What A Cartoon! - Goof Troop "Nightmare on Goof Street"

Thanks to the generous support of patron Alex Irish, this week we're exploring some uncharted Disney Afternoon territory via Goofy's very first TV show! Disney had done action and adventure with their afternoon cartoons before 1992, but with Goof Troop, they created their very first animated sitcom. And though this series went through quite a bit of development hell, it ended up redefining Goofy and Pete for a new generation—and let two brilliant actors totally own these roles to this very day. On this week's podcast, join us a we explore an episode that highlights the very entertaining dynamic between Goof Troop's two animated dads: "Nightmare on Goof Street."

Goof Troop is just such a distinctly 1992 show. There's stuff in there that I don't even think would have made television, let alone kids tv even in 1996. One episode ends in Pete getting confronted by the Mafia, with realistic guns and everything. Another has Pete essentially turn his house into a Wacoesque compound complete with a government standoff. But it doesn't matter. Goofy went from clumsy but well meaning suburbanite in the fifties to a savant on par with God in Goof Troop. It borders absurdity and frankly this absurdity makes for outstanding existential comedy in 2020. The next morning after every episode of Goof Troop, Pete wakes up, everything back to normal, but there's a new scheme and a new descent into the madness that is life in the realm of Goof. After hearing the Frank Grimes podcast from you and the Chapo fellows back in 2018, I just can't help but get Grimey vibes from Pete, minus the comedically sympathetic backstory. "Gawrsh. I for one am disappointed that despite this episode's title, it has nothing to do with Nightmare on Elm Street. I guess the show really is like The Simpsons in more ways than one, with a weird title fake out like that. -- Despite not having strong memories of watching this show as a kid, THIS Goofy and THIS Pete are always what I hear in my head and sound the most "right" to me so I must have seen a decent amount of it, at least compared to other stuff starring Goofy & Pete. Though, I definitely had a VHS of A Goofy Movie, so that probably helped cement these voices in my head
