Can breastfeeding affect my cycle?

Yes. πŸ’― %

I’ve experienced major fluctuations in my cycle throughout my breastfeeding journey. I get excessive bloating around the time of a missed cycle and sometimes go months without a regular menstrual cycle. It is completely normal as the body is making hormones to be able to produce the milk the babies need from the mother. At times a woman can go for months even a year after baby is born without a menstrual cycle if she is exclusively breastfeeding her children. Some women mistake this as a form of birth control but women have been known to get pregnant even while breast-feeding exclusively so always talk to your doctor if you choose to need a form of birth control. It is suggested by health professionals that a woman’s body should be given at least 9-18 months to recover from childbirth before having another child. This is not always the case and women have been known to get pregnant shortly after giving birth which can cause problems for the pregnancy. If you’re planning on having another baby always talk to your doctor about when the right time is for you to start trying to conceive again after childbirth. I noticed that when my two toddlers Tandem nurse more often my monthly cycle stops and I also notice if I go a day without breast-feeding my babies that I will get a monthly cycle shortly after. The fluctuation of hormones definitely plays havoc on the bodies natural menstrual cycles. This can mean unusually heavy or extremely light cycles to happen. A large amount of women don’t experience a regular menstrual cycle until after they’re breast-feeding journey has ended.
