This is one of my favorite episodes. Frankly, I cannot get enough Zoidberg out of this show & anything that expands his backstory works for me. But it was a revelation to learn that Nicole Sullivan of MAD TV was considered for the role of Leela. I know you guys are big fans of Katy Segal but every time Leela spoke all I could hear was Peggy Bundy's voice which was a major distraction. At the time, that character was all Segal was known for & Leela's voice was just a less whiny Peggy. Nicole as a more versatile sketch performer would've been a better choice to go with. On a side note, on the recent WTF interview with Segal, Futurama wasn't even mentioned. It could've been Maron's faux pas but I wonder what her feelings about the show are regarding an overview of her career.

2021-08-14 18:25:30 +0000 UTCBefore listening I watched this episode for the first time in 15+ years. My opinion of it hasn't changed, it's definitely the weakest of the original run. The scene of Harold Zoid directing did nothing for me. At most I got a few chuckles here and there, but I never found the plot very engaging.

2021-08-11 06:38:06 +0000 UTCI remember back on toplessrobot.com when they did a list of the best and worst episodes of per-cancellation Futurama, this episode was number one of the worst. I don't see why since it's a very solid episode with good jokes, but the reasoning they used was Zoidberg "couldn't carry an entire episode."

2021-08-10 16:56:37 +0000 UTCThis is incredibly pedantic, but I always read "Norm and Sam and Sadie's boy" to be a reference to the fact that Zoidberg's species dies after sex. The listing of three parents could indicate the names of Zoidberg's biological parents, and then the name of the person who raised him. If this were the Simpsons I would be convinced that I was just over-reading into a joke that was just meant to be surreal, but the writers of this show turned into continuity dorks for their own show pretty quickly, so who knows?

2021-08-09 13:01:03 +0000 UTCI was not aware that Bill and Josh worked on this episode, but it makes so much sense upon learning that given the plot and the presence of the Moxie joke. Moxie was created by a man from Maine, which is why Maine seeks to claim ownership of it, but it was produced in Lowell, Massachusetts and has been prevalent around me my whole life. Lowell is an old mill and factory town turned small city that's not exactly a destination city. A popular joke, that I've seen turned meme and shared on Facebook, is that Moxie was produced in Lowell and tastes like Lowell. And I think Bill has even professed a fondness for Moxie on Twitter, or it could have been in an interview, but I'm pretty sure I've heard him talk about it. The stuff is vile though, it's like carbonated cough medicine (and I say this as someone who loves the occasional Dr. Pepper), and pretty much only old guys drink it or old souls like Bill.
