What A Cartoon! - The June 2021 Schedule

Summer has arrived once again, and unlike last year, you'll probably be spending a lot more time outside. But thankfully, our reassuring voices will be in your ears for another round of great podcasts during this gradual reopening of society. This month kicks off with a look at one of the most infamous (but historically important) Donald Duck cartoons, followed by a discussion about a truly forgotten prime-time animated series about vermin in the White House. And for the back half of June, we return to Sailor Moon for a podcast about the classic English dub, then wrap things up by kicking off our summer series on the Disney Renaissance with an extra-long take on 1997's Hercules.

And if you're not a subscriber, signing up at the $5 level will get you each episode a week ahead of time and ad-free, along with our collection of exclusive miniseries (like the recent TalKing of the Hill Season 2 Part 1) and over 100 bonus podcasts on top of that!

Here's what's on the schedule for June:

"Der Fuehrer's Face" [Patreon: 6/7/21 - Free Feed: 6/14/21]

You've likely seen VERY out-of-context screenshots of this classic WWII propaganda cartoon, but do you know why Donald Duck is wearing a famous hate symbol, or why he's saluting one of history's greatest monsters? By special patron request, we answer these questions and more with our in-depth discussion of an infamous cartoon that's equal parts naïve and shocking—but still, it's got one hell of a catchy song attached to it.

You can currently watch Der Fuehrer's Face on YouTube.

Capitol Critters - "Hat & Mouse" [Patreon: 6/14/21 - Free Feed: 6/21/21]

Premium Patron Professor Gascan joins us on this episode as we examine a prime-time cartoon that rose in the wake of The Simpsons and quickly crumbled into pieces. The creator of Doogie Howser, M.D. brings us an animated satire that feels more at home on Saturday mornings—or at least it would if not for a few of the shockingly offensive choices on display here. But at least it's not as bad as Fish Police!

You can currently watch this episode of Capitol Critters on YouTube.

Sailor Moon R - "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall" [Patreon: 6/21/21 - Free Feed: 6/28/21]

We're heading back to classic Sailor Moon, but with good reason (other than "it's Sailor Moon"). In our first look at the series a few years back, we focused on the original version and the new, improved localization. This time around, we'll be highlighting the classic DIC dub, which is how most Millennials and older folks first experienced the show. Yes, it might not be completely accurate, but the vocal stylings of those talented Canadians turned a generation on to the world of anime. Join us as we jump back to 1995, when Japanese cartoons on American TV were shockingly rare!

An Extended Free Preview of What A Cartoon Movie for Hercules [Patreon: 6/28/21 - Free Feed: 7/5/21]

For the summer of 2021, we're diving into a series of movies we've mostly managed to avoid in two-and-a-half years of this spinoff podcast: The '90s Disney Renaissance! And we're kicking off this season series with our in-depth exploration of Hercules, Musker and Clements' follow up to 1992's Aladdin. Listen in as we explore Disney's take on the superhero myth, and begrudgingly admit that James Woods is very entertaining in his role as Hades!

And remember: $5 patrons and folks on the free feed will hear an extended preview of the podcast, but if you want the whole thing (and access to all other episodes of What A Cartoon Movie) you'll have to bump your subscription up to the $10 level.

As expected, Disney's Hercules is available to stream on Disney+.

As usual, we've got an extremely varied collection of cartoons this month, and though TalKing of the Hill Season 2 Part 1 is coming to an end, you'll still have monthly Talking Futuramas to tide you over until our next miniseries in the fall of 2021. And who knows—we may have some surprises before then. Hang in there, and look forward to another month of great podcasts!

Comments

As a huge vintage Disney fan, I'm SO happy you guys are both tackling that classic short, and putting to bed those damn "OMG DONALD WAS A NAZI???" clickbait posts. I'm also intrigued by Capitol Critters - I've heard of it for years among the many bad "post-Simpsons" animated shows like Fish Police, but I've never actually bothered to look into them. Really curious to see what it's like.
