?"
Clark took a breath, choosing his words carefully. "It's about the Codex. I've learned some things recently, and I wanted to understand your perspective."
Jor-El nodded slowly, his gaze steady. "I understand. Please, ask what you will."
"Why wasn't I told about it sooner?" Clark inquired, keeping his tone neutral. "It was difficult believing I was the only one, the last of Krypton. Discovering that the means to restore our people existed, well… it changes things."
"Our intention was never to deceive you, Kal-El," Jor-El responded, his digital features conveying a sense of sincerity. "We believed it paramount for you to first integrate with humanity, to learn their values, their capacity for both great good and great folly."
"I appreciate that," Clark interjected gently, holding up a hand slightly, "but I'm struggling with the timing. Knowing that possibility existed… it feels like a significant piece of my history was withheld. Especially considering I learned about it from General Zod."
Jor-El’s expression remained thoughtful. "Zod's perspective, while understandable from his own deeply ingrained programming, is… limited. We feared that if you were aware of the Codex without the grounding of your human experience, the temptation to simply recreate Krypton as it was would be overwhelming. A Krypton that, as I've explained, carried the seeds of its own destruction."
"But wouldn't any Kryptonian society be better than none?" Clark pressed, his voice earnest. "Surely even with flaws, there would be a chance for growth, for learning from past mistakes."
"Perhaps," Jor-El conceded, "but consider the example of Zod himself. He is a product of the very system that failed. His genetic destiny was to be a warrior, and even with the opportunity to rebuild, his instinct is conquest, not cooperation. He could have sought a peaceful resolution, searched for another habitable world, even attempted to negotiate asylum here. But his understanding of the world is filtered through the lens of a soldier."
Jor-El moved closer, his projected form gliding effortlessly across the crystalline floor. "He doesn't approach this situation with the mind of a diplomat, an explorer, or a politician. He acts as a warrior, because that is all he was ever meant to be. While my own approach, as a scientist, would have differed in methodology, the fundamental risk remained: we would be reintroducing a society potentially bound by the very constraints that led to our downfall. We believed you, Kal-El, raised with the values of Earth, could forge a different path, a better future, should the opportunity ever arise."
Clark listened intently, his brow furrowed in contemplation. "But you faced Zod, Father. To protect Mother and me. You, a scientist, bested a genetically engineered general. You overcame the limitations of your intended role. Why couldn't you have had faith in that potential for others?"
Jor-El paused, his gaze drifting into the distance, seemingly lost in reflection. "That is a valid point, Kal-El," he admitted, his voice softer now, tinged with a hint of melancholy. "Perhaps, in the face of such direct and personal threat, a strength, a resolve emerged that I had not fully acknowledged within myself, or within our people. The instinct to protect those we love can be a powerful catalyst." He turned back to Clark, his expression one of quiet acceptance. "However, that realization is now academic. I am gone, Kal-El. Regrets, while perhaps instructive, cannot alter the past."
Clark offered a small, understanding smile, though a trace of sadness lingered in his eyes. "No, they can't. It won't bring back the billions I believed were lost. So, aside from Zod's followers, it seems I truly am on my own in that regard."
"But you are not truly alone, are you?" Jor-El countered gently. "You have built a life here, forged connections, found love and friendship. You have a family on this world, Kal-El. And you, Clark," he said, using his Earth name with a tender affection, "you are a son of both worlds. Never underestimate the strength and value of the bonds you have formed here."
Clark met his father's gaze, a sense of peace settling within him. The questions still lingered, but the sharp edges of resentment had softened. He understood the motivations, even if the execution had caused him pain. He saw the love, the hope for a better future, embedded in his parents' difficult choices.
"I understand, Father," Clark said finally, a genuine warmth in his voice. "Thank you for explaining."
Jor-El smiled, a gentle, paternal expression. "You are welcome, Kal-El."
“You cannot stop it, Kal-El!” Zod gasped, his voice strained. “Krypton will live again!”
Superman’s face was grim, his resolve etched in every line. He remembered the faces of the people he’d saved, the fear in their eyes, and the hope he represented. He remembered the warmth of the sun on his skin, the smell of the earth after the rain, and the wonders of nature he’d witnessed on Earth.
“Maybe,” Superman said, his voice low and determined, “but you won’t be around to see it. That’s the least I can do if we’re doomed.”
With a surge of unimaginable strength, Superman locked his hands around Zod’s neck. Zod’s eyes widened in shock, his hands clawing at Superman’s grip. He thrashed and struggled, but Superman’s grip was unbreakable. The life slowly drained from Zod’s eyes as Superman held on, the silence broken only by the labored breathing of the exhausted heroes and the ominous hum of the ship.
Finally, Zod’s body went limp. Superman released his grip, and Zod’s lifeless form slumped to the ground. A heavy silence fell over the battlefield, broken only by the distant roar of the retreating Kryptonian ship.
Faora and the remaining Kryptonian soldiers watched in stunned silence before finally turning and rocketing away, disappearing into the turbulent sky.
Slowly, everyone regrouped, standing silently as they stared at Zod’s body, a mixture of relief and grim satisfaction washing over them.
“Well,” Tony said over the comms, a hint of dark humor in his voice. “That’s one way to end an argument.”
The adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a chilling realization. The threat of Zod was gone, but the World Engine remained.
“We need to focus on that thing,” Batman said, his voice grim, his eyes fixated on the monstrous device displayed on the screen. “It’s still operational.”
“Clark! Your father… he told me how to stop it,” Lois said, her voice resolute as she rushed forward. All eyes turned to her.
“What did he say?” Superman asked urgently.
“He said… to counter its terraforming process, we need to create a singularity,” Lois explained, her voice gaining confidence as she spoke. “A concentrated point of infinite gravity that would essentially suck the engine, and anything around it, out of our dimension. He called it the Phantom Zone.”
A stunned silence followed her words. “A singularity?” Bruce Banner echoed, having transformed back, with his brow furrowed. “That’s… incredibly dangerous. And how exactly do we create one?”
“It requires a massive amount of focused energy, channeled in a very specific way,” Lois continued. “Your father told me to use the Phantom Drive in your ship.”
“I see,” Clark muttered, thoughtful.
“Can someone explain?” Tony asked over the comms, prompting Clark to elaborate how the plan would work.
“And that means this ship of your will be sucked in too?”
Clark remained silent, and that was enough of an answer.
“As I thought,” Tony replied. “Well, JARVIS might have something else for you. He’s been hard at work while my suit’s at what? 10 percent now. JARV?”
“A singularity could be created with a combination of unique energy signatures if they overload the Kryptonian systems, sir,” JARVIS’ mechanical voice resonated over the comms. “By estimates, a combination of Kryptonian energy, cosmic energy… and something akin to pure divine power like energy blasts from Madame Kent’s bracelets would get it done.”
Understanding dawned on Superman’s face. He looked at Carol, who nodded slowly. “Diana.”
“On it,” Diana replied over the comms, a determined glint in her eyes as she gave Tony a firm nod.
“Alright, listen up,” Captain America continued, his voice taking on a commanding tone. “We’re on a clock here. We’ll make haste for their spaceship where Stark and the others are. You three get to the Indian Ocean. That machine is changing our planet by the second. Let’s move, people!”
Clark, Carol, and Maria all nodded at Steve as a flurry of activity followed. Iron Man, War Machine, Spider-Man, and Spider-Woman took to the skies, heading towards the location where the Black Zero had landed while Wonder Woman began her journey south. Captain America, Batman, Bruce Banner, and the others piled into the Quinjet with Zod’s body, its engines roaring to life as it lifted off.
Superman turned to Captain Marvel and Maria. “Ready?”
“Born ready,” Carol replied, a confident smirk on her face.
“Let’s do this,” Maria added, her body shimmering with photonic energy.
With a nod, Superman launched himself into the air, followed closely by Captain Marvel and Maria Rambeau. They streaked across the sky, leaving the ravaged battlefield behind, their destination the churning waters of the Indian Ocean.
