Talking Simpsons - Homer The Great

We hold back the electric car AND make Steve Gutenberg a star in this week's podcast. Homer joins the Stonecutters and then becomes the Chosen One in an all-time great episode full of paddling swollen asses. Attach your Stone of Triumph and listen along with special guest, Kat Bailey!

She kind of left him because he was an awful husband also.

Thank you for mentioning the paint! I think I actually gave myself a false memory by subconsciously inserting a joke/scene into the episode where, right after Homer says "Fellow the yellow dip road" he turns onto a road and sees the regular yellow dotted lines that are always there and says "d'oh." Maybe the writers wanted to do a joke like that, but it got cut for time or cause it wasn't funny enough?

Andrew Bouvier

I think they specifically mention "rat noises" on the commentary so I'm pretty sure that's what they were going for. It's still weird, though.

Bob Mackey

It's nothing major but I noticed 2 little animator joke in this episode. When homer gets the roller skates his license plate says R8DNT which I assume is supposed to be Radiant and the plate on the green car he supports himself on whilst on the skates says ANIM8R like animator. It's not really important but I just thought it was neat.

I think the egg council dude's squeaking is because of the rubber costume, not that he's a rat. I also always thought that the dripping yellow paint was supposed to be a joke because it just looks like the line in the center of the road, but I'm starting to think that was just my child brain seeing things that weren't there.

This episode is the proving one to me: John Swartzwelder is my all time favorite Simpsons writer. Understanding his voice and how his jokes took shape in the show has made my revisiting of the show great. I have to get around to reading his books.

Joel Drayer

I guess I never thought of how much his star had fallen at that point, so in that context its a bit of a gut punch. I know you got the joke though.

Citizen Kane is even more dated than Steve Guttenberg but people get that

I'm sure the Stone Cutter alien is a guy wearing a costume with a flashlight. Steve Guttenberg is a fine "target" for a joke. These recent episodes get into some weird shit. Like Henry talking about raising the dead. And Henry repeating dialogue. Marge's end speech is sad. Homer wanted to matter.

This episode has one of my favorite things ever in it: Homer's mocking voice ("Hello, my name is Number One!"). Always reminds me of one of the funniest scenes from Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood when Homer makes fun of Bart

The two special rings joke is my favorite in the entire series. Unlike most great Simpsons jokes, it's basically impossible to reference in casual conversation, so glad to hear it get some love and finally have my love validated back at me. Also, more Kat please.

Given how rough it sounds, it's clear Dan wasn't singing to a backing track and that was likely him being a good sport during a voice-over recording. In the mid-90s, game developers really didn't have access to that level of assets, especially something a specific as one character's track in a song. I think thinks have changed a whole lot since then, though.

Bob Mackey

I got the joke, I just thought it was kind of a dated low blow in 1995. And speaking of that we still have yet another Gutenberg joke coming up in Talking Critic...

Bob Mackey

Another great episode. When the grand council meets the surprising thing is that Bush disagrees with the others. Considering his season seven episode appearance I think at the next No Homer's meeting he might just agree with them. And I agree We Do is the best song in the Simpsons.

Jack Sharpe

Regarding the Gutt, low blow or not, isn't it true that his stardom was inexplicable? Chris even said it! That's the JOKE! signed lifelong Gutenberg hater.

Ironjoe99

Please you tell us how Hank Azaria recorded that spiel in the middle of every act. I'm curious.

Abe Simpson is a horrible horrible father, that’s not up for debate. If we’re looking at him as a character though, it’s important to remember that part of the reason why he is a horrible father is probably because not only was Homer an unwanted child, but then his wife left him and he was forced to raise that unwanted child as a single parent. That is a rough rough life position to be in

JR Ralls

jeez. I can't believe we're already at this episode.

Hey guys! Awesome episode - as always... Just two small comments: (1) On Dan's a-capella rendition of 'We Do' for the videogame, I'm wondering if it's possible that rather than him re-recording it for that, they just used the track of him singing it for the episode, getting rid of the music and everyone else singing it? (2) It's interesting you say that the show by this episode had grown enough that they could use known side characters instead of anonymous new characters, because I feel that that's what they do in the newest seasons, where for some reason - usually so that they can have a celebrity guest-star - they always have new characters that then disappear...I find that most annoying about the new seasons, where instead of developing or giving new traits to existing characters we know and love, these are made increasingly unidimensional, while we are presented with characters undeserving of our love
