That was ink on Lady Cowper's arm, not bruises, (but I wouldn't put it past him)... The dance seemed awkward because they were definitely talking to each other but also both paying attention to other things going on around them and they kept stepping on each other's toes from being distracted. Plus he's talking about his writing, while she's just given up her own writing and is suggesting she edit for him, (so she can be involved in some way), but he wants to do it on his own. They're both annoyed/frustrated about Whistledown/Cressida for different reasons.
