Rey and Luke

There's kind of a funny story behind his one. It's another sketch from Grand Rapids Comic Con and it was kind of a commissions, but also kinda not. See, on Saturday, this dude came up to me and started talking to me about my commissions. Asked about my prices, how long it usually took me. All the usual stuff. He even told me what he wanted, a sketch of Rey and old Luke Skywalker. Awesome. Finally, he says he'll come back the next day to commission me. That seemed a bit odd to me. Like, why not commission me now and pick it up tomorrow? As a general rule, giving artist more time, not to mention the chance to work on a piece in a more comfortable environment compared to a busy con floor, is only going to lead to a better drawing, right? Heck, I've personally waited until the end of the day to commission some artist just so that I can get that extra over-night magic.

So, I decided to take a risk and just draw the sketch anyway to have ready for when he, hopefully, came back the next day. I know, I know. But I had this really clear idea in my head, and I really wanted to do it, and I knew I wouldn't be able to do it justice rushing it out in an hour on the last day of a con. And, hey, worst case scenario I'd still have this cool Rey and Luke drawing. 

Well, guess what. I now have this cool Rey and Luke drawing.

Yeah, the guy never came back. I was disappointed, but not entirely surprised. If I had a dollar for every person who was going to come back to buy something later and then never did, I wouldn't have that moment at nearly every con where I have an existential crisis wondering if I can really justify still doing cons and if I should give up trying to be a professional artist. But, for real, though, I really am quite pleased with how this one turned out. I'm almost certain to return to this one to give it some color. And, hey, I've been wanted to do another sketch book for a while, so I can just look at this as another page for that.
