Nipple injuries…

There are many ways a breast-feeding mommy can get a nipple injury. Most of the time this is from overuse of the nipple area, sensitive skin, using harsh products, babies biting, scratching or twiddling, moist clothing leading to thrush, dryness and cracking and more…

My favorite go to item when I have a nipple injury, such as this is coconut oil. It’s not only moisturizing. It’s also antifungal! Some nipple infections require other treatments that you must speak to your doctor about over the counter nipple cream, and Neosporin or antibiotic ointments can be dangerous to your baby or child so always get the advice of your doctor before using anything on your nipples while breast-feeding.

Coconut oil is safe and effective as long as you are not allergic to it! you should be able to use it as well but again, please talk to your doctor always to make sure that you or your baby do not have an allergy to coconut oil or coconut.

I prefer coconut oil over lanolin, which is actually made from the oils of sheepskin! (Cringe) 😖

Best of luck with any nipple infections mamas. Hopefully you can prevent them in the first place! I wanted to show you a picture of this because this is just irritation sometimes nipple infections can be mistaken for thrush. Thrush appears more as a yellow peeling skin, and a very itchy burning type of sensation in the nipple and areola.

When in doubt, consult your pediatrician, lactation consultant in your area or your primary care physician.
