Billy's ears twitch, and his eyelids flutter once more, slowly but surely coming out from the realm of sleep. You smile as you let your fingers roam over his muzzle, feeling the ridges of his long cheek and the softer, bushier hair behind his ear. "We have to go, boy."
Billy inhales deeply, and then his eyes snap open. His lazy one stares at a point over your shoulder, but you wait patiently as his good one blinks, looking dazed until it finally focuses on you.
You straighten up, smiling fondly at the sleepy horse. "Good morning, Billy."
Billy stays still, watching you. Your smile slowly falls.
