What A Cartoon! - Dragon Ball "Monster Beast Giran" With Shivam Bhatt

Chosen by our premium patron L, we're covering the original Dragon Ball anime with our expert friend Shivam Bhatt (co-host of the Commanderin' podcast)! We discuss how Akira Toriyama developed his action-comedy phenom, how Toei Animation adapted it, and how Goku's earlier adventures had a weird localization history in the US. Then we break down one of the first battles in the initial Budokai tournament, as Goku takes on his first round challenger, a kaiju named Giran. So ready up your ki for a kamehameha wave of podcasting action!

The original Dragonball manga was recently translated into Norwegian. I work as a teachers aid for students with varying degrees of difficulties and getting them to read can be difficult. In one such case I introduced a student to Dragonball and he went from not wanting to read anything to devour over 30 volumes of Dragon Ball in a couple of weeks. Luckily the librarian at my school is pretty cool and ordered multiple copies for the school library. They have been so popular that the library now has a decent manga section. If anything I might be responsible for a generation of weebs at the school.

I grew up on the Mexican/Latin American dub of Dragonball & DBZ , and let me tell you DragonBall is as BIG as Soccer and the Simpsons in Mexico that everyone and their Abuela knows who Goku is but I feel like I don’t have to tell you that since the DragonBall Super Final episodes were played in front of various Live Crowds which is Amazing to see. Also Henry Talking about proffering Cha-La over Rock the dragon and I can relate , I grew up listening to the Latin American versions of those songs which are Amazing and when I first heard “Rock the Dragon” I just thought it feel right.
